INDIANA LABOR t . PARTY TO BE FORMED HERE 600 Expected at Session Next Week to Determine Campaign Issues. OPEN TO ALL FAITHS Six hundred representatives of labor and farmer organizations as well as prominent women civic workers are expected to attend the first convention at ■d'hlch the Indiana state labor party will be formed here at Tomlinson hall Feb. 13 and 14. Charles Fox, president of the State Federation of Labor, said today the purpose Is to form a state labor party and outline Its platform. Delegates from this city, Terre Haute. Evansville and Lake county are expected to send the largest delegations to the convention. Mr. Fox said today. The conveution will he opened by Mr. Fox, because the various labor locals voted in favor of calling the convention. Mr. Fox will call for the" presentation of credentials and then a permanent chairman will be ohoseu. 810 VIGO COUNTY DELEGATION EXPECTEP. Mr. Fox said today that he expected from 100 to 150 delegates from Terre Haute and Vigo county and at least 100 from Evansville, as well as a large number from Take county. President Fox bus summoned his entire executive committee, consisting of T. N. Taylor, first vice president of Terre Haute; Joel Messiek, second vice president of Marlon, Ind.; D. ,T. Williams, third vice president of Ft. Wayne; John XVaggoner, fifth vic e president of Hammond, and Adolph .T. Fritz, secretary and treasurer of the State federation, to be present at the opening of the convention. “This convention will determine what part the new party will play in the coming state and national conventions.* said President Fox. “The recent vote of the affiliated locals showed that the big majority favored the calling of a state convention to determine if the machinery should be pul in motion for n state labor party. ARITHMETIC BY ART LATEST IN SCHOOL WORK Children Do Not Know Games They Are Playing Aids in Education. SYSTEM IS PERFECTED Arithmetic*is taught by art in the local public schools. This method of Instruction is carried on through the applied arts course in the elementary schools under the direction of Miss Florence Fitch. Not only arithmetic. but geography; history spelling and practical experience is imbued In the young minds of the city while they pursue a course in color harmony and drawing.. The beauty of the system lies in the fact that the children do not realize that they are being taught, according to Miss Fitch, who also says they are not being taught, but merely being given an opportunity to learn after their own natural inclinations./ STUDY PLACED ON SYSTEM. Under the applied arts course as taught a system of Industry study is placed before the children on which their artist'e efforts are guided. Ta the primary grades food, shelter and clothing, the three primary necessities of life, are made subjects of art study, and thus the students are taken through a simple history of human existence while plying tbelr crayons. ( • Fourth-grade pupils make a study of clay modeling by which they' become familiar with molds, designs and colors. Paper making is taught in the fifth grade and by following the study children learn quite a bit about cutting designs and the history of paper. Studies of cotton, furniture, sewing, concrete making, book making and printing are taken up in the higher grades where the students make rugs, books, clothing, furniture, etc. During this course local industries are visited and the children arc given a glimpse of the practical side of their work. AND THEN THEY’ PLAY GAMES. A game called “Yankee Five Hundred, which provides an excellent method of teaching artihmetie, has been devised by the art department for the younger students.
