- 4WPUTS ? V WS AT WAR KBPRrs today ; JSfy Burden of Responsibly . for Killing Peace Rests on Wilson’s Foes. WASHINGTON. Aprtl 6.—America today completes its third year of war. The United States on the third anniversary of its declaration of war against the Imperial German empire finds itself still technically at war, struggling for freedom from the snarls of Mars despite the fact that hostilities ceased on the western front nearly seventeen months ago The treaty of Versailles, rejected by the senate, after an offensive on the part of President Wilson’s political enemies, is in the hands of the president with slight chance of any further action upon it In the near futnre. A resolution declaring the war at an end Is before the house of representatives, but It faces certain veto by the president. World peace—one of the prime objects of the entrance of the United JiJ#eß In the war—appears to he only idealistic hope for the future. The .military intelligence division of the war department today has Information of more than twenty wars which are raging throughout the world. SOME RESIT.TS OF TBEATI REJECTION. Here are some of the direct results of the rejection of the peace treaty by President Wilson’s political foes In the senate: More than sixty wartime laws are still In force, twenty of which are considered of major itnportance to the everyday life of the American people. There are 17.63S American soldiers in Europe, more than 17,000 of these patroling the conquered Rhine territory. Twenty-two ree sole of the rutted state* navy, with a personnel of more than 8,000 men, are stUl permanently assigned to duty In European waters. The grow national debt today Is §24.686,871,000. and on April , 1817, It Mas ?1,281.966.000. The total cost of the war is estimated by the treasury department as 832,880,000,000. Annual taxes to the extent of approximately 84.000.000,000 are being paid by the American people to wipe out the war debt. There is little hope of a downward revision of taxes during the present year. Secretary of Treasury Houston today expressed the opinion that war taxation must contlnne for nearly twenty years. THIS DOESN’T LOOK EIRE PEACE. The United States is entering upon a military and naval program greater than evpr before in Its history. The army reorganization bill before the senate today Calls for a standing army more than twice as great as that of Aprtl, 1017. Secretary of Navy Daniels has urged congress for a great expansion in the t navy. world war has ended, but war throughout the world. Records of the military intelligence division of the war department show that wars are going on between soviet Russia and Finland, Courland, Poland, antibolsbevlst forces in the Caucasus, the Kuban Cossacks, anti-bolshevist forces in Siberia, Ukrainia, Japan and China: guerrilla warfare is being waged over Greek occnpation of Turkey and over Italian occupation of Albania; Spain is AMUSEMENTS^
