We understand that even at this time the propriety of holding a meeting at Harrison, to express the feelings of the citzeo4n that portion of Ohio and Indiana, in reference to the proposed Whitewater canal, is seriously talked of, and will probably be held sometime in May. But whether it be held then or at a later period, we are satisfied it will be one of the largest meetings ever held in the Whitewater valley ; and the expression of its opinion will be such as to do honor Xo heads and hearts of the intelligent citizens of that fair portion of the country.

Business. It does ones feelings good to look back and take a view of things some 12 or 18 months ago, just about the time the panic, in money matters, was at its height, and then look at things as they are now. The wonderful evils that were to follow the withdrawal ofthe United States' bank paper, have either passed by unobserved, or they are yet to come. Produce has steadily kept at fair prices, and laterly has advanced considerably on old rates. Money is as plenty now as usual; and if every fanner, mechanic, or

of all descriptions seems to be on the increase. Two or three substantial buildings were formerly the extent of the improvement of a season, in this place ; now preparations

augur wen ior a large increase on this number. In addition to these favorable- symptoms of business, it is worthy cf remark that at no former period has our town been so well stocked with merchandise. Almost all the traders in the place have lately received large and complete assortments, which they are offering on very reasonable terms ; at lest we w ill 'take the responsibility' so to state in behalf of our advertising friends we can't vouch for any others. Dealers from the country should always inspect the newspaper, to find where good bargains are to be had. No trader with an old, damaged stock of goods, will ever put them in the paper, for fear of exposure. We won't say that such is the case with any of our merchants, but just drop the hint for consideration.

Another British Outrage on American Property. The Brig Enterprize, Captain Smith, which left Alexandria, D. C. for Charleston, sometime since, and, not being heard of, was supposed lost arrived yesterday in 14 days from Bermuda, into the vicinity of which Island she was forced by stress of weather; and, being short of provisionsput in there for supplies. Capt. Smith has politely furnished us with two Bermuda papers, from which, we collect the following account of the proceedings which caused his detention. Capt. S. will probably furnish further particulars for to-morrow's paper. This is the second outrage of the kind. The firs, in which citizens of North Carolina were the injured parties, having been brought to the notice of the Legislature of that State, and made the subject of legislative action. It seems to us that these high handed proceedings of the British authorities are much more legitimate grounds of war, than the five millions claimed against France. It appears that, the day after his arrival in the port of Hamilton, Capt. Smith reported himself ready for sea, and requested the Custom House Officers to report the Enterprize outwards; this, however, was declined until the pleasure of the' (Governor could be ascertained, with regard to the 78 slaves whom he had on board. In the mean time a Friendly Society of colored persons got out a writ of Habeas Corpus, that it might be known whether

said slaves were willing to proceed or to remain and

marsnaiiea into Uourt, and informed by the the Chief Justice that thev were frpp nnd

protected if desirous of remaining where they were. The whole of the slaves except a woman and five children, who preferred proceeding in the vessel decided in favor of this kind of British Emancipation. The slaves thus liberated were afterwards provided for, as domestic servants, or taken under

the protection of the aforesaid Friendly Society. The Bermuda paper blames Capt. Smith much for I

tue just, muignution which he manifested at this violation of his rights, and gross outrage of the American flag. The Enterprize had been regularly cleared from Alexandria, and no informalitv or omission was pretended to have been in her papers.
