RETAIL SHOE TRADE SHOWING SMALL PROFIT Probe Shows Average Over Country 7 Per Cent — Profiteers Few. EVERY COST ITEM HIGH Retail shoe dealers throughout the country are lucky if they make an average net profit of 7 per cent and should be absolved from any charges of profiteering. In the opinion of leading shoe retailers of Indianapolis. Shoes that the retailer paid $2.50 per pair for six years ago today cost them $8.50, It was declared. Supporting their assertions, local retailers point to an investigation of 154 stores made by Harvard experts. They found that the average net profit in these stores was only 7 per cent. The Investigation covered every section of the country. The retailers called attention to the fact that many persons fail to distinguish between gross and net profit. Gross profit includes the dealer’s cost of doing business. Net profit is what he has left after all expenses are paid. BUSINESS “SHYSTERS” SMALL PERCENTAGE. There Is a certain class of men in every business who buy up odd lots of goods at low prices and charge all the market will bear. This class of men is oniy about 1 per cent in the shoe business, government investigation shows, it is declared. “The trouble Is,” said a local retail dealer, discussing the situation, “that the average person does not take the trouble to distinguish between gross and net profit. Suppose our charge for a pair of shoes entails an advance over the price we pay the wholesaler of 33 per cent. If the purchaser learns of this, and there is no disposition to conceal it from him. what is the result? His accusation of profiteering on our part Is immediate and energetic. “But let us look at the facts. Every one of our overhead charges, from rents to clerk hire, including light, heat and everything, down to the smallest detail, has advanced very materially. The result

Is that when our gross profit, large on the face of It, Is pared down by overhead expenses, we are lucky to make a net of 7 per cent. HONEST RETAILERS AID GOVERNMENT. “Take it from another angle. Tb<* gov. ernment, after a lengthy Investigation has decided and so announced, that ill) per cent of shoe dealers are ‘honest,’ that is to say. but 1 per cent arc socalled profiteers. Now the national body of retailers, being unable to discern inv possible method of lowering their prices to the consumer under prevailing conditions, has offered to co-operate with the government in every wav in the prosecution of this dishonest faction. In fact, a committee has been appointed to confer with government officials to that end. "Articles have been printed that, by inference. if not by actual assertion, put the retail shoe dealer in the light of a profiteer. We emphatically refute any s""h tnollnetion or te-Oonrv. The CUB tom of a certain sort of traders of going auut the country picking up odds and out-of-style lots of merchandise, then opening a store somewhere and selling it for ‘all the traffic’ will bear has no significance whatever as to the tendencies of the general trade. “Our assertions as to what we pay the wholesalers, what it costs us to exist and continue our business and how much net we have left when all overhead charges are deducted, is not a matter of guesswork, argument or theory, but a matter of easily substantiated fact. the question of high prices, It must be with the producer of every article that goes Into the manufacture of the shoe, not with us. And by that I don’t mean to imply that they are profiteering, for their expenses have increased, too. For example, a cutter, who was working fiftyfour hours a day a few years back for $17.20 a week, now works forty-four hours and gets an average of $45 for a usual five-day week.” Pair Arrested Here Admit Theft of Car Charged with being fugitives from justice and vagrants, two men giving their names as Paul Jones, 18, New Carlisle, Ind., and Raymond Deam, 20, Cresline, 0., were arrested early today by Patrolmen Wenning and Sullivan as they drove past East Washington street and Highland avenue in an automobile. HOW -To DARK E N GRAY HAIR A Cincinnati Barber Tell* How to Make a Remedy for Gray Hair. Mr. Frank Harbaugh of Cincinnati, j Ohio, who has been a barber for more than forty years, recently made the j following statement: “Any one can prepare a simple mix- j ture at home, at very little cost, that will darken gray hair, and make it soft and glossy. To a half-pint of water add 1 ounce bay rum, a small! box of Barbo Compound and % ounce glye irine. These Ingredients can be bought at any drug store at very lit- j tie cost. Apply to the hair twice a week until the desired shade is obtained. This will make a gray-haired person look twenty years younger. It is easy to use, does not color the most delicate scalp. Is not sticky or greasy and does not rub off.” —Advertisement.
