The loyalty test -was urged at a banquet of the Scottish Hite convocation clans attended by nearly 1,000 Masons last night. Capt. E. H. Lougher, formerly with the intelligence branch -of the department of justice, attacked bolshevism In Ms speech and scored those cltisens who were content to sit Idly and harbor the delusion that disloyalty can not gain foothold In America. CoL Edmund D. Clark, formerly commander of base hospital No. S3, spoke on “War Surgery.” Other speakers were George N. Speigel, deputy master Adoniram grand lodge, jB-ho presided as toastmaster in the ab?fence of Thrice Potent Master William H. Bochstahler; William B. Hlce, Terre Haute, president of the state class, and William F. Cleary, president of the city class. The gathering was a part of the program of the fifty-fifth annual reunion of the Scottish Hite of the valley of Indianapolis. 5 Stills Captured a in Kentucky Raid (LEXINGTON, Ky., March 25. Five mhonshlne stills, with a total capacity of| 220 gallons, were destroyed and 1,000 gallons of beer captured by federal prohibition officers in two raids made in the Kentucky mountains this week. Warning shots said to have been fired by moutaineers prevented the capture of three more stills. Job Open in Texas for ‘Boy* of 126 DALLAS, Tex., March 25.—Through a typographical error a printer here advertised for a boy who ‘‘must be more than 126 years old.” Fred G. Tongue wrote that he had a relative 136 years old and could recommend him for the place.

Deschanel, recognised as the leader of French society and arbiter of women’s fashions, Intends to wear golf suits whenever possible. Asquith Hurls Desi at British Premier LONDON, March 25,—Herbert H. Asquith, former premier, In a speech today replied to Premier Lloyd George’s declaration that all the old parties should unite against the labor party to prevent bolshevism! Mr. Asquith said the appeal was for class cleavage and the most mischievous thing that had been done. He branded the Irish bill “a most fantastic and impracticable scheme and the greatest travesty of self-government ever offered a nation.”

MRS. GARDENER ACCEPTS POST New Civil Service Member Aided Next of Kin Society. WASHINGTON, March 25^—Mrs. Helen Hamilton Gardener of this city, author, lecturer and suffragist, who has Just been nominated by President Wilson to succeed Charles M. Galloway of Columbia, 8. C., as a member of the Civil Service Commission, Is the first woman to servo on that body. Mrs. Gardener was associated with W. D. Boyce, owner of The Indiana Dally Times, In the incorporation of the Next of Kin society two years ago. The Next of Kin organization was the predecessor of the American Legion. WIDOW OF COL. DAY. Mrs. Gardener Is the widow of Col. Bel den A. Day, U. 8. A., retired, who died more than a year ago. She was married at the age of 22, and In order to keep her nom de plume of Helen H. Gardener before the public she had the name legalized. Born In Winchester, Va., slxty-two years ago, Mrs. Gardener baß been prominent in suffrage work for a number of years. She also is the author of many short stories and essays. As vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage association ehe was closely associated with Dr. Anna Howard Shaw and Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt In furthering the suffrage cause. Recently there was formed the National League of Woman Voters, with headquarters in the Munsey building. COUNSELOR OF LEAGUE. Mrs. Gardener, from her knowledge of parliamentary law and practice, war made congressional counselor of the league. With the appolutment of Mrs. Gardener the reorganization of the civil service commission Is complete. Mr. Galloway was “ousted” from the commission last year after President Wilson had determined to reorganize It. Other members of the reorganized commission are Martin A.
