The constitution, it is said, permits no sucli adjournment, and the members of the Senate are . stoutly berated for thus taking themselves oft", contrary to law. In which waysoever the constitution runs, it was, in our opinion, cowardly for the senate thus to retreat, to defeat the majority. It would have looked much better to have met the matter and settled it, as we apprehend nothing will be effected by delay to defeat the election of a Senator friendly to the administration. In the language of Davy Crockett, they should have "etood up to the rack, fodder or no fodder."

We occupy a great portion of to-day's paper with Foreign News, connected with the difficulty between this government and France. The importance ofthis matter, and the general interest felt by all, in reference to it, render it unnecessary to apologize for excluding other news to make room for it. The extracts given will, we think, enable the reader to form a pretty correct opinion in what way the matter is likely to terminate.

The legislature of Kentucky adjourned on Saturday last. We learn from the Frankfort Argus of the 2i3th ult. that the bill from the House, to establish the "Northern Bank of Kentucky," passed the Senate, by a vote of 20 to 18. The bill fixes the capital of the bank at three millions mother bank at Lexington and allows four branches. We learn from the same paper that the house of representatives has passed a bill to borrow, on the faith of the State, one million of dollars, to be expended in constructing turnpike roads, and improving the navigation of streams within the State. We are unable to say whether the bill has been acted upon by the Senate.

, Cincinnati, February 13, 1835. Cold. We have just gone through the coldest spell of weather that has been experienced since this country has been civilized. On Friday night ihe mercury fell to 14 below Zero; through Saturday it rose in the warmest situations to only 3 or 4 above Zero; the Sun wa3 clouded for a great part
of the time, and the air was filled with small crystals of snow; a frozen fog: largo masses of ice reaching from shore to shore came down the river, one of which carried away with it a little Steamer which had not obtained a secure berth. On Saturday night the mercury was as low as 17 or 18 below; and at half past nine Sunday morning was 12 below Zero. Sunday evening and Monday morning it was only 4 or 5 below. The sky clouded over on Monday, and the wind came to the South Fast. The river is full of ice, and were it not so high would have closed some time since, in all probability. On Saturday night wo understand 3

January 1797 Governor Sargent saw the thermometer 18 below Zero, but at no other period Ins our late cold been equalled. Cincinnati Intelligencer.

We should all the time feel there was a crisis of the most momentous character hanging over us, and that is to guard against the least encroachment upon our rights and upon our liberties; to hold on to the government of our own affairs, which has wisely been committed to our own bands; and to take special care that we do not in the least mar the beauties of our Republic. To preserve these things then, unsullied, it behooves us in the selection of a man for the Presidency of the United States, to select him of tried virtues and tried patriotism. As we look upon that as the great approachable avenue to the postration of our government. The names of several eminent individuals of the United States have already been put in nomination for the Presidency in eighteen hundred and thirtysix. And it gives us pleasure to witness tho names of so many into whose hands the people arc willing commit this high and responsible duty. Our bosoms heave with national pride, and we exult in the fact that our country affords so many of her sons, who are thought worthy of what must, at this day, in tiie political world, be acknowledged the greatest earthly honor and without intimating any thing in derogation of the high character of the others of our pre
eminent citizens put in nomination.it is with no ordinary feelings of gratification we have witnessed among them the name of our old friend and co-ope-ratr, W;a; IIr.:.av Haruison. He who defended us in days when we were unable to defend
ourselves; who presided over our infancy; who led us on to a national character; and aided in putting in operation nur machine of State, which has already carried us to greatness. Though we do not favor his claims to the Presidency, particularly on account of his services, though many, great, and perilous ones ho has rendered to his country, both civil and military; for we believe every man owes to his country his whole energy and his whole talent, when emergencies require their assistance. Yet his tried patriotism, his stern integrity, and his democratic principles, against which the first whisper has not been heard to
breathe, together with the well known powers of
: his mind, which have been called into action by his
country in various situations and on various occasions, warrant us in choosing him as a man amply qualified to discharge the many, great, and onerous
duties ot a president of the United States; and who, should he ever be honored with that station, will

examining court by warrant charging him with the killing of Samuel Q. Richardson, Esq. Air. Waring admitted the kdling and waived all examination of witnesses on the part of the Commonwealih. He addressed the court at some length, giving them a" general outline of what would be his defence, before the jury in the circuit court, justifying his conduct on the ground of previous threats made by. the deceased. He was regularly committed lor further trial. An application for a change i of venue in this case, from tho county of Franklin to the county of Woodford is now pending before tho Legislature .
