. BRIDAL SONG. t Translated from the German, by James JVack. " With the hood of thy mother Bedeck thee, fair maiden, And put on her ribands; Thy tresses to braiden ; With the '"fillet of care, And thei bandage of duty, Encircle, fir maiden, The brovof thy beauty ! And weep nfoh weep not, In the bri&vt $rray Thou wilt xvl thy life, If thou weel est to-day. In the seat of ry mother, Be seated, f4r fjaaiden, And walk in her footsteps, With blessingsbeaden, Nay, why should&t thou weep, In the moment of gladness I Cook up to they lover, And banish thy sadness ! Oh chase from thy beauty The shadows away, And smile all thy life As thou smilest to-day !
From "The Cruise of the Midge," in Brackwood for Feb. THE LOST SADDLE. s A SCENE IN THE WEST INDIES. "Saunders," quoth the oldest .man from the sanctum, "hae ye counted the saydelsl" "Yes uncle, twice over, and there is still one missing." "Vara extraordinar," rejoined the small husky voice from the dark corner "Vara extraordinar:" Then after a pause "Hae ye closed aw the accounts, Saunders!" "No, sir." - "Whilk of them are open yetl" "Mr. Wanderson's." "Yin," said the voice. "Joliffe and Blackhouse." "Twa?" "Skinflint and Peacemeal." "Three!" "His honor the Custos." "Four." "And GabrilJuniper." "Ay, there's five o'them. Well-a-well, Sa'.mders, we maunna lose the value of the say del at no rate -see just clap in 'item one saydeP to ilk anc o'the five ye hae read afFthe new seriawtim they'll no aw objack ane we will surely stick masbe mair." I was a good deal amused with this, and while the others were inspecting some setts of harness and the quality of several boxes of soap, I could not resist drawing nearer, under the lee of the partition, to enjoy the fun of the thing. Presently Twigg joined me. The conscience of the younger of the two in lividuals, seemed to rebel somewhat at this national and characteristic method of balancing an account, and making gain of the loss of a saddle. "Really, uncle, none of these parties got the saddle, I am positively certain of that. "It's no my fawt if they didna we canna lose the saydel, Saunders, by na manner of means." "O, but, sir," persisted the other, "Mr. Wanderson, for instance, a person you always speak so highly of." "Haud your tongue, sir, and do as bid ye it'll no be charged agin yere conscience, and ye're no the keeper o' mine." I was amazingly tickled at this. After a pause, "Ilea ye charged the saydels yet, Saunders!" "Yes, sir," said the clerk, doggerly; "yes, all charged, and I'm just closing the accounts." "Close nane o'the accounts devil's in the lad wi' his hurry close nane o'the accounts, sir so noo charge twa or three odd things till each o' the five just to smoor the saydel, ye ken what arc ye glowering at do ye no understaun yere mither tongue to mak the charge less noticeable, ye gawmarel." "Really, sir," said the younger cf the two, "I have not courage to do so unjust an action of myself." "Haud yere tongue, and write what I dictate, then, sir wha's first! Ay, Mr. Wanderson. Let me sec an I L hinge, and a negro lock, a bottle o' blister flies, to Mr. Wanderson. He's always giving poor people help and medicine, and he'll no'er notice them. Wha's neist!" "The Custos, sir." "Ay, the Custos," said the voice: "a jovial chield is his honor so, so just clap doon, item, twa corkscrews. He's no muckle gein to payin', but ne'er mind I'll screw it out o' him in rum and plaintains.' And here the creature laughed an "cldrich laugh," sounding more like keck, keck, keck, than any com mon cachmnation. "Wha s neist! ' "Jolliffe and Blackhouse. "Ay, braw English lads are they baith, leeberal shields and fond o' guid eating: clap a round o' Jew beef on the tap o' their saydel." Keck, keck, keck. "Wha's neist!" "Skinflint and Peacemeal, sir." "Bah! nasty Scotch bodies," (and what may you be, thought I;) "and well I wot I would be glad to saydel them" keck, keck "but they'll no be fisted that gate, I trow they are evvre gleg; sell them a loose, and if he wanted a deg of the fud my certie, letabee findin' it out, they wad plea it afore they payed it sae pass them ower. But wait awee I am loath to let Skinflint escape, after aw. How many graunstanes did their cart ca' for the other day!" "Two dozen, sir." "Twa dizzen graunstanes, did ye say! herd ony mortal the like o' that four-and-twenty graunstanes! What can they do wi' sae money? They maun surely mack soup o' them, or feed their nigers wi' them or may be they grind their noses on them" keck, keck "Did you send an invoice wi' the cart, Saunders!" . "No sir, the man went away without it." "Vari weel." "The cart upset on the way home, and broke several of the stones, I hear." "Better and better mak the hca dizzen three, Saunders; surely the'll na piece the broken ancs the gither to check the tally the extra dizzin will aboot balance a saydel, Saunders. So, if we canna fit them wi' a saydel, we'll tak a ride aff them, bare-backed." Keck, keck, keck. "Wha's neist!" "Gabriel Juniper, sir." "Fashious drunken, ncerdowell wash his saydel dawn wi a gallon o' gin and twa o' brandy. He'll no be able tothieep wi me, for he's amastaye drunk noo; ayne he could'na keep ain saydel the last time I saw him on horse back, it's but richt he sould pay for the lost ane." Keck, keck, keck. "Noo, Saunders, ye're a decent lad, sae satisfy yere conscience, and mind ye gie up in shape o' discount at the settlement, the amount o' aw the fictitious items, barring the saydels and graunstanes, though mind that .barring the saydel and the graunstanes. Noo, soom hip and close, ye deevil soom up and close." A SmallJIIistake. In the town of Ethere fotmerlv lived an old miller, who was remarkably forgetful, usually taking one toll out of the hopper, and another from the trough, after it had come through the mill. He argued that it was better to be "twice right than once wrong." If, according to his doctrine, it was'right to take toll, bo it was wrong for him to grind without that perquisite, and it was right to take toll once, bo it was perfectly right thatThe should take it twice. This did not satisfy the old man, however, and he increased his demands to such an extent, that peopie began to complain, but as there was no other mill in the neighborhood, they had to grin and bear it.' One day a dry old fellow sent a bag of wheat to be ground which was of so excellent a quality, that the miller thought be must increase his toll. This
he did so conscientiously, that the bag went home
minus one half the grist. INcxt morning tne owner met him, and accosting him with a lengthened pm, said, "Do you know what a plaguy mystak you made with my wheat yesterday.'" ' "No I don't," said he "what was it!" - - "5 "Why, nothing of any consequence," replied the other, "only you happened to send home the toll instead of the" grist."
