Rise of water. Within a short time prist the Ohio river rose 6 or 7 feet, but is at present falling. The water is, however, sufficiently deep to admit steam boats of a large size to ply between the fulls and Cincinnati.
A Raddish, measuring two feet in length, eighteen inches in circumforence, and weighing 8 1-4 lbs. was left in our oSice a few days since by Mr. Andrew Morgan, residing near this place. To appearance it is perfectly sound, and would no doubt have grown much larger had it been permitted to remain in the ground until the cold weather set in. Mr. Morgan intends preserving it through the winter and setting it out next spring for seed. The court of Assessment of fines for the bOth Regiment In. MilitiR, will be held at the house of Henry Dils on the 1st Monday of November, inst. The court of Appeals will be held at the sam place on the 1st Monday in December jiext.
ment, and should have no part nor lot in the west! These are the liberal minded men, who make such an eternal noise in our country, merely tk blazon their own fame, or by imposing a splendid delusion on the credulity of the people, ride themselves into office. We do not know that the editors of the Gazette are up for office, but surely their actions look much like it. Men rarely act without some motive; and as these editors must know they are doing little to benefit the cause they clamour so much about, it is reasonable to suppose they have some other object in view. We cannot reconcile it to our conscience to trifle with our readers after the manner of the Gazette, by telling them of the great and good things they may expect at the expense
of the United States, if they will4but sup
port this or that man for office, when in fact such favors do not depend on the will of any man. It is the people or their representatives that have the control
of these matters.
We do not wish by these remarks to
be understood as opposed to improve
ments, domestic industry, or Iriendly to
those who are ; but opposed to the loo
common practice of laying hold of thtm
is popular subjects, and bandying them
about forno other purpose than to get
into the favor of Ihedear people.
Since tie foregoing statement was written, wo have learned from an authentic source, that Mr. Bowie is still living Opeloitsas GazelleCanada. The report that the American flag bad been hoisted at (he British settlement of Madawoska, and attempts made to excite the French inhabitants to a rebellion, is confirmed, and much remark is excited thereat. A vagabond in St. Francis blustered up, col-' lected around him a few ignorant, hot headed fellows, who interrupted the progress of the
mail and made fruitless efforts to raise an effective mob. It is further stated that the parties gSFe in excuse for their conduct; that they acted by virtue of the government of the State of
Maine. This is too improbable and iuconsiant to claim the least notice.
The jSew-York Daily Advertiser, in speaking of the mania of steamboat passengers, to make the trip between that city and this a few minutes quicker than any others have ever done, thus examplilies the passion which some men have to hurry. "An old gentlemen in NewEngland, conveyed a just idea of the character of those who were so fond of travelling at such wondrous rate, when he said he believed "his son John, if he was riding on a streak of lightning would whip vp." The members composing the "Lawrenceburgh General Assembly,1' arc informed that the annual Session commences oa Tuesday evening next at the School Room of E. Gridley esq. Per
sons wishing to become members, are respectfully invited to attend. The most unpleasant part of an editor's duty, and doubtless the least interesting to his readers, is his disputes with other papers. It has always been our wish to stear clear of these unprofitable e-ncountcrs, and to cultivate as far as possible, by an uninterrupted commerce
of opinions, the peace and good will of
our brother editors. This wish, with a little exception, has been crowned with success, notwithstanding the restless spirits of the times are ever ready on the slightest offence to enter the field ofcontention, and wage a most degrading warfare. But let those 6ght who will; ours shall be a more liberal course, than to attack and belabor our neighbor, because
he does not think precisely as we do, or
tlo's not make as much noise in proclaiming his opinions to the world. This disposition to do as we would wish to be done by, very ill accords with some peo
ple's notions of tilings. The editors of
the Indianapolis Gazette, have taken it in high dudgeon that we should fay it

did not matter so much whether the .President of the United States was in favor of domestic manufactures and internal improvements, as that the congress should be favorable to them: that .they were the conlroling power, and could acton these measures in despite of the president. These sage editors do not pretend to controvert these plain facts, but
marvel wonderfully that any editor in
Indiana should speak so coolly on the sub
jeet of Roads, Canals, and Domestic j Manufactures; but more particularly, Tve presume, about Roads, as good ones nre murh wanted, particularly in the editors' neighborhood. We should be na well pleased to see our state improved with Roads and Canals, as friends Smith and Bolton; but do not choose to be alwaysdiarping about them, as though our state had a right to expect benefits from the General Government, sufficient to place her on a footing with her older and more populous sisters. Besides, we do know that it is not the intention of the United Slates' Government to make any but very general improvements, such as
shall be beneficial to the whole Union, and not to a state, a county or to an individual. These are improvements
which must engage the attention of our own legislature, and be carried into effect by our citizens. One would be led
almost to believe, from the blustering of
the Gazette, that the United States are
about to make a road or a canal to every man'e door, and that whoever does not join in with them and oppose any man South of the Potomack, who might offer for office, :s unfriendly to the Govern-

Manuel sawing. We are informed,
that in consequence of a wager made, at By Town, on the Ridcau Canal, by Mr. Joseph Lvnn and Mr. John Roberts, with MrSeth Slack and Mr. Barney M'Guire, nearly 300 persons assembled to witness the result. The sawing was commenced by Messrs. Lynn and Roberts , who actually accomplished a cut of 23 1-2 feet long and 7 inches deep in about five minutes, which being considered by the spectators particularly effective, bets often to one were offered in favor of the essayists; hut we were truely astonished in witnessing the efforts of Messrs. Slack and M'Guire, who sawed 14 cuts on the same stick in an hour and ten minutes, when the former acknowledged they were fairly beaten by their opponents.
