0?- A journeyman printer would meet with employment, by immediate application at this office. 07" James G. Ready Esq., candidate for governor, has signified hia intention, by means of printed cards, to deliver an address at this place on Monday the 24th inst.; and at llarrison the day following- ' We would tender our thanks to Messrs. Tipton and Hendricks, of the Senate, and Messrs. Lane and Boon, of the house of representatives, for their kind attention in forwarding us documents and newspapers, during the present session of congress.
The Louisville Herald, a leading and ably conducted opposition paper, was discontinued on the 1st inst. The editor gives as the cause, the want of punctuality on the part of those taking the paper a very common, complaint among publishers.
Township Election. The election held in this township, last week, resulted in the election L. G. Elder, Evan Watkins, and James Thompson, as constables; A. F. Gage, Joshua Sanks, and E. W. Jackson, as trustees; John Lawrence, as clerk; and Micah Gary, as treasurer. We are informed that the election in Manchester resulted in the election of Mark M'Cracken, John 13. Clark, and Charles W. Wright, as justices; and A. It. Pond, J. P. Milliken, and C. C. Jaqueth, as constables. We have not learned who were elected to the other offices in the township.
' Aeto Townsftip. The board of commissioners, for this county, at their late meeting, formed a new township out of Lawrenceburgh, by stricking from it on the north, congressional township No. G, in range one cast. The new republic is christened Miller. We presume that measures will soon be taken to give it officers, and place it on a footing with the original townships.

provements which have been made in the mills in this vicinity, and the new ones which have been erected, give reason to believe that the inconvenience arising from the scarcity of lumber, if not altogether obviated, will at least be greatly lessened. A steam mill is intended to be erected here, during the summer, and will be ready to commence operations in the fall. Would it not be well for those of our eastern brethren, who are preparing to move west, to turn their eyes in this direction! Industr ious men of any description farmers, mechanics, or laborers might come here with a certainty of success. The land is of excellent quality and easy to acquire; laborers and artificers are in great demand; wages are good; cash is more abundant than in almost any other newly settled country; and last tho' not least, the climate is particularly healthy. White-Water Canal. By a letter from Mr. J. L. Williams, engineer, we learn that the Wabash canal commissioners have directed a survey of the line of canal from this place to Nettle creek, in Wayne county, as required by a law of last session of the Legislature; and that he is now engaged in an examination of the route, preparatory to a more careful survey hereafter. We presume he will soon reach this place, when we shall be able to ascertain some further particulars. It will be seen by the correspondence between the governor of this state and that of Ohio, published today, that that state has given its consent to the survey and location of so much of the canal route up the
White-Water valley, as lies within the limits of
Ohio.
Congress, we discover, is still engaged in discussing the deposite question. The committee of Ways
and Means, to which the letter of the secretary ot
the treasury was referred, in the house of represen
tatives, reported on the 4th inst. 1 he report in lull has not yet been received. The Globe of the 5th
inst. contains about two columns of the conclusion,
prefaced by some remarks, clearly indicating that
the committee has sustained the secretary. The following resolutions accompany the report and are
presumed to contain the substance of all the matter in it, subject to the action of the house: 1. Resolved, That the Bank of tho United States ought not to be rechartcred. 2. Resolved, that the public deposites ought not to be restored to the Bank of the United States. . 3. Resolved, That the State Bunks ought to be continued aa tho places of deposite of the public money, and tli3t it is expedient for Congress to make further provision by law, prescribing the mode of selection, the securities to be taken, and the manner and terms on which they are to be om-ploycd.
4. Resolved, That, for tho purpose of ascer-' tain'ng, as far as practicable, tho causo of the commercial embarrassment and distress, complained of by numerous citizens of tho United States, in sundry memorials which have been presented to Congress at the present session; and of inquiring whether the charter of the Bank of the United States has been violated, and also what corruptions and abuses have existed in its management; whether it has used its corporate power, or money, to control the press, to interfere in politics, or influence elections ; and whether it has had any agency, through its management, or money, in producing the existing pressure a select Committee be appointed to inspect tho books, and examine into tho proceedings of the said Bank; who shall report whether the .provisions of the charier have been violated or not; and also what abuses or malpractices have existed in the management of said Bank; and that the said committee be authorized to send for persons and papers, and to summon and examine witnesses on oath, and to examine into the affairs of tho said
Bank and branches; and that they are further authorized to visit the principal Bank, or any of its branches, for the purpose of inspecting the books, correspondence, accounts, and other papers connected with its management or business; and that the said committee be required to report the result of such investigation, together with the evidence ihey may take, at as early a day as practicable. New Orleans Argus. Turn-out at Lowkltj. We learn that extraordinary excitement was occasioned at Lowell, last week, by an announcement that the wages paid in
some departments would be reduced 15 per cent, on the 1st of March. The reduction principally affected the female operatives, and they had several meetings or caucuses, at which a young woman presided, who took an active part in persuading her associates to give notice that they should quit the mills, and to induce them to "make a run" on the Lowell Bank and the Savings Bank, which they did. On Friday morning, the young woman referred to was dismissed, by the Agent, from her place in the mill where she worked, and on leaving the office, after receiving "a bill of her time," as the phrase is, waved her calash in the air, as a signal to others, who were watching from the windows, who immediately "struck," and assembled around her, in despite
of the overseers. The number soon increased to nearly eight hundred. A procession was formed, and they marched about the town to the amusement of a mob of idlers

"I think the opposition have almost given up the hope of defeating Mr. Van Burcn's election. Indeed, there is but one circumstance that can do it, and that is, the refusal of his friends to place Col.
Johnson on the ticket as v ice President. I do not think they will refuse, but prudence requires that caution should be observed, least others may become disaffected at not having their favorite placed on the ticket. "There is no concealing the fact, that Col. Johnson has more personal, active popularity than any man in the Union, except CJen. Jackson. I have seen it fully illustrated here since my arrival. The proceedings of the minority of our Legislature will have a good effect, and I hope will incline the whole party to place the Colonel on the Democratic ticket for Vice President. Fan Buren and Johnson can carry a triumphant majority over all combinations."

We are told that one of the leaders mounted a pump and made a flaming Mary Woelstoneroft speech on the rights of women, and the iniquities of the "monied aristocracy," which produced a powerful effect on her auditors, and they "determined to have their own way if they died for it." The storm however, has been, aa we le3rn, hushed for the present, and hopes are entertained that it will entirely be lulled, by casting on the troubled waters a little oil of conciliation. Mr. Tanneiiim,, its editor, says that he is "compelled to take this step for the simple reason that, at this time of almost unexampled pressure, he has not the means of continuing it." The Herald was opposed to the present administration and an advocate of a renewal of the charter of the United States Bank. We take great pleasure in saying, that among the opponents of the administration, none has been found more honorable than the Editor of the "Herald" giving facts uncolored by party prejudice, and never descending to low scurrility and personal abuse. A bridge across the St. Mary's river has been contracted for, and will be completed by the 1st of October next. In addition to this, that part of the canal running through the town is intended to be located an d put-under contract. Two causes have hitherto retarded the growth of this

building materials: but now that the advantages of
this place, and the inducements it offers to enterprising and industrious mechanics, are becoming more
