Plutocratic Hoosier Showers Want Class; Price no Matter Indianapoli6 people are spending more money for luxuries than ever before and the people who are spending the money are those who have spent little for such things heretofore. While many are talking about the high cost of living, others are literally complaining because prices are not high enough, according to J. C. Sipe, diamond merchant.
“The other day,” Mr. Sipe. said, ,“* iunn from a small Indiana city came to me to buy a diamond. I showed him a perfect blue stone and quoted him a price which I thought would knock him off his chair. Instead -of objecting to toe pvice he asked if I couldn't give hini something better. I told him that 1 could give him a bigger stohe. He replied that he did rf6t "desire a bigger stone but a more expensive one. Then I almost fell from my chair.” PEOPLE HAVE QUIT ASKING CHEAP GOODS. Mr. Sipe said this is merely an example of the way sales are being made, without any regard to price, although diamonds are higher than ever before. He sain he did twice as much busltiess during December as he had ever done before. “Sales of single diamods for $2,000 and $3,000 are not at all uncommon,” he said. “During the Christmas season we had a line of women’s watches** at $675 apiece. We sold every one of them.” As an illustration of what is being done in other lines Mr. Sipe said a woman made a purchase of jewelry a few

dnys ago and asked about the war tax. She was told that the war tax was counted in the purchase price. Then she explained that another store bad added the tax to the $69 she had just paid for three men's shirts. DIFFERENT SHOPPERS FROM OLD TIMES. The people who are buying diamonds are not those who usually buy them, according to Mr. Sipe. He explained that persons wbo previously bave bought diamonds are not buying them now because they know the price has gone up tremendously, while persons who have never bought diamonds do not know anything about prices and do not care particularly. , Many persons are converting rheir war savings into luxuries. Mr. Sipe explained. He said that thousands of dollars worth of liberty bonds had been brought to his store and exchanged at their market values for jewelry. Mr. Sipe’s experience is similar to that reported by numerous other merchants

ip various lines. More furs and more gpenslve furs are being bought than ever, and by persons whose positions a few years ago would be considered barely remunerative enough to afford them a living. The rush for luxuries is explained by some as an attempt to satisfy a craving which the persons purchasing luxuries have never before had the means to satisfy.
