WILSON LASHES VISCOUNT GREY FOR PACT NOTE Outside Interference Due to Lodge Friendship, Declares the President. WASHINGTON, Feb. 4.— President Wilson regards Viscount Grey’s letter on the peace treaty as but another step in the campaign to force him to accept strong reservations to the treaty, it was learned at the whitehouse today. The president has read the letter of Viscount Grey, which, declares reservations are agreeable to Great Britain and has informed his intimates that his position will not be sw.;rved by the letter or the report coming from London that the statement had been approved by the cabinet of Great Britain before being made public. , The president takes the view that Viscount Grey has become won over to the viewpoint of Senator Lodge by close personal contact with the republican leader and has reported to his government that endorsement of the treaty with the Lodge reservations is the only possible way to secure ratification of the peace treaty by the United States senate. Secretary Tumulty has steadfastly refused to comment upon the president's attitude toward the letter of Viscount Grey, but it was learned upon the highest authority from one ialconstant communication with the president that the chief executive is highly indignant over* the action taken by Viscount Grey and feels that it is an attempt from an outsider to interfere in a situation which is distinctly between the president of the United States and the Senate. That Senator Lodge and Viscount Grey became fairly well acquainted while the British ambassador was here, is well known in Washington, and it is understood that upon more than one occasion Viscount Grey and Senator Lodge dined together and discussed the treaty situation. These*reports have been transmitted to the president and he interprets them as evidence that Viscount Grey is won over to the campaign to force concessions from the president. Viscount Grey’s special mission to the United States was in connection with tha peace treaty and the league of nations. His mission here was partly blocked by the illness of the president and ’ie did not see the chief executive. ' Because of this fact it is felt by the president and those who are close to him the . viscount was forced to secure the greater part of his information treaty situation from those who are opposed to the president’s course, and foithis reason he has issued his letter in an attempt to strengthen the case of those opposed to the president EASES II COLD WITH ONE DOSE '‘Pape’s Cold Compound” then breaks up a cold in a few hours.
