LilVREITCE BURGH.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10 1829.

A member writing from Indianapolis to the editors, states it as probable that the legislature will- adjourn about the. 15thor 20lh inst. Ntzc York. It is stated that about 600 fires occurred in the city of New York the past year, by which property to the amount of 030,000 dollars was destroyed. The Cincinnati Advertiser complains that the monopolizers of that city refuse to sell salt by the barrel, except it be taken at the weight marked upon the barrels at the works; and will make no allowance for those falling short of that weight. If such impositions are quietly submitted to, purchasers may shortly be required to accept of salt barrels for barrels of salt. Kentucky, To meet the current ex. penses of government for the next four years, and to defray the public debt, the committee of ways and means have recommended to the house of representatives to increase state taxes to ten cents on every $100 worth of property. A Pittsburgh paper cautions tbe pub. lie against base dollars in imitation of Spanish mill, dated 1 802, 1 807, 1 820 and 1827. They are well executed, and without close inspection may be imposed on good judges of money. Robbery. A. VV. Howe, deputy post

master at Norwalk, Huron countv, Ohio

has been taken up on suspicion of robbing

the posl-oflice, and committed to prison

for trial. Circumstances are strongly against him. Larvrenceburgh Legislature. This association being reorganized, by electing E. G. Pratt, governor; J. W. Hunter, spjsaker; T. Davis, treasurer; and D. V. Culley, secretary, will meet at the office of J. V.Hunter,esq. on Monday evening next to proceed to business. Those wishing to become members or be present as spectators, are respectfully invited to attend. GEN. VV INFIELD SCOTT. From the Richmond Euquirer.'

"We have before us a pamphlet in 50 pages, entitled "An abstract of a correspondence with the executive, relative to the rank or command of major generals

Scott and Macomb" closed by a letter

from gen. Scott of the 30th ult. to tbe

secretary of war, and the secretary's order for the suspension of gen. Scott from

the command of the western department

of the army. I he pamphlet is published by general S. with a view of inform1 ing his friends and his countrymen, of the

relations which prevail between himself

and the executive department. The

merits of the question of brevet rank are

touched throughout the publication

but, as we have no space at present to de

vote to amy very copious extracts, we

must content oarselves with laying be fore the reader the finale, as follows:-

We presume gen. S. intends to appeal to

congress for "a declaratory are.

"Cincinnati, Ohio, Dec. 3 1828." Department of 7car,Xav. 26A, 1828. "Sir: It is not the purpose of the

president to take any tinal order in re

lation to your late very reprehensible conduct, until a sufficient time smi have elapsed for the receipt of yourdeliberate answer to the letter addressed to

you from this department on the 15th intttniit, and which contains an exposition of the views of the president on the several questions you have raised. The nature of that order will, as you perceive, depend in a great measure on the character of the answer received from you, and which the president hopes, m ay

not be wholly uninfluenced bv the con

siderations which, by his directions have

been thus presented to you. "To put a stop, in the mean time, to

the course of iriMihordination in which you have crremed fit to indulge, the pres

ident directs that from the receipt of

this letter, you will consider yourself as suspended from the command of the western department of the army, Until his further pleasure shall be made known to you. "General Atkinson has, accordingly, been directed, by an order of this date, to assume that command; and you will, therefore, without delay, transfer to him all unexecuted orders that may have been received, either from this "department, or from maj. gen. Macomb at the same time, instructing one of the of

assistant adjutant general of that depart

united stales army, Lincitmatu'1 , Richmond, Va. Dec. 20. Horrible! Mendurn and Whiteford, two, murderers confined in Chesterfield Jail, whose execution was to take place yesterday, cut their throats on Monday last, to avoid the disgrace of public execution. Whiteford, the murderer of Anderson, made the first attempt. He drew a razor several times across his thfoat, but he still survives. Mendum, who murdered Mosby, did ihe work more

effectually. He placed a knife (secretin

furnished. hun) against the wall, and by the impulse of his body, thrust it about four inches deep into the lower part of the breast; but, believing, says the Compiler,' that this was not sufficient to cause his death, he took his razor, and placing himself opposite to the mirror, drew it several times across his throat, drawing the tlesh down to give greater certainty to the stroke, and in a few seconds, fell and expired without a groan. Another of the prisoners, who was in the same room, advanced towards Mendum to wrest the ruzor from him but Mendum told him to stand offand Whiteford, with his own throat cut, seized a small stick, gave him one blow, and ordered the man not to approach! The blood runs cold at the conception of such a scene! We draw the veil over it! Let him who meditates murder, or who is the slave to his own malignant passions, remember the catastrophe of this wrc ' lied felon!

I deem it necessary to caution the public against harboring or trusting a certain HIltAM H. HUME, A Tanner by trade, and a base villain, who has most ungratefully and villainously absconded from this place. That the public may more properly Judge of his rascality, ii may be proper to state some of bis conduct and the circumstance leading to my connection with him. About ona year since I found him out of employ, and destitute of procuring a livelihood I (bought him honest, and at his earnest solicitations entered into an agreement with bimand reuted a Tanning establishment, supplied the yard with erary necessary at luy own expense, relying on bia honesty and industry for remuneration; but insleaS of this, vhat do 1 find? The CQLfidence 1 had placed io his integrity has been abused, my property squandered, and the atlairs of the yard so managed, that 1 am loser without remedy to a very considerable amount. Such was my

misplaced confidtr.ee, that the management orf

(be tannery was entirely entrusted to himself, and having other business, 1 very wldom visited the yard, or examined into the manner io which it was conducted. Taking advantage of this, he has made way with leather to tbe amount of tbite or four hundred dollars, besides various notes and accounts tot considerable amount, tbe extent of which I am unable at this time to ascertain exactly. lie is about 5 feet 6 inches high, between 21 and S3 years old, tolerably fair complexion, sandy busby head, down look, though upon the whole a pretty good looking fellow, hod very weH cal

Tbe public are cautioned against baviug any thin; to do with hitu, and Tanners are most earnestly requested neither to employ or harbor him, aa he is unworthy of any confidence whatever; and thia publication is made to discharge a duty which I think every honest man owes to community, to guard unsuspecting individuals from being deceived and imposed upon by such rakes.
