Gatarday Rlorning, JVor 15. (r Three days' meeting of the Presbyterian society of Christians, will be held at the new church ia this place, commencing on Friday next. On the sabbath following the sacramental ordinance will be performed.

The legislature of Maryland, atita next meeting, will be composed of 62 opposition, and 18 administration membe rs, in the house of representatives. The senate, 15 in number, are all opposition making, on joint ballot, an opposition majority of 59.

- --i-" viunuu in iuc im.mni.uii couiuy, district, for a member of congress to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of R. T. Ly tie, has, we learn, resulted in the re-election of 31r. L. by a majority of 48 votes, over J.W.Mason. MrM. professed to belong to no party, and most likely received votes from both, but principally from the bankites.

Correction. In the list, published in our last, of

tne members of congress elect in Ohio, the name of W. L. Helfinstein is substituted for that of Joseph II. Crane, as the member chosen in the 3d district. Making this correction, the delegation from Ohio will stand, in the next congress, 9 administration; 10 opposition. We were led into the error, by copying the list from another paper.

A dreadful hurricane has been felt at Dominico. It is said that two-thirda of the sugar estates are levelled to the ground, and several vessels lying in the roads were lost. The barracks, governor's house and all the public buildings were much injured, if not prostrated. The damages are of a great amount. The northern part of Martinico had, in like manner, suffered. So far as the gale extended it seems to have been as severe as any one ever felt in the West Indies. The black "apprentices" in the British Islands

are generally quiet, but will not work when it is

Horrid Affray. At the late races at Hardinsburgh, Breckenridge county, there'arose an affray which cost the life of a Mr. Thomas Alexander, and a severe wound in the abdomen of S. Singleton Esq., two respectable citizens of that vicinity. Lucien Peyton, the principal offender, whose thrusts were fatal to the unfortunate Alexander, has been arrested, we understand, and lodged in tho jail at Rome, Indiana. Louisville Transcript.

the day fixed upon for the payment of the first in

6talmcnt (on the part of individuals) of the capital stock of the branch bank of the State at this place, we are pleased to be able to say that every cent subeciibed was punctually paid up in gold and silver, and that not a single delinquency occurred. On Tuesday an election was held for directors on the part of the individual stockholders, which resulted in the choice of the following named gentlemen, viz: Omer Tousey, John P. Dunn, Williom Tate, Daniel S. Major, George Tousey, Richard Tyner, Norval Sparks, and Walter Hays 8. These gentlemen, with the three directors appointed on the part of the State Bank, to wit: Jesse Hunt and Pinckney James (there being a vacancy Mr O. Tousey having resigned his appointment, on election as a director by the stockholders,) composing the directory, met on Wednesday and organized, by the election of Mr. Omer Tousey, as president; Enoch D.John, Esq. cashier; and David Guard, Esq. director of the State Bank, on the part of this branch. The appointment of clerks was deferred to the next meeting of the board, which will take place next week. The cashier (Mr. John) left here yesterday, on his way to Indianapolis, with the view to procure the necessary books, papers, kc. at the mother bank, to commence operations. The supposition is that all will be arranged and in readiness for business, by tho 25th instant. Thus far the business has proceeded smoothly, and in a spirit that forebodes the best results. The gentlemen chosen directors and officers in this branch, are, no doubt, as well qualified to discharge

the duties devolving upon them, as any that could have been selected. They are men of business, industry, respectability, integrity, and, we think, disposed to do right. Of some of them we can in all eincerity declare (without intending to allude to the reverse as to any one) we believe them strictly honest. With such men at tho head of the institution, the public may reasonably expect its affairs will be

conducted with caution, propriety and liberality. !

j. ne capital at present invested (60,000 in specie) will not, it is presumed, at all times, be sufficient to meet the wants of community; but so far as the means will go, we feel persuaded they will be delt out in just proportions to all. The idle predictions of the suspicious and distrustful, that txfeto a favored few will receive all the accommodations, to the exclusion of the many, equally able, and possessing equal claims, we cannot believe will be realized. As faithful sentinels on the watch-tower, we shall consider it our duty to have an eye to its administration, and if need be, to speak of it as becometh the friends of the people.

Wc are informed that our remarks last week, relative to the misunderstanding between the friends of Messrs. Plumer and Tibbets, were misconstrued by some; particularly the last sentence, where we said, that the communication then inserted, "placed them on an equal footing." It appears to us almost impossible to give our language, taking the whole sentence together, any other meaning- than the one we

wished to convey; but to obviate all difficulty on this point, and do justice to those who have considered

themselves injured, we will state, that what we would be understood by equality, is nothing more or less, than that we had published as many communications for the one side as for the other; and, consequently, so far as we were concerned, they were 'on an equal footing." - What we have said on this subject, was not dictated by any ill feelings towards either of the gentlemen, nor a disposition to take part in the controversy; but with a view of putting an end to a dispute which has long been continued, and from which, it appears to us, no possible good could erainate. We trust that this explanation will be perfectly satisfactory, and that we will have no occasion to refer to this subject again. v. m. c.

From B. Lcvys N. O. Prices Current of Oct. 25. Remarks. The weather since our last report lias been dry and pleasant, affording every facility to transactions out door, where every thing wears the most favorable appearance; indeed, the change that a single week has brought about is so great, that we cannot refrain from noticing it: and it may now be said that the commercial campaign has fairly opened. Tho city is healthy, and Mississippi, as last noticed, 13i ft below high water mark. Sugar. Wc find it rather difficult at this mo

The good cause goes on swimmingly. The Democrats, or Tories, (as the Whigs will have it,) have, it is reported, carried the ir ticket at the late election in the city of New York, by a majority of over 2000 votes. In our next we shall be able to give particulars.

The Ohio river has been falling slowly for some days back, and is, for the season, at rather low staore.

The rain that has fallen within the last 24 hours, if general and as heavy cs it has been here, must put the water up to a good boating stage in a few days. By the following article, which we copy from the Westmoreland, Pa. Republican, it will be seen that Mr. Frelinghuysen will have leave of absence from the U. S. Senate from and after the present session yf congress: 'The Legislature of New Jersey convened on the 28th ult. at Trenton. Vroom has been re-elected governor of that state, and Garret D. Wall, chosen United States Senator. Tim

Wall 37, and Frelinghuysen 2S. Mr. Frelinghuysen has now been made to feel tint the People are sovereign and not the Bank? There are in the United States nearly seven hundred local Banks, besides the United States Bank and its twenty-four Branches. The capital stock of these Banks amounts to upwards of tico hundred millions of dollars, upon which they are authorised to issue four hundred millions of paper! ' The whole amount of Gold and Silver in the United States ia estimated to be about fifty millions of dollars.

A regular North Carolinian, on Monday, made his appearance in the office of the U. S. Gazette, measuring six feet eight inches in height, and as straight as a pine tree. His whole family belong to

the breed of "Long uns." The united measure of himself and four brothers amounts to 32 feet and 3 inches, and they are not the highest that can be produced by "a great smell; for a neighbor of his, measures over seven feet parpandicular." Monstrous. A report came to tho city a few days ago, of a murder committed at a log4iouse raising in the back woods of Indiana. Wo transcribe the circumstances, literally, as wc understood them. While the work was going on, a man, with an axe, clove the brain of another with whom he had some altercation. This so unnerved the strained arms that supported a heavy log uear to the top of .the wall, that it fell upon them killing

inm with the bloody axe and two otheis. Another man, on the corner of the wall, fainted, or was so much affected by what he saw, that he fell and

broke his neck. All occasioned by the wicl

rashness of one man, Louisville vancr.

Cholera in Sweden. Letters from Gottenburg by the last Liverpool packet bring information that the cholera was rapidly decreasing there at the close of August. The number of deaths by it during its prevalence was rather more than 2,500.

At Stockholm the number of deaths by cholera up to the 28lh August, was 105. JY. Y. Enq. Anti-Duelling Society in New Orleans. A most

respectable company of gentlemen in New Orleans, have formed themselves into an Anti-Duelling Society, and appointed a numerous committee to draw up resolutions suited to the objects of the society. Duelling has prevailed to a frightful, and it is not too much to add, to a ridiculous extent, for a long time past at New Orleans, and we do not wonder at the declaration of the preamble read to the meeting called for the purpose of organizing the society "that it is an evil which threatens the verv existence of social intercourse." lb.
