It doesn't make any difference that everybody from the head of the census bureau in Washington down to the last enumerator insist that the information will be kept strictly secret. The maiden of 30 can’t tell who might look over a clerk’s shoulder some time. The newspapers (oh, horrible thought!) might get hold of it and publish it sometimes.; even though the papers are pushed' under a blotter every time a reporter gets near the census office on the fourth floor of the Federal building. AND STILL THEBE ARE MORE TROUBLES. There is the young woman or young mao who is secretly married. The enumerator asks whether the citizen is married or single. Business of furious blushes on the part of the fair citizen. Behind the flushed face the young mind thrashes out the terrible problem. Suppose she doesn t confess? She might be arrested for telling Uncle Sam a lie. Suppose she does confess? That would spoil it all. Why-do-governments want to mix up in folks’ most intimate affairs, anyway? ENUMERATORS-MEET STRANGE EXPERIENCES. The inspectors who wait for calls at | headquarters are kept busy answering j phone calls from enumerators who run j into strange problems. The answer was j affirmative. j Despite-the strict instructions given to I the field workers’ the workers at head--1 quarters have their experiences. The rei sponse to the question as to what is | the native tongue one enumerator wrote ("garlic,” according to the interpretation i given the writing at headquarters. The , word was ifitially translated as "Gaelic.” De-spite amusing setbacks the enumera tors get. Director Spiegel said that the census is proceeding at a very rapid rate. “We’re really having an easier time of it than we expected. Every district ! in the county is covered, and r am sure ! that the city will be finished several j days before the time is up, which, will |be next Friday. Several districts were j completed by the middle of this week (and more are reporting their work done 1 today.” j The census of the farms will not end j until Feb. 1. since thirty days are allot : ted for the rural enumerators. FATHER OF WOOD BOOM GETS OUT __ • l John T. King Resigns and Col. Proctor Takes Job. r 1 ‘ CHICAGO, Jan. 9.—‘John T. King, father of the campaign to make Gen I>eouard Wood president, has left the Wood organization, it was learned today. ! King, who is the national committeeman j from Connecticut, handled nil of the; preliminary details of the campaig-n. No j reason was given for his withdrawal. Col. W. C. Proctor of Cincinnati Is in active charge of the Wood headquarters here. Maj. Gen. Ixionard Wood received the highest number of votes for presidency in a straw ballot taken in Butler college, totaling 107 votes. William J. Bryan received (50; Frank O. Lowden. , 21; Woodrow Wilson, 20; Gen. Pershing, 19; Herbert Hoover. IS-; William G. McAdoo, 11 ; Calvin Coolidge, 10; James P. Goodrich,. 10, and a number of other prominent men received scattering votes. Forty-six students would express no preference. Briton Urges Study of Palms in Schools LONDON. Jan. 9.—The study of palmistry in the public schools is being advo--rated by Miss .Tnlie Critten, who claims to be the leading woman palmist in Great Britain. At an address at Steinway Hall she declared that the palm of every school child should be examined in order to determine his life work. Miss Critten says that one of her chief missions is to detach palmistry from the humbug which has been brought down upon it. -
