DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE yir president Oar legislature teems to be rnucii employed in attempts at revising the law. A resolution has been presented, f to repeal the law of last session, in relation to negroes and mulattoes, which was indefinitely postponed. The law regulaVng interest 01 money, the militia. justi ccs, revenue, road laws, &c. are prolific subjects, and shou'd all the proposed a'tervions be adopted, cur Code will be but the shadow of what it was. It would seen to be the duty
cf representatives to oppose these innovations, etcept in cases obviously and iirperioii'ly de manding; legislative interfere'ice. After expending 8 or 10,000 dollars in revising and essaying to perfect a system of laws, knd before four months' time has been atTorded for testing its utility and appropriate bearing, it evinces mn unbecoming fickleness in our legis.ators to tear it to tatters by way of amendment, as they . ...... : r i-.... are termeu oetier nave 6om.e impcneuk iaw than be so constantly changing them, that no one knows, or can know what they are, short of employing his whole time in their study- There are many and important subjects, demanding the attention of the legislature; and to these, particularly? ought the attention of each member to be directed; leaving those of minor importance, and on which there is no settled or fixed opinion, to the further consideration and investigaton of the public. The sale of the Michigan Uoad Lands, and the application fof the proceeds to the completion and further improvement of the work, is a matter of much interest to our county, and one which ought to engross much of the attention of her representatives. The road, as far as Logan sport, was put under contract the last year, ant with the exception of a few sections, has been opened ahd cleared of timber. Thecost of opening it to that point will, it is supposed, amount to 70 or 75,000 dollars, including expenses of surveys, sales&c. of lands. Forty-six sections were soli in October, for a little over 49,090 dollars, leaving 21 1 sections yet to be dispo sed of. either at public or private sale, as the legislature may direct. It is computed that the grant will open the road to the lake and leave a surplus of about $150,000 to be applied to its improvement; or something like S60O per mi'e, the whole distancei This sum, judiciously applied, in bridging, &c. would, no doubt, make a tolerable, if not an exctllent road at all seasons. There has been a very learned and rweep:ng discussion in the Senate, oci a joint resolution, offered by Mr. Ewing, instructing and requesting "our Senators and Representatives in ConCress, to oppose modifications of the Tariff, and to vote for rechartering the U.S. Bank. Various amendments were offered, by way of modification ; but they were all rejected, and on the 19th the resolution was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading by a considerab le majority. It is not probable that it will be adopted by the House with its present features The house adjourned on the morning of the 20th, to prepare for, and attend the funeral of Mr. Cone, a member from Vigo county, who died the evening previous. He is spoken of as a gentleman of urbane manners and extensive arruirement3. The petitions for anew county at Rising ua have not yet been acted upon in the Senate rt would not be an easy ta;k, nor c-ne that could be despatched in the compass of a few eentences, to delineate all the q ialifications desirable in a President of the United States. In his character ought to be concentrate ! all the excellencies of all men. If we have a right to expect perfection in any individual, it is in him who receives, from the hands of a free peopTe, as the reward of superior merit, a trust incalculably, more honorable .t!)au the diadem of the Cxsars. His first characteristic, snd for the want of which no others, however brilliant, ought to be (considered a sufficient tpology, should be political integrity und fo-li tude. He ought to be a man, in the frmness of whose principles the people, in 11 nose emergence, could confide; and who has uniformly pursued the dictates of his own i-,-.. ment, unawed by faction, unbribed by ambition and unternfied by those who would fright him from his frp uy tnargmg him with ca apr:ce. mcons.stency, and a dereliction f cp.es once professed. This qalifi3all0n be co,s,dered the keystone of that combination cfv.rtues and excellencies, which OUffht to be ..cu iii me cnaracterof the chief J UeUr.wn. We may expect a long ad-dres-, respecting the ruinous condition ! of our nll'airs the liquidation of our national debt an crease of revenue faVcrable treaties negotiated, and other horrible calamities and all because Henry Clay and his political prospects are in the vocative. The above appointments wpre only pro tern. On Tuesday Gov. Barbour was appointed President; Msra. Trimble, of Ohio, Kent, of Md. P. B. Porter, of N. Y. Temple, of Vt. were the Vice Presidents. 155 members were present. Henry Clay, was nominated for the Presidency. There was j no nomination for the Vice Presidency. Cincinnati Repub. Unnatural Marriage. Rumor has been exceedingly industrious, for the last week , upon a very singular circumstance, being no other than that of a man, residing in North Second street, heretofore considered a highly respectable 'citizen, and the father of two or three grown up children, having married his ozvn sister! and in a comparatively short lime subsequent to the death of his first wife. The excitement produced by so extraordinary an act, seems extensively to pervade all classes, and several societies to which he belong?, have made arrangements for expelling him immediately. Philadelphia paper. Were it not for a few office seeker?, fl'e people would every where settle down quietly in support of Gti. Jackson and liti administration. It is only these men who interrupt, by their bra wling-, the general harmony. The people are properrus, happy and satisfied; but this almost universal contentment, far (rom silencing the murmur of selfish demagogue, only makt;s thm j more desperate and uproarious. Will j .the people listen to the complaints of such men? Will theyT when l!i-y see our country prosperous at home almost beyond any former sample, and reepected abroad , be'.xcited to ei uage in angry political conliicts, merely to subserve the sellisb vietvs of disappointed or ambitious individualc. Our country, it is admitted, is doing well; and it is a safa maxim to practice, to k4let well alone." The result of the election in thi. state plainly shevre iC people think so. Utica Obs. Neither Mr. Clay nor Mr. Wirt, have the shadow of a chance of even making a respectable run; whether both are withdrawn, or only ot o with ! drawn; whether they run double or single it is all the same, perfectly immaterial. In no form or shape can any uncertainty be created about General Jjckson's " re-election. There will. I there can, in no event, be any serious j contest.
