MILLION GOAL IN DRIVE FOR CHURCH ROLL Methodists Launch WorldWide Campaign for Converts to Faith. 50,000 ARE LOST IN WAR NEW YORK, Jan. 9.—“ We lost 60.000, We are going to gain a million.'’ That Is the New Year'* resolution of the Methodist Episcopal church, which frankly admits a loss of 60,000 in world membership during the war, but undauntedly embarks with the dawn of a new year upon the greatest evangelistic campaign in the history of Christianity. She campaign for souls will be worldwide and will continue until midnight *f June 20, by which time it is hoped to have- a minimum of at least a million new converts. As church hells added their solemn note the midnight clangor in "every city, town and hamlet in heralding the advent of the New Year, the great drive for men and women—-not money—began. It began at whatever hour was midnight in Esrope and Asia, Africa and South America, and the islands of oeeaniea. Wherever there are Methodist Churches and chapels where white, black, brown and yellow folk gathered for watch night services, the tolling bell was the starter’s gun for the campaign. The Methodists have been busy for weeks and In some cases months, getting all preliminaries out of the way, organizing their campaign machinery down to the smallest part and clearing the track. TWO DIVISIONS TN CAMPAIGN PLANS. Preparations for the campaign fall Into two divisions. There is eke searching of eculs among those who naturally v ill lake the lead. Throughout the country Clergymen and other leaders of -the Methodists have been withdrawing in groups intt> quiet places called “retreats,” where they could prepare themselves spiritually for the crusade. Furthermore, laymen by the thousands have organized to pray for the unconverted. The minnte men, patterned after "the four-minute men made familiar in Liberty loan drives, will be as big a factor in the present campaign as they were in the centenary drive for the $118,000,000 fund raised last year. They number 00.000. They will form “gospel teams’’ and conduct Sunday night - services in churches, schoolhouses, on street Corners, in factories, in fact, any place opportunity affords. Gov. Allen of Kansas heads qne of these “gospel teams,” and the minute men number governors, senators, leading professional and business men in their ranks. The win-one legion Is another group of laymen pledged to train, pray, plan and work to win others to iwmediale membership in some Christian church. It will be promoted by the minute men, and during January a determined efTort will be made to recruit the ranks of the legion to 100,000. Features of the campaign will be a “win-my-chum-week,’’ in which Methodists are pledged to seek the conversion of friends who- are not church members,

None of the young ladles wanted to kill the gobbler. So a bottle of chloform was put to work and Mr. Turk was put tb sleep—killed, thought the girls. Then the bird was plucked and tucked away In a clothes basket. The day of the dinner arrived. When the closet door was opened out walked Mr. Turkey, full of pep but minus feathers, to the accompaniment of screams. The apartment janitor later used the ax.

Os the 1,000.000 conversions set as minimum, 800,000 is the quota for gie United States, the balance to come from the rest of the world. Thus Methodism must gain approximately 20 per oeut In five and one-half months, for its membership in 'the United States, greater than that of any other Protestant dehomination, is 4,200,000. While -many American churches “beat the flag” and already are sending into headquarters of the centenary conservation committee, 111 Fifth avenue, New York, stirring stories of. conversions, foreign missions, too, in some cases failed to wait for the scheduled openingot the drive today. In the heart of the Belgian Congo T. B. Brinton, a Methodist missionary, has inaugurated a revival which has won the-prime minister of Mwata Yamvo, paramount chief of the Luundra tribes, as well as many followers. And in places in India whol* villages, headed by their mayors, are abandoning Hinduism and asking Chris

tian baptism as a result.of the Methodist evangelistic servtces. I This campaign, greater than anything ever dreamed 'of by Finney, Dwight Moody, Giftpy Smith or Billy Sunday, conceived'and carried out, moreover, by a whole great denomination and not by onvman, is a vital part of the centenary program. Celebrating last year the him dredth anniversary of Methodism in America, the Methodists raised their sll £.000.000 for warx reconstruction and I world regeneration. More than 200,000 tithed themselves one-tenth’of their income for the five-year period- Now rhe mouey givers demand that the church renew itself spiritually so as to apply its l\uge fund in the best possible way.
