. The Cincinnati papers report 41 deaths in that city, for the week ending on the 15th inst. We are unable to-day to speak with any certainty, in reference to the Ohio elections. The papers from that State, received yesterday, contain nothing determinate as to governor. Roth sides appear to anticipate success. The congressional elections, it is eaid, have resulted in favor of the administration or anti-bank party. We have nothing from the Pennsylvania elections worth noticing. Another week will bring the news in Boine detail, from that quarter. The residence of president Jackson, near Nashville, Tennessee, Hermitage,) we learn by a Cincinnati paper, was destroyed by fire on the 11th inst. The principal part of the furniture and papers saved fire accidental.
v The Ohio river, after having attained a height in the early part of the week, sufheient to give a little briskness to steam boat business, is again on the fall; and will in a few days more, it is apprehended, be down too low to admit the further progress (for the present) of a number of boats lately seen passing up and down.
The steam boat Friend, (says the Louisville Advertiser,) was run into and sunk by another boat near New Orleans, on the 25th ult. Cargo partly saved. No lives lost.
.. :,.7; . Manchester, October .lotli, 1 S3 L To the Editors of the Palladium : Gentlemen Having" noticed a communication m your paper of the 4th instant, directed to the Editors of the Times, signed Henry Hopkins, John 13. Clark, and Jesse Pardun, in which these gentlemen, I regret to say, make statements devoid of all truth, and give a coloring to others well calculated to deceive. The facts are these: on the evening alluded to in their communication, Mr. Plumer came to mv house and presented me with a certificate to sign, contradicting, in part, my statements in a certificate published in your paper of the 13th of September last, particularly as to the word false, which I refused to do, and stating my conviction of the truth of what I had then said; admitting the possibility of doing wrong to bo qualified to that or any other word he sppke on the day of the election, but said if I were on oath, I would as soon sav tW hp mndo
use of that word as the other, unauthorized, which he admits. He then rennest.ir1 mo tn with I.;.

so, and found no person
there. Mr. Plumer then left me in the road and shortly returned with Mr. Hopkins, (Esquire Clark beng called to the office,) and shortly after some others came in. I was then presented 'with sundry other certificates to sign, which were drawn up at that time, all of which I refused to do. A request was then made for me to suffer them to make out a statement on my authority; which I, in the strongest language, refused to do declaring my conviction of what I had certified to. . There was much conversation, in which I admitted all that I had before said to Mr. Plumer, and this much for his satisfaction I would say at any time. ,..- ABXER TIBUETS. The Editors of the Rising Sun Times are respectfully requested to give the above an insertion.
It i3 said that hogs thrive best when there are but three or four in the same apartment of a pen". They are fond of society, though no.better than a "swinish multitude;" when congregated in large assemblies, as they know no law but their own wills, and acknowledge no right but the right of the strongest, they sometimes condemn a weaker brother without judge or jury, and proceed to execute him without mercy. When, therefore, it is wished to fatten a
considerable number, they should have several apartments separated by partitions, and there may be a general feeding trough, to which each division of animals may have separate access. "There is no greater mistake than that of gorging swine when first penned for fattening. They should on the contrary, be moderately and frequently fed, so that they be kept full, but do not loathe or reject their food; and in the end contract fevers and dan
gerous maladies, originating in a hot and corrupted !
mass or blood, in airy and roomy, yet moderately warm pens, well paved and boarded, they are healthy and thriving. They show a disposition to be cleanly however otherwise is supposed, and always leave their excrementitious matter in a part of the pen distinct from that in which they lie down. No animal will thrive unless it be kept clean. Clerk of the Common Pleas. On Monday afternoon, tiie Court of Common Pleas appointed a clerk: which has terminated a Ion?? disnuled inat-

epidemic prevaling in the city, and for the season, it is unusually healthy. Molasses. Of this article wo hear nothing new, or, at least, worthy of particular remark ; at this season there is but little arriving, and consequently not much doing; it continues to be worth, when good, 20 a 22 cts. per gallon on the Levee. Cleared since the 1st instant for Philadelphia, 89 hhds. STGbbls. Flour. The stock continues small and the demand very fair at $5 GO a $5 75 per bbl. Arrived since the 1st inst. 1G3 bbls. Pork. For Mess there is a fair demand at 14 per bbl; Prime is chiefly wanted for planter's use, and is worth $14; Cargo, $8 50 per bbl. No arrival. Beef. There is no Western Beef in market. Bacon continues very scarce; and the demand, particularly for Sides, is very good at Sh cents; Shoulders, 6 a Ci ; Hams are more plenty, and are selling at 9 cents. Arrived, 11 hhds hams. Lard. The demand for this article depends greatly on the orders from the Havana and the
ports of Mexico, and' consequently, liable to frequent changes; at present, it is tolerably fair Li 8 cts-. per lb. Butter. Western continues plenty and dull at 10a 12 cts; Goshen, though not brisk, is in better demand at 20 a 23 cts per lb. Arrived since. 1st inst 65 kegs. Basin: and Bale Rope. We are not informed
of any change in the price of either of these articles, and the demand continues about as last noticed, for baggmg extremely good, rope rather dull. Lead. There is none remaining in first hands; the last lot thatcame in was taken at 4 124 per 100 lbs and the demand is fair at that price. Arrived since the 1st inst. G20 pigs. Salt. The business doing in this article contin
ues to be extremely limited at former prices; blown $1 75 ground, 1 37 per sack. Whiskey is growing more scarce, and the demand is pretty good at 28 cts. per gal. Coffee. There is some demand for fino Havana Green, but very little for the other descriptions in the market. We quote Havana Green at 12 a 131. . A great discovery in Chemkstry has lately been ,1. ... Ti- r:i,i f i
J succeeded in extracting from tar and smoke a hither
to unknown substance which he calls Kieosot, (flesh preserver.) This substance possesses the property of resisting putrefaction, in a most eminent degree, and when diluted with water, fresh slaughtered meat, after having been immersed in it for a . few minutes, may be kept in the open air and in the hottest weather, for any length of time without becoming in the least affected. The fact led several eminent physicians to experiment with it, in the treatment of human diseases, applying it both internally and externally, in which they have been crowned with the most striking success. People afilicted with the .horrible disease of Can
cerafter having been despaired of by the most skilful physicians, have been completely cured by Kieosot. For wounds and sores in general, it has been
found the best remedy known; and it is particularly recommended in surgical operations as it prevents inflammation, and stops the most excessive bleeding almost instantly. In histerical desease, it is likewise said to be of ger.t service: We are glad to hear that Messrs K. Klctt clc Co of this city, have received a supply of this valuable medicine, and hope that we shall soon hear of its good effects. Phila C'az. DIED At her residence in this countv, on tlie
