STATE SENATOR DIES SUDDENLY Body of A. M. Retherford Being Brought Home. ANDERSON, Ind., AprU B.—Tbe body of State Senator Austin M. Retherford of this city Is en route here today from Hot Springs, Ark. Mr. Retherford died unexpectedly there . yesterday of apoplexy. He 'was 64 years old and a leading attorney. Senator Retherford was elected on the democratic ticket four years gao, having served two sessions. He was born in Richland township, north of here, and had spent his entire life in Madison county. The deceased was counsel for the Indiana Silo and Tractor Company for several years. He wai an Elk and Mason. The widow, Mrs. Susanna Retherford, two young children, and four brothers, John R. Retherford and R. M. Retherford of Muncie, Joseph M. Retherford and William A. Retherford of Anderson, survive. Scottish Rite Backs Civic Plaza Plans Scottish Rite bodies will stand behind the movement for a civic plaza, extending University park north to St. Clair park. Refusal to lease a site owned by the Scottish Rite at North Meridian and East North streets was based by Adoniram Grand Lodge of Perfection, the governing body of the rite, on the possibility that the site may be Included in the proposed city plaza. The Bales Manufacturing Company offered to lease the ground for $7,500 a year and erect a substantial automobile service station. The site was purchased by the Scottish Rite for a temple a few years ago for $125,000. Its estimated value now Is $187,500. The Right Thing at the Right Time By MARY MARSHALL S. DUFFEL v J When a Man Calls A reader asks whether it is permissible for a young man to call on a young woman when he Is not expected, or whether he should always, as he puts It, “make a date with her beforehand.” If he has never called upon her before he should at least have received her invitation or permission, but if he has made sure of his welcome he may assuredly call when he wishes without previous arrangement. The fact that he has asked permission to call on a certain evening, however, does not put the young woman under obligations to receive no other caller at that time. Calling on Sunday afternoon usually is perfectly correct and in many neighborhoods It Is more or less of a custom. The young man who calls should remember that in theory at least he is paying his respects to the girl's mother as well as to the daughter and should remember to Include the other members of tbe family in his conversation. When the young woman says on your first move to depart. “Ob. must you go so soon.” or something of that sort, don't delude yourself Into thinking this Is an urgent invitation to remain. It is said simply for courtesy’s sake and if you have remained long enough "Ton should go notwithstanding. Remember that when a young man calls repeatedly a young girl or members of her family have good reasons to' believe he is more than equally interested in her. The mere fact that the young girl always appears glad to see you might lead you to suspect she was somewhat interested in you and yon would be very caddish to encourage that interest when you felt none of your part.—Copyright. 3920.
