Saturday ITIorning, June 27. 0"We are requested to announce hon. Jesse L. Hoiman as a candidate for School Commissioner, at the ensuing election.

fJyThe meeting appointed to devise ways and means for improving the river hilU in the direction to Manches

ter, it should be recollected, will be held to-day, at four o'clock. . Those disposed to aid in the work named, should be punctual in their attendance at the hour of meeting. We learn from the Rising Sun Times, that the removal of the seat of justice from Lawrenceburgh, is about .to be made a matter of celebration at that place on the 4th July next. Wonder if it would not be advisable to postpone the jollity until after dog days say 2d Monday in August? We merely make the suggestion.

We understand (not having seen the proceedings) that the meeting held at Wilmington, on Saturday last, nominated Tiomas Howard, William Conaicay, and Henry IValker as candidates for representatives.

The Cholera. The report of the existence of the cholera in Madison, (noticed last week,) is confirmed by the Banner of.that place. From the 10th to the 18th instant, Thursday 19 deaths had taken place. Since that time we have had no certain information: but nr inrbippd tn

believe that the disease is subsiding. Among the deceased (a list of which we give) we find the name of James H. Wallace, Esq. one of the Editors of the Banner, a highly useful and respectable citizen. For several years he served the people of Jefferson county in the legislature of this State, discharging the duties of the station with zeal, abilit-, and entirely to the satisfaction of his constituents. In his death the citizens of Jefferson, in particular, and community in general, have sustained an irreparable lors. TheMaysville Monitor, of the 11th inst. notices one or two cases of the cholera in that city; and some few cases are said to have occurred in Cincinnati lately. We think, however, there is no reason to apprehend a general prevalence of the disease over the country. Let people li ve as theought avoiding imprudent use of green, unwholsome fruits or vegetables and there is little danger not more than in ordinary seasons. Some, if not the principal, cases of disease, resembling cholera, now occurring, may be traced to some improper use of fruits. Cherries and mulberries, particularly the latter, it would be prudent to use sparingly, if at all. We have heard of many cases lately of the common cholera morbus, arising from eating mulberries too freely.

The legislature of Ohio adjourned on Saturday last, after resolving upon a speedy survey of the line between that State and Michigan; and authorizing the governor, o 1 the refusal of the United States to co-operate, to proceed with the survey, placing $300,000 at his disposal to carry the object into effect. On the leth instant the governor made a special comm 1nication to the legislature, accompanied by a letter from the Secretary of State, at Washington. The governor regards the letter as rather equivocal in its character, bette) caloulated to defeat, than bring about an amicable adjustment of the difficulty with Michigan. The letter and message will be given in our next.

The editor pf the Times is desirous to know the views of Messrs. Gregg, Milliken and Tebbs, in reference to the mammoth bill, Lawrencceburgh rail read, and AVhite Water canal. Suppose, Mr. Glenn, that you ascertain where the centre of the. county is, and after fixing the county scat there, call a meeting of the candidates upon the spot to give their views on the subject named. We dislike to see so much wavering from the point in dispute. Let the county

seat be nally fixed, and then the roads and canals will be '

auenucu to next.

Phenomenon. By a centlcmnn recently ' fiom Prince William county, Virginia, we have ht?cn informed of a remarkable occurrence which look

! place on the Neabsco, tract, about four miles from

Dumines, of Monday se'night, during that heavy thunder storm, which, it will he recollected, overFpread the whole henvens, and apparently visited every quarter of our country. The earth for se

veral acres, which was previously firm and good, suddenly (from its present appearance) sunk to the depth of about 4 feef, and cracked open in innumerable places throughout the whole mass, as if it had been blown away by gunpowder. The thunder and lightning there was awfully heavy and severe, accompanied by an abundant shower of hail, which, however, was not so injurious to the grain as to the window glass. Numerous persons have visited the spot, but are totally unable to account for the remarkable phenomenon. Some suppose it to have been produced by the shock of an earthquake, although the people residing in the neighborhood experienced, or rather observed no sensation during the storm to justify such a conclusion; yet it is possible such might have been the fact, as from the continual glare of lightning and the heavy peals of thunder, with a combination of appre-

lier.sion tor their personal safety, they might have had a shock of an earthquake which they attributed to tho effects of the raging storm. Georgetown Metropolitan. The British cruisers, off Sierra Leone, have csd-

The editor of the Times is monstrous severe upon the Manchester resolufcjous. They are, in his view, "slanderous and contemptible,77 and altogether too '"insidious and presumptions." Wonder if the citizens of Manchester, after hearing this opinion of the proceedings, would not do well to call a meeting and reconsider the resolutions objected to by the editor of the Times. They, certainly, must have been very hasty in their deliberations, to have overlooked so many improprieties as are pointed out by the said editor. But what is still worse, the whole proceedings, says the editor, were got up and concocted by the Lavrencebure;hers ; which shows some thing like premeditation maliee aforethought highly censurable indeed. If the editor of the Times will hav e the goodness to come up to the old county seat, we promise to call a meeting of the Lawrenceburghers ; have them all sworn as to the par they have taken in framing the "slanderous" resolutions; and if any shall be found guilty of aiding or abetting, sentenced to work one month at making bricks for tho new court house.
