MISCELLANY.
From t he M isonic Record. UGOLLYO, THE BANDIT; OR THE REVEN'GE. O, sweet revenge! I hare furn'J o'er the catalogue of human woes, Which sting the heart of man, and find none equal. It is the Hydra of calamities; The seven-fold death; the jealous art the datuaM. Oh. jealously, each other passion's caloa Totliee. thou c inflgr(ion of the soul! Thou king of torments, thou grand counterpoise For ill the transports baauty can inspire! Dr. Young. At. (lie foot of a celebrated mountain in Italy, is still to be seen, the caVe of Ugdino, the Bandit. Never did the biographer record a more ferocious char-; acter, though he possessed those brilliant traits of intellect which might have rendered him illustrious, had his inclinations led him to the paths of virtue.- Impetuous in his temper, he was easily led away by passion ; and unrelenting in his disposition hia revenge when once determined, . could never be relinquished thwitfb opposing barriers miff 'it present
themselves, which, to others, of less determined character, would appear insurmountable. Fear never swayed the soul of Ugolino; and he looked with contempt on him whose mind would ever swerve fr m its firm resolves. Nor less fortified against fear was the soul of Ugo
lino than his athletic and gigantic frame.
Though he had once moved in the high
est circles of society, where luxury and voluptuous indulgence too often beget effeminacy and imbecility, both of body
and mind, yet his active spirit had preserved him to daring deeds, and the over
throw 01 every obstacle whicli sprung
up in his path. From small causes great effects have proceeded, and revolutions
have been the consequence of trilling
disputes. Such had been the case in the soul of Ugolino. He who had been the admiration and the admirer, had now become the foe of man. His soul in its dark vision brooded over the injury he had received, scheming revenge. Night and day, he sal in his dark dwelling and me litated on revenge. In the very wildest SQot in nature, amidthe almost impenetrable gloom of wilderness, was situated the cave of Ugolino, the Biodit. Seldom was the silence of that dark woodland broken, save by the nightly band
who attended the Council of Ugolino. The gloom of that spot was congenial to his soul; a. id there he gathered his band around the midnight lamp, to lay plans for the accumulation of wealth and the destruction of those who had incurred his displeasure. Ogolino was the terror of the country; but none knew or could discover his abode, for it could
o ily be approached by climbing al.nosl
oeroendicular rocks, atid then sliding
down a tremendous precipice, which would have made any shudder but the daring followers of the Bandit. Ugolino berime sullen to his comrades; and three nights they came to the dismal cave, but he still had but little to say, appearing to be deeply absorbed in thought.
'Why are you so lost to your comrades
Ugolino?1 said Petrini, as he took up a hag of gold from a corner of the cave. 'C ier up, our bravo leader, melancholy but ill becomes the daring soul of a bandit.' H ar, then, comrades,' said Ugolino, 'tiie cau-e of mv musing melancholy.
the villian, I had torn him to pieces In my rage. But he escaped. 1 have net seen him since, until of late, and three days since he wedded. Three days and nights I have meditated on revenge; and now, hear me comrades, while I swear never will Ugolino rest, until the wretchedness, or blood, of Count Ohizzo, shall atone for my wrongs. I will follow him to the ends of the earth! but I will not kill him, for that poor pain of dying, would not satiate my vengeance.' Comrade, you are brave, and able to revenge injured innocence,' exclaimed one of the banditti, 'but tell us Ugolino, the particulars of this affair. Was not your daughter's crime equal to that
of her seducer?'
'Oil, no,' cried Ugolino, ns he w iped
a tear from his eye, 'heaven is witness,
that sue was innocent. The falling fortunes of Ugolino gave Count OMzzj the opportunity to triumph over innocence. I stood in need of a friend to support me in my difficulty occasioned by a loss at soa, and he came forward like a generous friend to snatch me from the gulph of poverty, into which 1 fell, at last, by the ruin of a wealthy house in Naples. Still Count Obizzo was the friend of Ugolino. My daugnter, the lovely, fair Cornelia, who now sleeps in peace, saw this disinterested friendship, and loved him, aye, loved him even in proportion as she loved her father. He knew she loved him, and while she praised his kindness to Ugolino, he planned the destruction of the fairest iiower that ever flourished in tile garden of Italy. Oh, cursed be that hour, for it was then that all my hopes were withered. lie partly saved my fortifne, and took, as his reward, the happiness and the life of an only daughter. 1 could have born any thintl but
that.' 'A id how did the demon kill your daughter?' interrupted Petrini, 'and what was the punishment he received ?1 'Cold, cold neglect,' returned Ug'dino, 'for which there is no punishment.

Three leagues hence, as observed before, stood the ancient and venerable castle of the family of Obizzo, w hich had descended through a long line of illustrious ancestors to the present possessor.

of a poet might create, it seemed more like the abode of celestial, than terrestrial beings; for Nature had lavished on that spot all her imagery of the sublime and beautiful. In the distance were
