Rupert smiled at the superstitious notions entertained by his companion, and enquired whether he was illy enough to be, deluded by a dream? Rudolph replied that he was determined to abandon a life of idleness, and for the futiir, would endeavor to employ his time more profitably than he had-hitherto dom. His comrade called him a fool, laugSed at his credulity, and refused to accompany him. Rudolph tok up his knapsack, and repaired immediately to th house of Mr. James, who had on various occasions, advised these lads to pursue some honest occupation for a livelihood, instead of wanderii g through the country and an noying the industrious part of the community, Rudolph had scarcely reached the door of Mr. James when he was rudely assailed by a servant and peremptorily ordered to quit the premises. Mr. James fortunately overheard the poor penitent express his anxiety to see himself, when he walked into the yard and requested to know his business. Rudolph, with tears glistening in his eyes, stated to Mr. James that he had determined no longer to pursue the idle and precarious life of a beggar, but would, if possible become a useful member of societv.' lie then related his drenm and observed, that so strong and fixed were the impressions that it made on his mind, that he found! it imp ossible to remove them. It so happened that, about this period a band of robbers had been prowling about the country, were taken in the vicinity of the place where Rudolph resided, and confined in the prison of the town. He felt it his duty to visit them. Among the prisoners he observed a man whose age seemed to be equal to his own
and with the lineaments of whose face he appeared to be familiar. Hence, he asked the prisoner where he formerly had his residence and who were his parents? The convict replied that he nev

Sometimes, this miserable man said he lived in splendorand at others, was compelled to beg. And while pursuing this criminal business, he frequently had apprehensions that it would terminate on his part in an ignominious death. He further stated, that in his youthful days he had a companion who, through the instrumentality ot a dream, was snatched from ruin and despair that this companion warned him of the consequences, if he persevered in living a life of idleness; but regardless of his admonitions, he hur-: ried on from one excess to another, until he had imbrued his hands inhuman blood, and lost all hopes of me rev. When he had concluded his narrative, his mind seemed to be in the greatest state of agitation, while the drops of cold sweat chased each other in rapid succession

The next day at the request of hi3 early companion,' Rupert made a full confession, in which j he dteply implicated himself, and stated that his brother-in-law was then chief of tbe band of robbers. He described his person and lurking places with so much accuracy, that the culprit was taken. He died on the wheel a hardened and un relenting sinner.
