ASK PUBLIC TO AID ROADS AS RETURN NEARS Utility Owners of Indiana See Co-Operation Need as Private Control Looms. OFFER ‘GOOD WISHES’ The “good wish-e*’’ of the utility owner* of Indiana today were extended to the operators of the railroads, after they i are returned to private control. The Indiana committee on public utility information, in a statement today, declares that the railroad operators face a tremendous task and that co-operation on the pert of the public is necessary. The committee says in part: “Railroad operators are confronted by the problem not merely of resuming normal systems of operation. They are up against the task of applying normal systems to abnormal conditions. No miracles need be expected in the development of new operating method*, for the roads will simply have to do the best they can with the experience and financial equipment they can muster. “They have to contend not merely with higher wages, brought on with the high cost of living, but with increased and increasing costs of operating materials of all kinds. Not only that, they will find their properties are not in the best of condition for efficient operation. 'War economies have Wept down maintenance appropriations, with the result that now, in an era of high prices, the roads must start repair and replacement work that should have been done in the last three or four years. "It i* only the rightful due of the railroad executives that they should have sympathetic co-operation from the pub., lie they serve. The utilities companies -intend to do all that they can to cooperate with the railroads, for they realize that the roads are in much the same condition that governs the utilities Industry. Men at the head of the utilities industry are in a position to appreciate the railroad problem for they ha ,, e also been contending with increasing costs in all branches of the business, while at the same time they have b<"en helpless to increase their revenues. “In short, the problems of the two groups are almost precisely similar. KIN OF HEROES SEND PICTURES f . Photos of Dead SoldierS*to Be Used in War History. Photographs of soldiers, sailors, marines and nurses who lost their lives in the world was are still being received by Ellis Searles, who is- gathering material for the Marion county section of the Official Indiana War History, Mr. Searles said today. „ One hundred and fifty pictures have been collected. In some cases photographs of the dead are not available. The next of kin in such cases are requested to send that information to Mr. Searles to expedite his work. * Charles Sturm, who was listed with the dead, has written Mr. Searles to refute the report. He was missing for some time, Mr. Sturm said, and that caused the error. Names of sixteen additional gold star men have been received by Mr. Searles. The first list contained 400 names. The new names are: , Wilbur F. Headley, Marvin Francis Race. John J. Nolen, Daniel O. Kelley, Leland J. Snowden, Gilbert S. Rosenberger, Philip G. Hague. Ernest H. Lockwood, Ralph D. The Western Union Telegraph Company, not being in any way connected with the operation of establishments mentioned in section 1200 of the child labor law, is not liable to taxation for the employment of boys between 14 and 16 year* of age as office boys or messengers before 6 a. m. or after 7 p. m., according to H. M. Tebay, chief of the Indianapolis division, Internal revenue.
