Wolves. We are informed that an unusual number of wolves has lately entered the northwestern part of this county, ar.d taken up their quarters in the thick woods on the waters of Tanner's creek. Some sheep have been killed and other acts committed by the new settlers, of a character very illy calculated to gain the good feelings of our citizens, or obtain from them the rites of hospitality. Presuming that the right of these hairy marauders to the soil has been fairly extinguished, and the territory laid off into townships, and our laws extended over it, the most spirited preparations are making to drive them from the country. On Monday last, 5 or 600 persons assembled in the infested neighborhood, and after forming lines to encircle 5 or 6 miles square, marched to a central point, hoping by the manoeuvre to enclose and destroy a portion of the enemy. But some how or other, owing probably to the machinations of some anti-state right-ites, a loop-hole was left in the lines, at which all the
savages escaped, almost without harm to any one. A large number were seen and one or two shot at, and .supposed wounded, but not a single scalp was taken. A few harmless deer were the whole trophies of the hunt. This was provoking, and aproclamafion was immediately issued for the arming and equipping a new force, and calling on all good and true state rights men to stand to their arms, and sustain the proper authorities in the due execution of the laws "within our chartered limits." The next campaign opens on Saturday next, and there is every reason to believe it will be prosecuted successfully. Should Gen. Jackson, Martin Van Buren, or any other emissary of the general government, be found giving aid and countenance to said savages, or conniving at their escape from legal punishment, according to our laws, the most disagreeable censequences may be expected to follow. On this subject our citizens are as determined as ever Gen. Hamilton or Gov. Gayle was, and as fully able to carry their purposes into execution. Phenomenon. On Wednesday morning last, about 5 o'clock, the attention of all, who were up at that hour, were arrested by an unusual appearance in the heavens. The stars shot across the fermament in rapid succession, and in their passage emitted such a glare of light, as to render minute objects observable at considerable distances. Now here and then there a fiery courser would start athwart the heavens, and circumscribing a vast distance, .sink from the sight below the horizon; while others seemed to take a course more immediately towards the earth, and passed from view in that direction, leaving their path for a few seconds distinctly marked by a streak of light. Their course was generally in a northern direction. We have heard no person pretend to account for the phenomenon, on rational principles; nor of any one who has seen the like before. That it prognosticates something good or bad is no doubt believed by many. The Western Statesman has promised a 'serious" account of it next week. We shall await the development with great anxiety.
The editor of the Statesman complains that other
papers extract original articles from his, without giving credit. This is very wrong, and has a most
pernicious effect on the character of the Western
press, and literature in general. We observe, how
ever, that our neighbor of the American is always
particular to quote the statesman, and it is to be
hoped others will be equally careful in future.
Fom memoirs of Zeba.ii CoLBtrcr. "In the beginning of 1815, a circumstance took place that excited much interest in Paris. A surgeon in the array, named Dautun, was arrested at a gambling house, in the Palais Royal, on the testimony of a scar on his wrist. Some time previous, the officers of the night had found while passing on their rounds, in the different parts of the city, four parcels tied up. One contained the bead, another the trunk, a third the thighs, and fourth the logs and arms of a man. In the teeth, tightly compressed, was a piece of human flesh, apparently torn out in the dying struggle. The parts were collected, and put together in their regular order and exhibited for a number of days at the Morgue. The mystery which involved this dark transaction excited auite an interest, and
numbers went to behold the corpse. The general and only conviction was that he must have been murdered; but for a number of weeks no clue was obtained to elicit information on the subject. When it came improper to keep the body longer alove ground a cist in plaster was taken, fully representing the murdered victim, and this remained much longer for the public to see. At length Dautun happened to be engaged in gambling at the Palais Royal : he played high and lost; calling for liquor to drink, and angry because the waiter was somewliat tardy, when he came with it, Dautun emptied the glass and threw it at the waiter. It was shivered into a thousand pieces, and a fragment was carried into Dautun's wrist, under the cuff of his coat. The spectators gathered around, and learning the accident wished to see the gash; he drew down his sleeve and firmly pressed it round his wrist; they insisted on seeing it; he obstinately refused. By this course, the hy-standers were at length ld to suppose that something mysterious
was involved in his conduct, and they determined
at all events tosee his wrist.
up his sleeve, and behold a scar, recently healed,
as if made by the tearing out of flesh, appeared.
The landlord had been at the Morgue, and seen the murdered man with the fl sh between the teeth, and it struck him in a moment that that flesh was torn from this man's wrist. Charging them to keep
him safe, he hastened to call in the legal authorities,
and arrested him.
In the event, Dautun confessed that being quartered at Sedan, and out of money, he came to Paris to try some adventure. Knowing that his brother had a large sum by him, directly on his arrival, he went to his lodging in a retired part of the city, about eight in the evening. He entered the house, unnoticed by the porter, and passing to his apartment, found his brother asleep. He immediately commenced his work of death; his brother waking
up defended himself, but, m addition to the surprise and horror of the moment, being in a feeble state of health, all the desperation of his struggle was overpowered. In the scuffla he tore out the flesh. Being killed, the surgeon cut up the body, tied it up in four parcels as before mentioned, secured the money and retired. He also confessed that eleven months previous he had murdered an aunt, who was living with a second husband, to obtain money. Her husband was arrested and imprisoned for a number of months, but as nothing appeared to criminate him, he had been discharged. The writer saw the unhappy fartricide on his way from prison to the place of execution."

Gvlt.t.k Van Sicklk, the last Postmaster at Claysville, Pa. to whom wo alluded some days ago as the successor both in office and crime of Christian Weirich, is also about to undergo similar punishment. He was arraigned in the U. S. The Pittsburg Gazette, in noticing the case observes, that it is a melancholy instance of human weakness as the culprit throughout his previous life had supported an unblemished character. Munchausen Eclipsed. A statement is made in the Turf Register, attested by the deposition of Maj. John Pilters of Kaskaskia, Illinois, which confirms the impression long established by some, that the Turkey Buzzard has the power of reproducing its eyes! The experiment made was thus : A buzzard was deprived of its eyes, by ripping them open, so that no part of the ball remained. "The head of the bird was then placed under one of its wings, in which position it remained a few minutes, when raising its head, both eyes were produced perfectly sound, free from blemish, and possessing in every degree the power of vision." This comparatively cruel experiment was repeated at
least fifty times, uniformly with the same result

aids-de-camp, lately presented a flg of the 'nation' of South Carolina and delivered a speech, of
which we have the following account: "He stated that South Carolina, by her brave and determined course, had driven the tiger within his den that the tyrant with his bloody bill had to succumb to the brave and chivalrous spirit of Carolina, and that they never would lay down their arms till congress had repealed the force bill. He
directed their attention to Alabama, who had risen in her might against the tyrant, and, idien the hour of trial came, South Carolina would aid her in maintaining her soil against the oppression of the despot, Jackson" We did hope that the "day of these things" was passing away that ther end was nigh.
