The mill was not in operation at the time the accident occurred, and it is supposed to have been caused by pulverizing some hard lumps of powder that were improperly left in the morters on Saturday evening. It had been in operation but a few weeks. Com, Advr.

Election The time is near at hand; two more revolving suns will usher in. the important, the dreaded, yet wished for- Day of Election. Not a moment's time is to be lost; what is to be done, must be done quickly: a day or two, and it will be too late. If tby neighbor has ever done ought amiss in his life -if he has wronged thee or thy family, or tby man servant, or thy maid servant, or the stranger that sojourned) with thee; or has in any way injured thy ox, or thy mule kine,- (with . or wimout malice now is me proper time io make it known proclaim it in the streets, lanes, and allies; preach it on the house top, and in the lower (bar) rooms, for why should these wicked deeds of Candidates be kept secret from the people, on the great Day of Election? A person who cares little which way this bustling matter terminates, can be considerably amused in observing the various manoeuvring of the brlligerant powers. At this time the operations are generally confined to the neighborhood; only a few are left in town, to keep up a show of what is goinjj on without, while the main forces are dispersed in various directions through the county, acting offensively or defensively as emergencies require, and doing; the best they can. One proclaims a most foul and sinful action has beea committed bv some one of the contending parties. Away the story goes, with the swiftness of the fiery element up the mountain's side, destroying; the labor of many days. Thus circulated, it is wonderful to observe the celerity with which these politi

cal fires are got round, and sornstimes stopped, by those who are afraid of being burnt by them: all that is necessary is to get in advance, and, if it can't be put out, kindle another in opposition, which will have a counter

acting effect, and set others to raking about their own fences, for safety. -In the general

conflagration many may escape, like the three

worthies of old from the fiery furnace, unscathed, though, perhaps not 90 justly. By what wc have written, we mean no offence to any one. We thought the occasion demanded something, and we were not very particular what it was, so it related to the election.

The last moments of Jcffrson. Several letters from Charlottsville, published in Richmond papers, state that he died a few minutes before one o'clock P. M. He was sensible of the approach of death, and was evidently gratified at living to see the 4th of July, which he expressed intelligibly ; although he had been speechless from the evening of the 3d. During his illness, lie constantly expressed a wish to live to see the 4th of July. He was perfectly resigned, and declared he wishto die in peace with all the world. Daily Adv.

A friend related a circumstance the oilier day, which, for the honor of our country, we wish could find no counterpart. He told a young man that Jefferson was dead. Not a muscle moved in his countenace to express the least emotion. He said he knew nothing of such a person he had never before heard of him! We felt a glow of shame, when this was related to us. We felt indignant at the heartless parent that could give iiis country a member, and one who was to have his share in wielding her desti-

nies, so completely ignorant ol lier history, as never to have heard of one of the

brightest characters that lias yet graced its pages. Shameful, that a parent through ignorance or culpable negligence, should thus chain down to the earth the buoyant spirit of man, and paralyze mind capable, jrerhaps, of exalted and beneficial attainments. Rut the ignorance of this youth is easily divined. Our friend asked him, "docs your father take the papers?"' "No," was the answer; and it is a response which too many may truly use. Like other people, we feel an interest in the increase of our business; but, if we know our own feelings, we have other reasonsforcondemningthe dangerous inattention of passing alTairs, atxd to the cultivation of the youthful intellect, which would induce a parent to keep from his children's eyes the brief "folio of four pages." Shortly, many a youth will approach the polls for the first time; but, what proportion of these, we would ask, will have a correct knowledge of their own social duties, and of the qualifications which should characterize every candidate for public confidence? They -may,, serve to swell the senseless vociferation, so common on election days, but they cannot exercise the discriminating, calm decision of the intelligent and virtuous citizen. The truth is, there is yet a lamentable aggregate of ignorance in our country, an enormous waste of human intellect and of mental efficiency. Rut intelligence

is pushing forward its conquests: and if

our humble ellorts can add the least impulse to the already powerful momentum, wc shall feel that we have done some service to humanity. An annecdotc was related to us, since

writing the above, which we ouJit not

to "keep dark." A citizen of this place was conversing, not long since, with a civil officer, in Washington township, who said he had thought of subscribing

for our paper, but on looking at one of

i lie n u mbcrs, he discovered that we advertised to print CARDS and he would never take a paper of persons who were so abandoned as publicly to declare that

I they would print such abominable arti

lips have been touched by the lifing coal of eloquence, and he possesses, probably in a greater degree than any man now in existence, the wonderful faculty of enehanting attention of his hearersbut, notwithstanding all this, he will fight windmills. We do Dot mean to say that he always finds fault without cause, some of his attacks are peculiarly just in their direction; and the double edged sword of his wrath falls occasionally on the guilty head. Cut it is alike dangerous to innocence and wickedness; he will destroy both in order that the latter may not escape. He is an insane Knight errant he goes forth to rescua distressed damsels and punish giants and he kills both damsels am! giants. He acts on the same sagacious principle of Herod to destroy all the innocents in order to mike sure of a single victim. Thefe is nothing generous in his character

he has drank the bitter cup, and he wishes ev

The vapour of quicksilver is substituted for steam with similar machinery and a few precautions to prevent any waste of the metal by a pipe on the safety valve.

The bottom of the boiler, which is very small

and strong, as compared with that in use lor producing steam, is conical, and the termination of the cone is in contact with the burning coals which surround it. Their heat is communicated almost instaritaniously to the quicksilver in the boiler, throwing it into vnpour at the temperature of S5G deg. of Fahrenheit Its elasticity and power can be indefinitely increased by heat and the greater the elasticity produced, the greater the vecuum in the cylinder on opening the valve communicating with the well. a man's body, (and what man's character is without a sore its little fault,) he will fasten upon it with a filthy voracity. He has in jured the reputation of the Senate, that illustrious body which has heretofore stood foremost in the affections of the people. On its floor he has shocked female modesty he has emptied the vials of his wrath in every di

A JYohlc Deed. One day last week, a young

man, who was working in toe Delaware and

Hudson Canal, undertook to swim a blind horse

in the mill pond of A. Propping, Lsq. where the water is from seventeen to twenty fest deep;

not knowing himself how to swim, he got fright

ened, seized the horse close to the bit. and

threw himself n his neck, thereby pressing

he blind animal's bead under water. In the struggle the horse turned a summerset, and both came up in imminent danger; one unable to swim, and the other not able to see where to swim to; the horse in the mean time pawing the poor fellow under. A Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, from Susquehannah county, la a spectator of the distressing scene, generously plunged in and led the horse to the shore, before he could render any assistance to the man. He returned with a stick to his relief, which was grappled with such violence by the drowning man as to bring him and his deliverer in contact, when he seized him by both shoulders and almost caused the sinking of both; but Mr. C. fortunately extricated himself, swam to the shore, and procured a slab, which enabled him to sustain himself and the man he so nonobly saved, until further assistance could be rendered from lhe shore. A younsr man was latelv arrested under the following circumstances: He was the clerk of a merchant who had an account at the Chemical Bank. On Monday the 3d instant he presented a checkat thatcstablishment, drawn in the name of his employer. The signature of the check did not, to the person in the Bank, appear quite right, and the young man was requested to take it back and ask his employer to fill up another. He, went away, and shortly after presented himself again at the Bank with another check, accompanied by a letter from the drawer, apologizing for the manner in which he had signed his name, stating

that it was done in haste, and thanking

the oilicers ol the bank for their circumspection in endeavoring to prevent fraud. The check was then paid. Since the

celebration ofthe Jubilee, it has been dis

covered that both the checks were signed by the young man, who also wrote the letter. He is now lodged in prison to await a trial at the next Sessions.
