However willin; we might be, upon ordinary occasions,
that the voters of this county should selectmen to serve them in the various situations and duties prescribed by our laws, with their minds free and unbiased by any other objects, save the public good ; still a state of things some times happens, when we must lay aside our prefcrances for men; yea, when we must burst asunder the mostf sacred ties of friendship and fix our eyes directly and steadily upon things as they really are upon measures upon principles upon the public interest. And in times like these,
'too, our citizens might still be left to vote their own choice, . without any effort being mad? to induce them to support particular men, were they left alone by all parties : for ice Jinnlif believe in the doctrine, that ''let the people alone and they trill do right.'" But w henever in any county, state, or country, a few designing men league together for Ihe purpose of effecting some particular object, which may advance their own interest, (in opposition to the public good,) by increasing their wealth, and who resort t3 every kind oi inlrigvc, stratagem and misrcpreseT.ta.iicn, '.o deceive and g'dl the unsuspecting public, it is not only the duty of every man to vote for men who will defeat the object of those men, but it is an obligation he owes to himself ; to the public and to his children, who are hereafter to be aiTected by these things, to use every effort to secure the election of men who will serve all fathfully, impartially, nnd rescue the control of public affairs from the hands of the designing and intriguing few. Such a crsis, we believe, we have now reached in the local politics of our county. A time which loudly calls upon eaeh man to seize every opportunity make-use of every exertion w hich ordinary affairs would not require, to elect men to the next legislature who will legislate for the people for the public good ; and not for the aggrandizement of any one particular spot, nor for any particular set of men. A time which calls upon every man to lay aside partiality for friends, neighbors, and political partizans, and cast his vote for him who will go for the people, and for
the whole county. A time which calls upon the people to rise in the greatness of their strength, to let their voice be heard, in one loud, long deafening pea!, beneath which the hopes of the petty intriguers must quail. A time to assert their rights and demand that their interest generally shall be attended , regardless of any particular tiff let theivi be whom they may that the scheme for locating the seat of justice at the town of Wilmington, was gotten up, carried forward, and accomplished by the management, intrigue and misrepresentations of a few men, for selfish, interested motives, we think, cannot for a moment be doubted ; and that the people were most grossly and outrageously deceived in voting, at the late election, when they supposed a fair expression of the will of the people would be taken ; and that in voting for a removal, the claims of all points would be listened to. That they were not voting directly for locating the county seat at Wilmington, is also very evident. That there w as not general satisfaction withtha count)' seat at Lawrenceburgh we admit; but that there is now a general dissatisfaction with the location at Wilmington, must also be readily admitted, since that place possesses fewer advantages suitable for a county seat, than any other of the points w hich have presented their claims for consideration. With the?e view s we shall feel bound to vote for men, at the coming election, in whom we can confide ; who will exert themselves in the legislature to have a relocation of our seat of justice, that the question may be fairly, impartially and finally settled. That a majority of the free and inde
pendent voters of Uiis county maybe heard and regarded
and that the rights ot the

We should do injustice to o jr own'. feelings and the interests of our thriving town, were we to omit to notice, in the most complimentary manner, the spirited exertions made by our late fellow citizen, (Capt. The want of such means of conveyance across the Ohio at this point, has been seriously felt by the travelling public, as well as by our own citizens; aid now that it has been put in operation, in good style,

Slorr.i. This place and vicinity were visited on Thursday night last, by a violent rain storm, which continued, with slight abatement, until about 7 o'clock yesterday morning, accompanied by vivid, sharp lightning cr.d a constant roar of thunder. Directl y after day light, a tremendous concussion took place. x. heavy charge of electric fluid descended upon the cupoln of Mr. Hunt's tavern house, in this place, which it demolished, throwing the timbers about the streets to a great distance. After tearing away the cupalo (L or 20 feet high) even to the roof, the fluid diverged at the comb a portion taking down the rafters on either side of the roof to the eves, w hence it seemed to pass laterally along the gutters some GO or 70 feet until it reached the tin conductors, and thence to the ground. The di vision that took the south-west side of the roof, was by far the heaviest, as it tore the rafters, sheeting, shingles and cornice very much, while on the other side the j
damage was not so great. The conductors on both sides j of the house were burst in holes, and a portion of th? one I
