From the prCiidiigs published today, it will be discovered that legislative operations do not go on so smoothly as usual at the seat of government. The several resolutions concerning the officers of state, can hardly be viewed as indicative of that confidence in their integrity, which should be entertained by the representatives of the people. fhis b'M'ig the case we are gl-id that steps have been taken to ascertain whethej there is any ground for suspicion. V ha beeii to us a matter somewhat straoeje thaf such an inquiry should be delayed so long a? it ha, knowing, as we do, that there has frequently been but one officer at the eat of g nerameot to transact th bu-ine-s of four distinct offices. Aid it is a far', known to man, that the Trea urer r Sfate has, at different periods, been, in reality, the Secretary and Auditor of State, a.id ome times Governor. A man so useful, and who can act, and does act, in so many capacities, surely could attend to two offices at all times, which would be a considerable saving annu illy to the state. It mav be objected, that the Treasurer would not be a proper person to adjust and r.udit accounts where his pecuniary interests might have an undue weight. This we would be willing to admit; but if he has tnv concern with them out of his own office, he might as well have the honor and responsibility attached to the various stations he may occupy at least for the time being, ft is not our wish to impeach the integrity of the present treasurer of state, or other officer of state, but merely to hint at what may lead to bad consequences, if permitted to pass unobserved by the logis'aiure.
