IRISH QUESTION TO BE DEBATED Protestants Will Take Up Issue at Meeting Here. Ireland’s claim to self-government will be dlseussed next Tuesday night at a mass meeting in the Odd Fellow auditorium, Washington and Pennsylvania streets. The meeting will be held under the auspices of the Protestant Friends of Ireland and will be open to the general public. Prof. Arthur TTpham Pope of Amherst college will be the principal speaker. He is an officer of the Protestant Friends of Ireland. Rev. James Gratton Mythem. D. D., of the Episcopalian church of Norfolk, Va., one of the protestant leaders in the fight for the Irish claims and Dr. Patrick H. McCartan will also speak. Local leaders in the movement plan elaborate entertainment for the visitors, who are touring the United States. A luncheon will be given at the Chamber Os Commerce Tuesday noon, and the visitors will be entertained in the afternoon and at dinner. Members of the local committee on entertainment are John C. Humes, William Allen Wood. Capt. W. E. English. Frank P. Lltschert. Horaeo W. Carey, Mahlon Unger, Miss Georgia Alexandttfr, Miss Pauline Robs, Miss Caroline Hendricks, Miss Anna Torrance, Miss Fay Banta and Miss Anna Todd. Miss Florence Beckett will sing at the evening meeting. The Protestant Friends of Ireland has established offices in New York. B.—That the mid-morning lunch given to the pupils of the grade schools in Logansport is of benefit to them from a health standpoint is clearly shown in the report made public of a six weeks’ test made In the Tipton school this year. There are 2C4 pupils In the school. Os these 179 were given the mid-morning lunch, consisting of a half pint of milk and a few graham wafers, while the remaining sixty-five were not given the lunch. One hundred and thirty-five, ot 75 per cent, of the pupils given the milk and wafers gained in weight. D. E. MURPHY DIES SUDDENLY. KOKOMO, Ind., Jan. B.—D. E. Murphy, 74, well known in democratic politics, and former district oil inspector, died suddenly on the fourth floor of the Citizens Bank building, where he had offices. Wealthy Draft Evaded to Be Court-martialed NEW YORK, Jan. B.—Grover Cloveland Bergfloll, son of a Philadelphia brewer charged with evading the draft, is in solitary confinement today at the Ft. Jay disciplinary barracks, Governor’s island. Bergdoll will be court-martialed at an early date. TAX ARGUMENT UP TOMORROW Fight Against Horizontal Increases to Be Heard. Both divisions of the appellate court will hear oral arguments tomorrow In the case In which Marion county taxpayers are opposing horlaontal Increases made effective by the state board of tax commissioners. The Marion county superior court enjoined county officials from certifying the increases and thestate appealed to the appellate court. - The case will decide the right of the tax board to make hdrizontal increases, and will determine whether taxing units will lose millions In revenues through the failure of the tax board to fix sufficiently high rates. The horizontal Increases total $770,000,000. Each side will be given two hours for argument. U. S. Lesh, deputy attorney general, probably will open for the state, and be followed by Emsley W.
