Giisat A'stRbxoMiCAL Discoveries. By the politeness of a. friend in this place, who furnished us with an early crpy of the Cincinnati tri-weekly Republican, we are enabled to commence the publication in the Palladium this week of a series of extracts from the Edinburgh Journal of Science which relate to one of the most important celestial discoveries that science or the ingenuity of man can boast of. The Editor of the Republican in introducing these discoveries to his columns, remarks : "The
facts which are there for the first time made known to the world, fill the mind with astonishment and pride. Astonishment at the wonders of nature which they reveal, and pride at the sublime expansion of human knowledge which has been achieved by the science ami ingenuity of man. These discoveries were made by Sir John Ilershel, at the Cape of Good Hope, under the patronage of the British Government, by means of a telescope of his
own invention, which, says the Edinburgh Journal, is the most magnificent specimen of philosophical mcchanis n of the present or previous age." The utmost secrecy was main
tained during its construction, and rigidly preserved until the results of the experiment were ascertained. By means of this extraordinary invention, it is "demonstrated that the moon has an atmosphere constituted, similar to our own and capable of sustaining organized, and thorefore, most probably, human life." It will be perceived that trees, mountains, 'branching rivers, abounding with lovely islands and water birds 6f numerous kinds ; lakes, sea?, cascades, quadrupeds, some of w hich of a species resembling our bison, others which dift .. .. .
irom an' at is known to inhabit our globe, successively met the delighted vision of Dr. Herschel and his companion as they progressed in their enchanting discoveries.

The election which took place in Rhode Island on the 25th ult. fur members of Congress resulted in a most glorious democratic triumph. The Van Buren -candidates, Messrs. Pcarce and Sprague have been elected by majorities of nearly 200 over Burges and Cranston.
We have returns from all the Congressional Districts in North Carolina sufficient to determine the results. The following gentlemen it is believed are elected to the next Congress : Wm. B. We apprehend he is "available."
Lawrexceburoh Rail-Road. It is with the liveliest feelings of pleasure, that we witness the spirit and enterprise manifested by our fellow-citizens at Lawrenceburgh. They certainly deserve the highest encomiums we are able to give them, for the
energy with which they have commenced the railroad tothis place. We like the plan of a company of individuals joining together and determining to completed miles of the road immediately. We believe they will never regret it, if they go on their determination. We say to them, complete 30 miles from Lawrenceburgh, and Decatur, Shelby and Marion will do their duty. Nothing but a continu
ance of the spirit now manifested by the citizens of Lawrenceburgh is wanting, to ensure the completion of the r6ad to this place. The editors of the Palladium, we are glad to perceive, are alive to the inter
ests of the work. They are co-workers with us, in another great couse, and we trust they will ever be found rallying, as they now are, under the standard of internal improvement. Indianajiolis Democrat.

The expense of Parliament Committees for 1S33 and 1834, amounting to 75 in number, was 35,-
590. As an instance of the unequal pressure of old laws in England, we may give the county of Lancashire,
which pays, in conformity to the ancient assessment, only 21,000 taxation, while Westminster alone pays 03,000. The Reform must extend here also. The whole number of brewers In England, is 1007; publicans, 53,297; persons licensed to sell beer, 33,354, 6cc. In Scotland and Ireland each about 200 to 2G0 brewers. The wheat, oats and hay harvest, in Scotland, are good, but 2 or 3 weeks later than usual, from the coolness of the season. The Pope refuses the prayer of Louis Philippe to recognise Donna Maria of Portugal, unless she
restores the bishops whom she has "unfrocked." The little Queen interests the French King at this moment particularly, as it is said she has a penchant fo his son, tho Duke da Nemours.
Capt. Jas. (i. Burns, son of the poet, is promoted to the rank of Majorin tha E. India service. Mid. Ruiz, a young sister of Mad. Malibran, has made quite a sensation at Leghorn, in the part of the Somnabula. She was a little girl when in this country. There are now 154 Savings Bunks in France, with a capital stock of 50 millions of francs. The number of members of Temperance societies,
in England and Wales, amounts to 117,803 persons. Among the comissioners appointed by tho King to decide upon the best plan of building for the two
houses of parliament, we observe Samuel uogers, Esq., the poet we presume, who is so celebrated for his fine taste, as well as for his matchless verses. The Duke of Willington looks in fine health and spirits, and is now quite a favorite, being cheered by the populace as he passes through the streets, instead of being pelted as formerly with brick bats. Chantrey, the sculptor, has been knighted. Elizabeth Roberts, a poor woman servant, aged

SENATORS TIPTON AND HENDRICKS,
The New York American, since the people of Indiana have returned its whole Delegation expressly pledged to support the Administration, has made reprisal upon the State, and carried off both Senators. It says: The Indiana Senators, both of whom usually, and
one always, we believe, supported the measures of Gen. Jackson, have now pronounced against Martin Van. Buren for tho succession, and in favor of Gtwi. Harrison. This must have the effect of throwing
them in the oppositon on all questions and they will
not be few bavins: on the Presidential election.
In reply to this we have only to
saj that in conversation with one of "the members of the Indiana delagction, who
visited this city a few-days since, wc
were informed by him, that the tergiversation of the Indiana Senators, reported by the opposition, is utterly untrue that they are openly and decidedly the friends of the nomination of Pre
