the report of the opening of the West India ports a hoax; they now are equally honorably employed in trying to impress the belief that no benefits are to be derived from opening of the ports to the trade of the United States. We are not prepared to point out the particular advantages to be gained from a free and unrestricted intercourse with the West India ports, but would infer from the noise raised by the opposition, of the news being used, by the Jackson party, for electioneering purposes in Maine and elsewhere, that there is more importance in this trade, than the enemies of the administration are willing shall be known. At all events it seems that the late administration was willing to regain it, on the terms accepted by the present administration.

We have been asked why we do not give the result the elections in Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, &x. Would the friends of Mr. Clay have us say the English inhabit London or the Irish Dublin? The opposition to the administration of president Jackson are well known to be the majority in those states, and that they should elect men of their own politics was a matter altogether natural, where party spirit prevails as it does in New England. We deem it suflicient to advise our readers of the changes which take place in the politics of the states, whether they be for or against us. We would not give a tig to have every opposition editor in the union assure his readers that eighteen slates are friendly to the re-election of president Jackson; nor do we suppose they would ask of us more than say that the balance are against him whether for Webster, Clay, or a third person we are not prepared to decide.
Elections, We give in another coluroo the result of the Maryland election for delegates. The friends of the administration are considerably in the minority, a fact that would incline one to believe that the state had undergone a thorough change in national politics. The votes given will not; however, warrant sue h an opinion; tho' they show considerable opposition gain since last year. In many counties that ticket succeeded only by a majority of from 20 tf50; and throughout the stale by about 1000, as has been pretty certainly ascertained by an aggregate calculation of votes. This is the great victory over which the friends of Mr. Clay rejoice with such fullness of heart. Such an event was necessary to recruit their drooping spirits, and encourage them to persevere a little longer in a fruitless ffort to put dowu those whom the people have willed to serve them. We have few returns from Ohio. The State Bulletin gives it as probable thai geii. Lucas is elected, and the Cincinnati Gazette that gen. M'Arthur is elected gverni r. The vo'h it Butler county was for Lucas 1490, M'Arihur S25. Corwiii's majority for congress, iii Butltr and Warren; is stated at 600. Sianberry is said to be re-elected to congress, in Columbus district, by a small majority. Many of our readers feeling an interest in the Hamilton co. election, we give ihe result entire. Governor.

Destructive Fire, with loss of life. About 3 olock on Sunday morning last a fire broke out in the bakery of Wm. B. Humpert, No. 224 Bowerv, between Spring and Prince streets, which resulted in the destruction of some lives and much valuable property. Three persons (two appprentices, one a German, and the other French, and one journeyman, bakers) are missing.
The remains of two lads, in horrible condition, were found among the ruins one of them was bereft of Ihe arms, legs and head. They could not, of course, be identified, but are presumed to be the relics of the two. boys mentioned above. The fate of one other has not yet been traced, but believed to be among the ruins. They were all asleep at the time. A lad of 14 escaped by throwing himself from a two-story window in his night attire. JV. Y. Gazette.

Making Yellow Butter. In Scotland, we are told, the dairy women give a fine colour and flavor to their butter, by grating some orange carrots, the juice of which after being strained, is mixed with cream previous to churning. The quantity of carrot juice necessary for this has not been prescribed, so far as our observation extends, but the judgment of the manufacturer cannot fail to suggest very nearly the quantity necessary to give the butter a proper colour. . While cows have fresh feed in the spring, probably their butter would not be much if in any degree improved by the addition ofcarrot juice. But when grass be1 . a-
comes snort or the dairy stock is led on hay, carriot juice may produce a good effect. Interesting to editors. A case ha3 oeen fcid1 in Now York, in favor of the N. Y. Daily Sentinel against Le, Pow

salutary tendency among that class of

Just as our paper was soing to Press, we received the 4State Bulletin," from which we learn that a very destructive fire took place in the Penitentiary: the damage done is estimated at 5000 dollars. It is supposed to have been set on fire by one or more of the convicts, though the culprits have not as yet been detected. Lebanon , Ohio, Democrat. The U. S.
