Rather hasty. It is related, as a joke ujm the New York Whiffs, that they fired a grand saluted

some hundred guns in anticipation of their victory in i

that city. The election took place, and tne victory was found tobe,on 'lother side. Here wasa dilemma "great noise and no wool." Fruitful in expedients, and ever ready for an emergency, the matter was soon turned to suit the new posture of affairs, and the whole smoke and racket declared to have been made in honor of the Whig victories in Delaware, Ohio, and Connecticut. We and our friends (political we mean) had scarce got fairly under headway rejoicing at our brilliant successes in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, when here we are put all aback and dumfounded by the news from another quarter.

Delaware! the large, populous, powerful State of

.Delaware, has just cast her vote for the opposition ticket. Congress, legislature and all are elected; and Mr. Clayton, of course, as good as re-chosen to the United State Senate. But this is not all Massachusetts has followed suit, and gone the whole figure against us. A friend at our elbow, however, says we ought not to be frightened at these results, but rather encouraged by the fact that, in as much as we had nothing in either State before, we have lost nothing but our labor in the contest. This consoles us, and now we can say with a pretty good countenance, we are beaten again in Delaware and Massachusetts, but, (and we say this with some warmth,) we held them a 'terrible hard tussle for it.' Slate Bank. It will ba seen by notices published to-day, in connexion with others previously given, that all the branches (ten) authorized at present by our bank charter, have organized, and are, or will be in a few days, issuing paper. The officers of the branch here are busily engaged signing the notes, vttd will most likely get through, so as to commence business, on Monday ror Tuesday next. By some miscalculation, or neglect somewhere, but a small portion of the paper alloted to each branch has been received about $32,000, when each is entitled to $160,000. Should the balance not come to hand in 2 or 3 days, we shall have the novel spectacle presented of a bank issuing one dollar in paper, for every two and a half possessed by her in specie. Truly, Indiana, under such circumstances, is in a fair way to contribute her portion towards establishing a sound circulating medium. No pet bank or safety fund either, can come up to her.

Now that the elections are all over for this year, and the result pretty well ascertained, it may not be amiss to figure up a little, to let our readers understand how politics run, or rather how parties will stand in the next Congress. In Georgia the administration has gained 6 members; in Pennsylvania 6; in South Carolina 2; in Louisiana 1 in all 15. In Ohio it has lost 2 members; and in Maine 1- leaving a gain in its favor of 12. In the Senate, it will certainly gain 1 member from Maine; one from New Jersey; one from New Hampshire; one from Mississippi; and probably one from Rhode Island, and another from Virginia 6. Making a difference in favor of the administration in the next Congross, compared with the present, of 24 in the house, and 8 in the senate. This is getting along tolerably well, and indicates any thing but a falling off from the democratic cause. Indeed, so far as we are able to understand the signs of the times, they indicate a great preponderance in favor of the powers that be. So apparent is this fact, that even the Whig Editors are constrained to own it; and in the bitterness of disappointed feeling, point to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, &c. and exclaim, 'Jacksonism is a thing that can neither be killed nor cured." Having at last made this discovery, it is to be hoped they will permit it to live out its time in peace.

The weather having been tolerably favorable during the past week, the pork packing business has progressed with considerable activity for some days. We understand that about 2000 head of hogs have already been put up by our dealers, and a still larger number, it is expected, will be packed in the coming week. We observe, however, a greater backwardness to engage in the business this fall than usualowing probably to the abundance of the article, and the uncertainty as to the price it will sustain through the season. Several gentlemen who have heretofore done a large business, are either altogether inactive, or merely packing for the country dealers. Extensive preparations have been made for this kind of business. The prices offering for pork here are some thing like those quoted in our last.

The river has fallen, in 3 or 4 days past, about 3 feet, and is still on the decline; though the appearances of the weather (rainy) indicate a change in a short time.
