This ca6e which was tried at the last term 'of the court of quarter session of "this county, created considerable excite meat owing doubtless to the novelty of the (Fence with which the defendant was charged. It was an indictment for a misdemeanor, in raising from a grave yard, in Findlay township, the body of a 'Certain kydia Plunket, for dissection. The evidence against the defendant was clear and undisputed; but it was contended by his couhspI that the act was not indictable at Common Law. None of the old writers and compilers upon the subject of the criminal law, had classed it among public offences. It was an uadisputd principle that no one had any property in a dead body it was inere dust; and to dig it up wras nothinp more than a trespass, for which the owner of the sjil where it was interred could m tintain n action. The only English cas- declaring the act to be indictable, occurred since the revolution, but by this case the court and jury were not bound. Acts similar to that complained of, would never be indulged in freely or wantonly. They woujd be undertaken

The legal value of an fcngish wife. Our readers need not to he inform d that an Englishman, according to the vsrge of his country, may sell his wife at public! vendue to the highest hidner; and that instances frequently occur in England ol that very nngallant practice. Dut we little expected that we should hear of such a practice in this country; and stili less, that the value of a wife thus sold, should become the subject of dist ussion in a Court (f justice: ei so it is, and i, becomes our duty to record it. O the 21st of November, 1826, Robert lietham, an inhabitant of this ci'v, hut an Englishman by hirth, sued John Bnltertield, also an Englishman, before Squire Halladav, and declared "for breach of contract in not delivering his, Rtittei field's, wife to him, IJetham, which wift he, Betham, had, for the sum of six cent., bought of him, Ihitttrfcli!, to plantiPT damage $50" The defendant pleaded (he general issue; and a trial h jury was held between the parties. Several witnesses were examined, and the contract of sale was fully proved. The jury gravely found a verdict ot' six cents, in favor of the plaintiir, a d thus established the legal v.-ije of an Englishman's wife. This lady is not unknown to our courts of justice. Not long since, she was indicted for bigamy, in having married a second husband, the first being still alive. O i the trial her counsel proved that she had in fact married three husbands, nil being still alive, and the Jury of course ucfjuilted her. The Gold JUin s.
