McADOO CHOICE AT SOUTH BEND (Continued From Page One.) which had hoped to keep the prohibition question out of the campaign. Smith is expected to receive a large number of the votes of dry republicans because of the fact that Representative Illckey, the only republican candidate, 1b generally reputed to be wet. Conslderatilo apathy exists concerning tlie race for the democratic nomination for governor. None of the foui candidates has made the vigorous race hoped for and the democrats are somewhat disappointed. It seems to be taken for granted, how ever, that Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch will be the favorite in the primaries. Very few persons seem to have any idea of how the other three candidates are running. SPIEGEL FOR FAIR TAX COLLECTION George M. Spiegel, candidate for the democratic nomination for treasurer of Marion county, today announced the platform on which he is making the race for this office. He said : “In common with a large number of taxpayers and business men of Indianapolis, I have been thoroughly disgusted with tbc manner In which the county treasurer's offlee has been made an adjunct of the political party ill control for the last few years. “I feel that this office is one of the most important of the county government and tiiat It could be conducted or. a plane (hat would be of real benefit to the public which certainly pays enough to have it conducted on a business basis. “I believe that the treasurer of Marion county should endeavor'to collect taxes from the citizens before they become delinquent, and to that end should make it as easy as possible for citizens to ascertain what taxes they owe. “I have no sympathy witfc what appears to be a general indifference toward taxpayers’ efforts to avoid delinquency, and I can not help feeling that a great deal of this Indifference is due to the practice , of collecting large penalties for the treasurer's private purse from those citizens who unfortunately become delinquent, i *'l pledge myself that as treasurer I ! "'HI give my perSlThal attention to the j collection of delinquent taxes and will not ; enter into any contract with individuals ; for the annoyance and humiliation of tax- | payers. i “I pledge myself not to begin my ad--1 ministration l>y collecting fees to which | I nm not entitled. “I pledge myself not to retain a dollar of money that belongs morally or legally to any citizen of the county or to the county as a whole. “I will make no false promises regard Ing the Barrett law fund interest for campaign purposes and I will not. atFINANCIAL. BEST LEGAL TALENT TO BE EMPLOYED. “It is my intention, as treasurer, to employ the best legal talent I can obtain for opinions on the law governing the treasurer atrd to be guided in my conduct of the office by these legal opinions. “I have no interest In the perpetuation of any political organization. “I have no friends or associates whom I wish to succeed me. "As treasurer of Marion county I shall be guided by a desire to see the offlee operated for the benefit of the people of the eoduty and not in such a manner that will amass a small fortune cjmh year to he spent iu the debauching 4s the electorate. “From time to time in my campaign I hope to be able to make other statements relative to my plans for the conduct of the treasurer’s office, but my basis for seeking this nomination and election might be summed up in one statement. “I believe that there Is sufficient pay, legally and morally available for an honest treasurer, to enable him to give the taxpayers better service than they are now and have been receiving from the county treasurer and I want to prove that my belief Is correct.” Senator Hiram \V. Johnson of California, candidate for the republican nomination for the presidency, will open hii campaign in the Calumet district next week. He will speak at Gary, Hammond, East Chicago and Whiting. Senator Johnson will speak at the Columbia club here either April 19 or April ’23. The result of the Illinois primary pleased everybody in “presidential row” in the Claypool. The Lowden people were pleased because their candidate carried the state. The Wood- people were pleased because their candidate carried Chicago. The Johnson people were pleased because their candidate received more than 40.000 votes and one delegate without bis name even appearing ou the ballots. Luke W.
