LIGHT SAVING UP IN CITY COUNCIL Backers of Extra Hour to Boost Measure Tonight. Supporters of the proposed daylight savings ordinance are expected to fill the city council chamber tonight, when the measure will come up for consideration. Notices of the ordinance’s forthcoming consideration have been sent to all employers who wrote letters favoring moving the clock up an hour In the straw vote of the Associated Employers and other organizations. Os MX) letters received 409 favored the measure. Representative of the Associated Employers, the Chamber of Commerce the Board of Trade, the Merchants’ association, the Scientech club and other organizations will appear In support of the ordinance. Central Labor union leaders are expected to oppose the change. The Merchants Heat and Light Com pany and many wholesale and retail coal dealers have joined In the movement to save an hour of daylight each afternoon, although the change might be calculated to Injure their business In some degree. City and state health authorities have been invited to attend the council meeting and express their views on the health betterment feature of the plan. It Is asserted by supporters of the ordinance that allowing working men and women an extra hour of daylight each day for recreation will prove beneficial In supplanting other forms of recreation which •Involve late hours. From a conference of Yank soldiers, sailors and marines, held March 15, 1919. in Paris, the organization has grown to more than 1.000,000 members. It was an nounced at national headquarters, Meridian Life bnildlng. A previous conference had been held In Paris, but the first formal step toward organizing the legion was taken at the March 15 meeting. This caucus appointed a “committee of seventeen," which called a conference In St. Louis on May 8, 1919. The first formal convention was held In Minneapolis, Nov. 11. On this day the membership was 750,000. There are today* 8,475 American legion posts. New York leading with 891 posts; Illinois second with 553 posts; Pennsylvania third, 511; lowa, 462; Minnesota, 448; Ohio, 382; Missouri, 291; Michigan, 271; Indiana, 270; Massachusetts, 252. Seven Cities Unite to Fight Gas Boosts Benjamin Perk, public utility accountant of the firm of Coffleld & Hedrlch, to day Is engaged In reducing the financial statement of the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric Company to a form that will enable municipal officers of seven cities to oppose the company's petition for rate .increases before the state public service commission. Mayors and city attorneys of Logans port. Wabash. Peru, Frankfort, Lebanon. Plymouth and Crawfordsville have held one conference here to consider plans for opposing the Increased rates and will confer again before the case comes up for hearing. The officials are making a close study of the company’s audit reports and expect to appear before the commission with as complete and clear an analysts of the situation as the company will be able to offer. South Bend Crash Kills One, Hurts Eight gpedal to The Time*. SOUTH BEND, Ind., March 15.—-Mrs. Luella Sucbanek, 32, Is dead and eight others are seriously Injured as the result of a street car crash here late yesterday, when a south-bound Chicago, South Bend & Northern Indiana Inter urban plunged into an open switch near St. Mary's college and academy. The switch near the college had teen left open and the ltval car was backing into the switch. Tbe interurban car crashed into the local car. klllling one passenger and injuring eight others. Some of the passengers attempted to escape by jumping from the car as they saw the approaching interurban. All of the Injured passengers were on the local ear. Terre Haute Utility Seeks Rate Increase Needed improvements at an estimated cost of $400,000 for the Terre Haute. Indianapolis & Eastern Traction company'* light and power plant in Terre Haute are set qut in the company's petition for new hates, on file with the state public service commission today. The petitioner asks for restoration of higher rates in effect prior to April 30, 1919, pending a hearing on the petition. The value of the plant, as, determined by the commission In 1919, was $925,000. The company offers a present valuation of $2,225,000, on which to base new rates. i

DESIGNER DEDICATES NEW CHURCH ORGAN The new qrgau of the First Church of the Evangelical association. New York and East streets, was dedicated Sunday with concerts by Hope Leroy Baumgartner, designer of the organ. Mr. Baumgartner, who Is a son of Rev. and Mrs. S. H. Baumgartner, 418 North Sherman drive, gave selections at morning and evening sendees. Mr. Baumgartner was formerly an organist of the church, but Is now instructor in organ playing and theory of music university. The church organ was Installed at a cost of $9,000. CHURCH FILM TO SHOW ‘ WAYFARER ’ The pageant, ‘‘The Wayfarer,” staged at the, Centenary Missionary exposition of the Methodist church at Columbus, 0., last July, will be shown In motion pictures at the Central Avenue Methodist church, April 18 or 23, according to an announcement by Rev. O. W. Fifer. A later announcement will disclose the exact date. The pageant depicts the progress made by the Methodist missionary movement in all parts of the earth In the last 100 years.
