CITY FREIGHT BEING CLEARED OF CONGESTION Embargoes Gradually Lifted and All Expected to Be Removed Soon. BIG FOUR FREES CARS Freight congestion on all railroads Is gradually being relieved, according to Indianapolis railroad men. Many of them predict that practically all embargoes on freight will be lifted within the next two or three weeks, barring adverse weather conditions. At the present time freight shipments are speeding on all lines running out of Indianapolis. There has been an embargo on trap and ferry cars on the Big Four and Pennsylvania lines for several weeks, due to an accumulation of freight in the local freight houses. Tran and ferry cars are used for hauling hlp merits from factory warehouses to railroad freigh thou sea. RELIEF MEASURE TAKEN BY BIG FOUR. The embargo on these cars was lifted yesterday on the Big Pour road, as was the restriction of shipments of less than a oarload Into the city. - The local embargo Is expected to be lifted on the Pennsylvania lines. There la still considerable congestion on eastern lines, according to railroad officials, thees lines not having recovered from the terrific 6tonus which recently struck the east Cleveland and Detroit appear to be latxyrlng under heavy freight congestion and shipments to both points are subject to delay. Officials of the Lake Erie & Western road report heavy embargoes at eastern points, although It Is said there la Uttle delay In shipments going west. Lack of equipment and shortage of labor are the big Items now interfering with railroad shipments, it is said. LOCAL AUTOMOBILE FACTORIES SUFFER. Local automobile factories are greatly handicapped and, according to traffic managers, it Is almost Impossible to get shipments out of the city. This, they say, Is due to a lack of automobile freight cars. The congestion on this class of freight has become so acute that automobile men Ire resorting to the peractieo of driving cars to receiving point*. During the last week the Stutz Motor Company sent cars to Baltimore, Washington, Milwaukee, North Carolina, Chicago and other points by road. Automobile factories also report delays In receiving material shipped from points outside of Indianapolis. A shortage of freight handlers In local railway freight houses Is attributed as one of the major causes of delays In Incoming shipments. EXPRESS SHIPMENTS GREATLY DELAYED. Express service from points oinside of the city Is in a bad way and ah shipments of express are greatly delayed. The congestion of eipyess Is said to be due to the strike In Chicago and accumulation of shipments In St, Louis ond Cincinnati,’ as well as to a short, t>ge of labor. The return of railroads to private ownership has had little effect on the service, according to officials of the virious roads.
