MOTHER, BABY f BURN TO DEATH Explosion Sets Fire to Home in Frankfort—State News. r Special to The Times. FRANKFORT, Ind., April 23. —Mrs. Melvin Kupe and Mary, her 3-months-old daughter, are dead here today, as the result of a fire in their home late yesterday. Everett Rupe, 3, was perhaps fatally burned. The Rnpe home is believed to have been set on fire by the explosion of a can. Neighbors heard an explosion, and on reaching the house it was in flames. Mrs. Rupe was dead when firemen got to her, while the infant baby died at the hospital. Melvin Rupe, the father and husband, is employed by the Cloverleaf railroad. RUSHVILLE—Uoaz Demnree of Greensburg was found guilty of conspiracy to commit burglaries by a jury Ute yesterday. He will oe taken to Michigan City Monday, where he will begin a sentence of two to fourteen years. MX'XCIK—Most of the 1.600 pupils of Mnncie High school today appeared again in denim and gingham. James L. Ward, principal, appeared in overalls. LAPOSTE—ldentification of a body found in a secluded spot near Wanatab Tuesday afternoon with a bullet hole in the neck as that of Albert Loach, wanted in Toledo, 0., in connection with a $35,000 silk robbery and for shooting Sheriff Mathias during a sensational jail delivery, was established Friday morning by Sheriff Mathias. ROCHESTER—Leo Helvy, age 9, of North Manchester, had a narrow escape from death when he became lodged in the ©Ten of a cook stove while attempting to dry his clothing. He was severely burned. TERRE HAUTE —A hundred families Tgt re forced to abandon their homes here today when the Wabash river reached ■lx feet above flood stage. It is expected to go two feet higher, which will equal that of four years ago, when Tailorsvtlle was completely inundated. TERRE HAUTE—Robert "Tougher” Butler, candidate for republican precinct committeeman, was arrested and sent to jail charged with carrying a ccncealed weapon when Judge John Aox of superior court ordered every one in the courtroom searched during the trial of a contempt of court case yesterday. “Tonghey” had no alibi when the court bailiff found a .38 revolver on him. ROCHESTER —An association for ths protection of the fish and natural resources in and about Lake Manitou, was formed in this city last night with more than forty charter members. The association will be known as the Lake Manitou Cottagers* Protective association.

Indiana Starts U. S. Move to Save Gas Oil Resolutions, proposing a nation-wide movement to conserve gas oil, adopted at a conference of the state public service commission with representatives of Indiana gas plants, were mailed today to commissions in other states and utilities companies throughout the country. Gas men at the conference yesterday blamed the Increasing inclination of Americans to move about in automobiles for the present alarming shortage of gas oil, which is being used in gasoline.
