ENGLAND NEEDS HOUSES Indications Are 2,000,000 New Dwellings Are Wanted. LONDON, Jan. 16.—Sir Kingsley Wood, M. P., parliamentary private secretary to the minister of health, speaking on “Housing and TJneettlement” in London recently, said that there were at least 2,000,000 people in the country today who wanted further or better housing accommodations. This serious house shortage was the gravest question before the country, and one of the surest ways to promote bolshevism at home was either to refuse to face the (acts, or, as some were doing, under the guise of a false economy, openly to advocate th& abandonment of the government housing program. Captious criticism and peevish platitudes did not improve the situation. Slums could not be cleared until then, were new houses, and there were 4,000,000 parents, today, living in slum areas. The government scheme, supplemented as it was by its new appeal to private enterprise, was in effect an earnest endeavor to mobilize the wljole of the building resources of the country. It was not only undesirable but impracticable for the state itself to build houses. They had not the machinery or the men, so local authorities and private enterprises were being called in. He urged the housing critics not to produce generalities, but better and more practical proposal^.
