JLawrcsicelnirgh, April 7. Inconsequence of the appearance of the Cholera, in London, the authorities of the city of Boston, Mnss., have issued an order of quarantine, affecting all vesscld arriving from any of tiic British ports. The following named person? were elected corporation officers, at the election held on Monday last : President A. St. C. Vance. Council .Tabcz Percival,.loIm Saltmarsh, John Shook, Thomas Palmer and I). V. Culley. Wabash and Erik Canal. The acting commissioner has given notice that sealed proposals will he received at Fort Wayne, from the iiOth of May to the 1st of June next, for constructing a portion of the middle division of the Wahash and Erie Canal. The terms, plans, estimates, &.c. ascertained by application to the commissioners, at Fort Wavne. Between the Ifith and 23d ult. 11 Steam Boats touched at Vinccnnes on their way up the Wabash, laden with goods, salt, iron, and other supplies for merchants in the north western part of this state. The trade of the Wabash is already very considerable, and increasing beyond all calculation. The resolution submitted by Mr. Clay, in the Senate, it will be seen by a sketch of a debate, given to-day, has been referred to the committee on manufactures, accompanied bv various instructions. A bill will therefore be reported, and then we shall have the whole discussion over again, which was had on the resolution. The time spent in arguing the tariff question, in the abstract form presented by Mr. Clay, we incline to believe, is lost to any good purpose. Nothing tangible or certain has been produced by it, save a few long winded speeches, better adapted, in many particulars, to the electioneering stump, than to the examination of a grave and interesting question. The town of New Albany, in this state contains, according to a late enumeration J4U4 inhabitants. Increase since the census in 1830324. tauimr i The bocks for subscriptions to the capital stock of the Lawrenceburgh Insurance Company, were opened in mis place on Monday last, and closed on Wednesday night, when it was ascertained that near 1000 shares had been taken 600 more than is required by the charier to commence operations. The election for directors takes place on Monday the 23d inst. The members of the Virginia legislature met in convention at the city of Richmond, on the 14th ult. General Jackson was unanimously nominated for re-election as president of the United States. Mr. Philip P. Barbour was put in nomination as a candidate for vice president, but, after considerable debate, the convention adjourned without making any nomination. I?y an idvertisement in another column, it will be seen that Col. Polke, Michigan road commissioner, will let for improvement, to the lowest bidder, on certain days and places stated, all that portion of said road lying between Logansport and the Ohio river, at Madison. We submit the question to some of the citizens of this county, whether they would not find it to their advantage to attend the sales and take contracts? TO Tilt: EDITOR. Washington City, March 2lsi, 1S32. Deau Sik: The bill from the Senate, supplemental to the several acts for the sale of the public kinds, was this dav, after undergoing several material amendments, ordered lobe engrossed for a third reading By the provisions of this bill, should it final-lyp-ips the House, and the Senate concur in the amendments made, which it is believed it will, the right of preemption is granted to actual settlers upon the public hm, and the liberty of entering in lots of ferry crws, or quarter quarter sections.
j-xc the applicant sh'tll file affidavit that j
! mikes the entry for himse It and not m trust for another and for actual cultivation or for the use of his farm. It is believed this bill will effect two very salutary purposes it will greatly facilitate the settlement of the country, by bringing into immediate market a large portion of the public lands, which otherwise, in all probability, would lie unoccupied for years to come: for its provisions are exclusively confined to those who intend and make the purchase for actual settlement, or for the use of his (the applicant's) ad joining farm ; and while it will thus effect an immediate sale of so large a portion of the public dominion, it prevents the non-resident speculator from puchasing choice lots with a view of profiting by its enhanced value, produced by the improvements of the surrounding lands, made by the labour of the actual settler. To the industrious Door man, who can raise $?Q, it will afford an opportunity of procuring a small home of a freehold for himself, upon which he may raise and support his family; and which, although small, is as much to him as a section would be to the wealthy. By ordinary industry and economy, with that portion of the products of his labour saved, which is annually paid to his landlord in the way of rents, the settler will be enabled to increase his small estate, by the purchase of adjoining forty acre lots; besides, it will relieve him from the subserviency of a tenant, subject to the usurpation and dictatorial will of an avaricious landlord and speculator. A bill has passed the house of representatives establishing new post routes, and vacating others considered to be useless; which is now before the Senate. By this bill, as it passed the House, a post route is established from Lawrenceburgh by Cambridge, York Ridge, German village, &,c. to Rushville, also, from Rising Sun by Hartford, Bisbie's mill and Crcsar creek to Versailles, to return by Moore's mill and Wilmington to Lawrenceburgh ; also, from Florence, by Burlington, Ky. to Rising Sun. The committee raised to investigate the books, &c. of the U. States Bank, left here for Philadelphia this morning. I am, very respectfully, Your ob't servant, JONATHAN M'CARTY.
