The death of the Hon. William II. Crawford is noticed in the Georgia papers. . He died on the 15th ult. near Elberton, Georgia.
, . It may be -well enough to inform our country friends, who may still entertain fears of the preva
lence of the cholera here, that no case of death or
sickness from that disease, has occurred since our last publication. The health of the town has much improved in the last 10 or 12 days, and may now be pronounced good. The last death or case of cholera occurred on the 30th ult 12 days since. Roblery. The Cincinnati Republican of the 2d inst. says: "the boot of the mail stage, running between this place and Hamilton, was cut open, on yesterday morning, while proceeding to the latter place, and several trunks taken from it. One of the trunks contained $303 in the new gold currency, besides other valuable articles."
The Comely for whose appearance we were on the Jook-out, and who was to have shown himself about these days, is not to be seen. And we are now told that his visit has been postponed until the next year, when he .will certainly show himself; after which he will be off on a peregrination of about 75 years, and invisible to this portion of the earth. The yearly elections in Ohio and Pennsylvania take place cn Tuesday next. The elections of members of congress, occurring at that time, give to them an interest over the country, rarely felt in a political calm. The result is looked to ns determining the course those ttates will most likely purBue in the next presidential election.
The Ohio river has been rising slowly for a few days past, and is now 18 inches or 2 feet above low water mark. The swell, though of considerable benefit to the small craft, is not sufficient, however, to give any thing like activity to steam boat business: as none of them, excepting the smallest, are yet enabled to pass the bars and shoal between Louisville and Maysville; and above the latter place, it is, or was a few days ago, even difficult to get along with a keel boat. One of our mercantile houses, shipping goods from Pittsburgh, had a portion of them twice eunk and wet on the way down, owing to the lowness of the water. Hirer List. The following shipments by flat boats have been made from this place, since our last publication: No 1G & 17. West & Nowlin, owners: departed 5th Oct. Cargo 100 tons hay; 400 bushels oats. No IS &c 19. George Cheek, owner: departed came day. Cargo 100 tons hay.
Our attention having been occupied with other matters, we have, (rather uncivally, we admit,) neglected to return our thanks to the Editor of the New Yorker, for his kind allenlion and aid to us previous to the late election. Rut while we acknowledge with grateful feelings, the "generous puff" of the Editor aforesaid., we hope it will give him no uneasiness to be informed, that ho went to work the wrong way to give us a boost. This thing of calling a candidate clever, gentlemanly , deserving, and the like, will never do it is too common place, to take the attention. Retter call him a rogue, a liar, unprincipled; and some insist that it is of some advantage to add thief to the catalogue: for this will set the people to inquiring, and cive the candidate a chance
to cry presecution; all of which helps to extend his acquaintance and chances to beget friends. The Editor of the New Yorker said some "clever" things of us, to which our friends, (as a matter of course,) replied in approval; &nd no argument aris
ing there being no contradiction the election was Buffered to come on without scarce a show of excitement. The result was, as might have been expected, a defeat; while we, secure in the belief that the electioneering tact of our New Yorker friend and Editor, was sufficient to carry us through, paid little
ourself, as we were wont, in type setting, scribbling, gardening, feeding the pigs, watching the bees, and taking care of the children, until awakened by the appalling fact, that our Tammany friend had
from all sin in the matter, however, on the score of the lack of intention. Ry the way we arc corry our friend of the New Yorker, (the unconscious cause of our defeat,) has taken the alarm at the ill-success, (politically,) of the editorial corps in North Carolina and Indiana, and foresworn a residence in either State. We say we are sorry for this, for we incline to the opinion that the said Editor is a clever, jovial, hearty, goodhumored fellow, and would add not a little to the interest of the social circle, were he to settle hereabouts; and besides, we believe he has been too hasty in his determination. North Carolina may use the profession a little scurvily, but it is not the case here, as we can very well attest having ourt elf in the run of 8 years held the posts of corporal, ensign, town clerk, recorder, president of the town, representative two years, senator, &c. 6cc. &c. Now, if this looks like slighting the editorial fraternity, we don't understand the terra that's all. D. V. C.
soman, and place him upon the track, almost against his consent and frequently without it, and by their united force and a portion of the other party, he is easily elected; and this is circulated abroad as the success of the Whig candidate; bclievinsrithata feint
oi gain is ueuer man an acknowledged loss. At other times, when it is considered politic, they use the candidate thus nominated as a "stool-pigeon," to divide or lure the Jackson party from their true purpose, and by secret management and concert of action, elect some one of their own party. Such is the game that is now being played by the opposition in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and in fact has been in this State, or others not the less dishonorable. We trust our democratic friends will be on their guard where elections are now pending, and not suffer themselves to be beguiled by the artifices of the opposition, but stand firm in support of the men of their choice. The elections which are to take place this fall, are to fix the political character of the next Senate of the United States, and are, therefore, of more than ordinary interest. From recent movements, we expect to hear a'good account from the anti-Rank party in Pennsylvania. A lump of sugar was obtained in the silver mines
of Konigsburgh, Georgia, which is perhaps the lar
gest ever seen, it weighed li cwt. and is estimated at the value of 13,000 in specie. What do you think of it, Mr. reader? "A lump

In a late No. of the Cleveland Herald, we meet with the following report of a slump-speech, delivered or read to a meeting of Buckeyes, in one of the northern counties cf Ohio. The orator rather outslumps the u Salt-River Roarer," of West Tennessee, pretty considerably: Slump Claim for the Office of Sheriff of the county of Guyahoga, subject to the regular Whig nomination, at the next Election. I hereby certify that I was born in Vermont state; and removed from thence into the state of Ohio, and now township of Royal ton inJISlG; was elected lieutenant and afterwards promoted to a captain, and in commission nine years; during which time I held the first civil office as constable; cut out roads in various directions; planted the first field of corn in Royalton; hired my board at $2 50 per week, and hunted my own racoons: all of which I was well satisfied with. In my military career, used a sword taken from a British cfiicer at the celebrated battle of New Orleans. Removed into the township of Brooklyn as a chinking in 1823, and was promoted to many civil offices in Brooklyn; supported the standing Methodist Episcopal church in that place, until excommunicated, vi ct armis. Against my own will, and all decency, had a legal investigation in the court of justice; squared the yard and costs at 49 cents; and then at the right about face, and helped in seizing 4 pretended ministers of the gospel, one of peace, and two lay members as disturbers of the Peace, riotous, dating, antidating, adding, and interlining, according to their own poor will and pleasure, claiming the right of the church, that of committing pious frauds, with the utmost impunity; all of which cleared the coop on investigation, except the minister of justice, who was bound to answer to the court of common pleas in Cuyahoga county; and further more I do hereby give the electors a free and full investigation into my reputation. And I ask of you, Mr. Printer, to insert my claims in your columns for the above ofiice, as 1 can get six townships that will go for me to the amount of two votes each. I am now corporal in Brooklyn militia under Capt. Ross. ABIAL CUSHMAN, Brooklyn, 26th Sept. 1834. Corporal,

. Whig Duplicity. At. a Whig convention, re
cently held in Bradford county, (Pa.) for the purpose -of. nominating candidates to be supported at the approaching election, wc discover the name of Reuben Wilder, Esq. placed upon their ticket as a candidate lor the assembly. Mr. W. is universally known as a Jackson man, and as such has Berved for several years in the senate of that State was elevated to that station by the Jackson party, and has publicly and privately sustained the general policy of the State and that of the General Government." He is still claimed by the administration
party, notwithstanding the seeming determination of their political opponents to wrest him from them. The same convention also nominated Jeke Adams, Esq. for a county officer, who is a Jackson man, and who, but a few weeks 6ince, attended as a delegate, a Democratic convention, assembled for the 6ame purpose. Now wc notice these things, not for their magnitudc, or the great benefit the opposition can derive therefrom, when their object is properly understood .by the people, but to show the duplicity the low
and (wc like to have said) contemptible means reported to by these self-styled Whigs, to accomplish their own designs. Is it because the party is destitute of men of talents, integrity, and qualifications thattbey thus call upon their political opponents to fill their offices! No this cannot be. A party making such pretentions to decency, talents, &c. cannot-- make this an excuse. Is it for the reason thattbey are in favor of rotation in ojjlce, (their political watch-word,) and are willing to support their opponents on this principle? No this would be inconsistent, for they are daily crying out proscription,
and intimating that the Jackson party fill all the
offices: and the fact of their calling meetings to
nominate Jackson men, when there are candidates of the same political character already in the field,
iea sufficient proof that they do not act upon this principle. Men who are not impelled to action,
generally act through motive; and we beg leave to in cuire into the motive of this grand political vhenom
.enon. Our opinion is this and we see no other
reasonable one that can be given: When they are so situated, (which by the way is frequent) that the
success oi a candidate of their party is utterly hopeless, they select a man who is known to be a Jack-
