all made up, on purpose for him, I was' :;oing to say. Poll Jones had had quilting after quilting, end she always had her eves prcttv sharp on Bill whenever he came with the rest of the 'Hellers." The fact is, Bill Simpkins had two or throe good farms left him hy his father; and lie had a house, too. all fitted up; and therefore he was a slick prize to any of the gals that could catch him. ISill was no fool of a beau neither, when he was in company. All the gals owned he was the cutest fellow for a scrape, jest get him set out, that ever danced a double shufde or played hunt the thimble. The ruination of Bill was, his bashfulncss or slice lishn'ess, as the gals called it. Put him alone, and lie couhPnt say his soul was his own. I have known him many a time to go home with Sukv Dyer, for a mile and a half on a stretch; all lie could find to say, was, i4,tis plaguy bad going,' or "'tis quite sloshv,' or something of that sort. One cold night, 1 believe he did get hold of Suky'shand, but it frightened him so, that he blushed behind the cars, and felt much like

a fool. Bill was now getting to be in his 29th year, and began to feel quite serious. "There,' said lie to himself one day 'there was Kate Topknot 1 might h;d her, and she was a whale of a gal. 1 remember well when she turned'up Iter plaguy black eyes to me, when the moon shincd right in our faces, and said, (oh howl fell) 'Mr. Simpkins, this is the very time for falling in love. Tis hard to keep one's heart from going pit-a-

pat.' What a danvd fool I was, 1 did'nt pop-the question. I know she wanted me

to. 1 only said yes, 'tis, Miss lopknot; and looke d as killing as I could, and squeezed up her arm a little. Oh, you fool, Bill Simpkins, why did'nt you tell her she was the gal you liked, and not go like a great booby, and kiss the coat where her arm touched. But she's gone now, she was married three years come next Christmas night. "There was (Bill continued his soliloquy) ''Poll Jours I like Poll; she was a master piece for fun, and when she was on her high heels, no one could come up to her. Poll always used to ccine a good
