We are requested to sav tliat there will be a Two days -Meeting helil at the "Methodist Church in this place, commencing on Saturday, the 2ith instant. Rev. John P. Durbin is expected to be in attendance on the occasion. The Philadelphia Saturday Courier, a paper not long since highly praised and very liberally subscribed for in this part of the country, publishes, ia a late No., a goodly number of names of delinquent subscribers, under the head of "Black List.1 On running our eye over the Indiana list of patrons, we discover a name very much like that of our neighbor of the Centreville Times. We hope, however, it does not mean him; as we should be sorry to see any of the profession set so bad an example, as to refuse or neglect to pay the printer regularly.
I Mk. Cclley: Mr. Stevens, of the Rising -Sun, 2 i quoted by you in the last Palladium, state w That by
the express conuition or my being a candidate, lie views me as already withdrawn and hs in consequence discontinued my name. A little too fast, friend Stevens: (See postscript to my communication.) I will speak to his note at the earliest convenient day. I wish to act correctly and understanding, and withal perfectly friendly in the matter. In haste. A. J. COTTON.

A Wonderful Case. Having had occasion to visit Koxbury this morning, I called upon Dr. Stewart, and was shown a worm just taken away from a young man, which was over 30 feet in length! Its appearance wa3 perfectly white, with joints beginning almost imperceptibly at the head, and increasing in size and length to its extremity the longest being something more than an inch. The head ran to a point as tine as that of a lancet. Its body was flat, and about half an inch at the widest part. When first discharged it convoluted for some time. Its
power of contraction and expansion were as great as
j those of the leech, its strength perhaps greater, for Speed of the Mails. We would just mention, as j its contractions around the linger were extremely a kind of set-off to the complaints of delays in the painful. The voung man, who is about 28 vears of
mail conveyance, that the Centreville, Ia. paper of
the lbth inst. was received at mis o.nce iour cays before it was printed, according to date. After this we hope to hear no mere of the tardiness of the mails.
We regret to learn that the office of the Liberty Republican, in Union county in this state, has been in whole or in part destroyed by fire.
age, says he leeis connuent this creature has been with him from infancy, and so great was the torture occasioned by it, that he thought death could only relieve him. He now, however, thinks his prospect fair for a continuation of life. Dr. Stewart invites the curious to call and see it at his house. He has it preserved in spirits. It is really a curious case.
We re-publish to-day, for the information of our teadcrs in this and Switzerland counties, the law passed at the last session of the Legislature, to revise and amend the township system; and to authorize and require the appointment of collectors of county and state revenue in the several townships in said counties.
Bicknelfs Counterfeit Detector and Bank Abc L,ist. We have been favored with a few numbers of this publication, and take a pleasure in recommending it to the attention and patronage of our merchants and traders. It is issued monthly from the city of Philadelphia, and contains, in addition to an extensive notice of altered and counterfeit note, a table of the rates of exchange at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New-York, and Boston; and a list of the solvent and insolvent banks in the several states. Terms, per year, $1, payable in advance.
A young Lady of Sunitervilie, S. C. lately brought her action of slander against an individual of that place, for having circulated reports against the character of the plaintiff. The jury returned a verdict of $1,000 damages, which may be considered a very exemplary one, as the defendant is poor. In Luzerne county, Pa. a man named Horace Williams, has been sentenced to pay a fine of $500, and to be imprisoned one year in the penitentiary for sending a challenge to fiirht a duel. The assassin of Casper Hauser is said to have been arrested and committed for trial. His conviction is presumed certain, and his confession is looked for with great curiosity. Arrival extraordinary. Col. David Crockett has arrived in this city on a visit, and established his head quarters at the American Hotel. He is, of course, "the last lion," and by no means the least attractive one that has so honored us. JSt'eic-Yorker, May H.

Specie. Mr. Benton, in his great speech upon the currency, estimates the whole amount of specie in
the U. S., in Banks and in circulation, at less than thirty millions of dollars. France has now a specie circulation of Three Hundred and Fifty Millions, and England a circulation of One Hundred and Thirty Millions. The smallest paper money in France is for $100. In England for $25. In the 12 years previous to 1833, the Bank, although expressly prohibited by its charter, has sold and exported in that time forty millions of specie including four and a half mii.ions of Spanish milled dollars; the only foreign coin which is a legal tender in the U. States. No one can wonder at the scarcity of specie here, or fail to seethe object of the Bank in getting it out of the country. Bangor Rep.

The stock, we take pleasure in saying, has been taken generally in small amounts, and in this way it has been distributed among a large number of the citizens of the district a circumstance that must and will give the bank additional interest and credit, when in operation.
Extraordinary Death. In New-York, a few days since, an infant only six months old, was killed by a cat having sucked its blood from the nose of the child,
while asleep in the cradle. The child was found i

Lagvira, Feh. 22, 1 S3 i. Matters go on here tolerably well, and I think shortly, of all the republics of South America, this and Boliva will be the only ones where security for persons and property will be found, the other confederacies being now plunged in civil war and, anarchy. By the latest advices from New Granada, it is understood, that Smtander is perfectly detested since he ordered the execution of a number of the most respectable citizens. In answer to an inrpiiry by Mr. Williams, of N. C. in the House of Representatives, Mr. Polk stated that there were 30,000 applications for pens-ons now before the Pension Oilice, and not yet decided

Meeting. A meeting of the citizens of Manchester, we are requested to say, will be held at the house of Oliver Heustis, on Monday next, to consider matters in reference to the Hail Road from this place to Indianapolis.
The bill for the improvement and extension of the Cumberland Road, passed the Senate on the 0th inst. It appropriates for the purposes named $6."2,(500; and provides that as soon as the road shall be put in good repair, it shall be surrendered to the several states through which it passes, and the U. States relieved from any further expense for the repair thereof.
Congress. The Senate on the 7th inst. determined by a vote of 27 to IG.that the protest of the president "be not entered on the journals." The following are the yeas and nays on the question: Yeas Messrs. Rell," Ribb, Black, Calhoun, Clay, Clayton, Hwing, Frelinghuysen, Kent, Knight, Leigh, Moore, Naudain, Poindexter, Porter, Prentiss, Preston, Robbing Silsbee, .Smith, Southard, Kprague, Swift, Toinlinson, Tyler, Waggaman, Webster. 27. Flour. Wc are pleased to see that the price of

with his $S0,000. This created some noise, in the neighborhood, and the hanks sustained a run for a few days. The famous Billitnorc agent arrived in due course of tho stage, with ono twentieth the sum, to wit, with about ,$'1000, for which, he got whatever he asked. In the mean time the whole community rose en masse there was but one feeling one sentiment. The Binks shall be sustained. The capitalists and the holders of real estate proffered to each banks their whole credit offered to mortgage their entire estate and give their individual bonds. The result of all this was tho immediate restoration of perfect confidence, the return of all the sums of specie which had been abstracted by neighborhood holders of the piper. Simultaneously with tin's noble conduct of cur own citizens, news reached us that Messrs. Cohen, of Baltimore, with their characteristic magnanimity had directed tho banks to draw on them to any amount; all of which has ended in
estabijsimig tinner than ever the standing iind credit of our banking institutions. It is but justice to say that our friends at Harpers Ferry have returned promptly the specie takon a way by them, as noticed above. VIRGINIA ELECTION'S. We shall endeavor, in a few days, to present a full list of the returned members to the Virginia Legislature, with a classification, as far p.s practicable, to designate their party predilections. The statements of the Intelligencer and Whig are not to be relied on. Whenever a member is returned who dissents, in any particular, from the measures of the administration, he is set down by these prints as absolutely against it. If he does not prefer Mr. Van Buren to all the rest of the world for the Presidency, he is set down as at war with the administration. If he ever took exception to the. poclamation, he is against the President in toto if he disapproved the removal of the deposites, he is the irreconcilable opponent of all his measures. In this way, with the help of some downright forced impressment as to some members, the Whig ?.nd Intelligencer have made a large majority in the next Legislature on their side. It will vanish, when day-light is shed upon it, like a mist. We venture the prediction that no majority will be found in the next

We give to-day, according to promise, a sketch of the debate in the House of Representatives, on the -general appropriation bill. The debate, it will be seen, comprises the speech of Mr. Lane, followed by

v ance. me wnoie will be found well worth v of a perusal; particularly when it is understood that it was in this debate in the speech here given, that Mr. Chilton used up Mr. Lane, according to the logic of the editors of the Madison paper. We must confess that we cannot see any thing very extraordinary in the remarks of Mr. C. He, to be sure, mkes a heavy eet at Mr. Lane, but in no part of his speech do we see the overpowering cut and thrust hits at our representative, alluded to. We leave this, however, to be judged of by our readers, with this remark, that, unless wc are very much deceived in the man, Mr. Lane is a match for Mr. C. in any way he may think proper to take him; and if he did not think proper to reply to his tirade, it was not because he felt unable to meet him on his own ground and with his own weapons.
