Saturday VIoi'iiin, Feb. 22.
The speech of Mr. Ha nnegan, noticed last week, is given on the 1st page of this day's paper. The Wabash river, says the Terre Haute paper of the loth inst., is in good boating order. One steam boat, (the Sylph,) from Cincinnati had arrived at that place, and gone up the river. The Cincinnati Advertiser says, "the report concerning the insolvency of the Banks of Sciota and Geaugua, have turned out to be entirely unfounded. Their notes are now in as good repute as ever among our citizens." Illinois. Joseph Duncan, William Kinney and It. K. M'Laughlin, are announced in the papers of this, state as candidates for Governor, and Alexander M. Jenkins, for Lieut. Governor, at the ensuing August election. For Congress, 1st district, John Reynolds and Charles Slade; 2d district, Zadok Casey; 3d district, Benjamin Mills and William L. May. Slate Bank. It will be seen by reference to the proceedings of the directors of the State Bank, published in another column, that the several branches, authorized by the charter, have been located. The branch for this district has been fixed at this place, and books for the subscription of stock will be opened here on the 7th day of April next, under the direction of three commissioners. The commissioners, we understand, arc Messrs. Omer Tousey, Geo. P.Bucll, and David Guard. The amount of stock required to be taken at each branch is $80,00030,000 of which is to be paid in specie by individuals, at such time, previous to the organization of the branch, as shall be directed by the directors of the State Bank; and the balance in two annual instalments, secured by real estate on mortgage. From what we have learned, we are of opinion that the stock of the branch here will be taken without difficulty. The business, the wealth, and the enterprize of the place and the surrounding country, warrant such a belief The trade in the single article of pork, at this place alone, since the first of December last, exceeds $150,000; and this, at a moderate calculation, fulls short of one half the business of the trading season. No county in the state, we venture to assert, exports a larger amount of produce in the year than this; nor is there one whose credit stands higher in the lower country market, or whose produce brings a better price. This being the fact, and believing that the establishment of a bank in this county, would greatly facilitate trade, increase business, create a ready and profitable market for the surplus produce of the farmers of the surrounding country, and in itself be proGtable to the stock holders, we can sec nothing to prevent the branch in this district from commen cinjjf business, as toon as the fund commissioners shall have effected a loan on the part of the state. A Bite! Some pork dealers, not a thousand miles from this place, overhauling and weighing a lot of lard, a few days since, discovered something unusual in the appearance of a few kegs they had purchased during the cold weather. Turning them over to inspect them more closely, and removing the bungs, they were not a little surprised to find them filled with ice, save a small space around the bunghole, which was covered with lard. The purchasers do not recollect from w hom the kegs were received, and unless the demand for ice is better below than usual, it is apprehended they will lose by the trade. Be this as it may, it's a pretty good speculation on the part of the venders, and should rank next to that of the wooden bacon hams, or oak leaf cigars, of newspaper notoriety. The Louisville Advertiser states, that the directors of the branch bank of the United States, at that place, have refused to carry into effect an order from the parent bank, requiring them to curtail the discounts of the present month 220,000. "We arc pleased to see by the following article, that N. B. Palmer, Esq. has been appointed, by the Governor, Treasurer of State. A better selection, nor one that would have been more generally approved, could not, we believe, have been made. We understand that Nathan B. Palmer, late Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been appointed by the Governor, Treasurer of State, to iill the vacancy occasioned by the election of Samuel Merrill, Esq. a3 President of the State Bank. "We are informed that the Executive was governed, in this appointment, by the almost unanimous expression of the members of the late Legislamrc, in addition to his high regard for tho qualifications of Mr. Palmer for the ofiicc. Indiana Democrat. The following brief speech, made by the veteran editor of the Cincinnati Advertiser, and published in his paper of the 12th inst., is, in our opinion, as good if not a little better than three fourths of those made in Congress on the deposite question. It Avould be well for the country, and quite as honorable, were members of Congress to govern themselves by such views as arc here presented. j A Cure for the Pressure. Let members of Congress quit talking, and come to action let them give up long speeches, which are neither listened to, nor read, and come to a vote on the question of commitment; then let the Committee of Ways and Means be as prompt in action in short, let us have a speedy decision whether or not the Bank shall be rcchartcred. If the affirmative of the case, tlicro will be no excuse for the continuance of tho pressure if in the negative, the point will be equally conclusive, aud the Bank will rather go on as usual than have their money locked up in their vaults; it was placed there not for the purposa of lying idle, not to accumulate more, and when they rind there isno furthur hope of recharter, they will make the best use of their time. It is not the In. terestbTthe Bank to create Bankruptcies or Insol- . venciestheir own property is at stake if they press their debtors too hard, much of that property will be sacrificed; and we therefore believe that if the business now before Congress was speedily and finally settled, either charter or no charter, the pressure would wear away, as the Sun of the Spring seasons dispels the murky clouds of winter, and we would have agoodaadsafe spring and summer trade. For sore Throat. Put a half a pound of figs into a Quart of water, and boil it to a pint then open and strain the figs. Add two table spoonful of veait. and the sarna ouantilv of honey. Garble the throat with this liquid, and cure is certain.
