frBible Society The annual meeting of the Lawrenceburgh Bible Society, will be held at the Meeting House on Sunday next.

Important. Our readers will perceive by an article taken from a Cincinnati paper, that we are hereafter to have tuo eastern and western mails per week. This we have been wishing for these twelve months; and have used some exertions to get the object accomplished. But stop gentle reader, don't take us up wrong: we are not wishing to take any credit to our share for what we have done; but are willing to bestow it where it ought to rest. The Hon. William Hendricks, we observed by a letter from the Postmaster General, has done much towards its accomplishment, by representing to the post office department the necessity of such a measure; and to him, and Mr. M'Lean , we ascribe as much praise as is justly due for doing a worthy action.

Commerce of Lazvrcaecburgh. Some idea can be formed of the commerce and growing importance of this town and

county, by the following statement of

produce shipped at the river, for the Mississippi or Lower country market, from the 1st of January to the 1st of May 182G. In giving this statement, he have confined ourselves, almost exclusively, to

the product of the neighborhood ofl

the town: not having it in our power to give the rcholc amount of produce exported from the county, which would, it is believed, if taken into the account, swell the sum to 80 or 100,000 dollars. 14,140 bushels, corn, at 50 cts. per bushel, - - 7,070 00 51 horses, at 75 each, 3,825 00 13G tons hayat 20 per ton, 2,720 00 45 head cattle," at 25 each, 1 ,1 25 00 2131 bbls. pork, at jG per bbl. 12,786 00 1393 kegs lard, at 3 per keg, 4,179 00 493 live hogs, at 5 each, 2,4G5 00 GG hhds. hams, at 32 per hhd, 2,1 1 2 00 10 tons do. at 5 per cwt. 1,000 00 1 1 bbls. do. at 8 per bbl. 88 00 80 bushels potatoes, at 50 cts.

Dark Business. On yesterday evening, as our citizens were retiring to bed, a tremendous cry of Murder Murder, was heard, and a man seen running up High street like a fury, with a rope attached to one of his arms. A number of the citizens immediately collected to inquire the cause of the disturbance, when it was found to proceed from a black man. When interrogated, he stated that he had been confined in Mr. Charles L. Crasher's Hatter Shop in this town, from the middle of the afternoon, till that time, 10 o'clock that Benjamin and George Brasher, and John T. Bishop, had visit

ed him through the afternoon, and told

him they were going to take him into Kentucky to bis master; that they would start at night and travel till morning; and that they knew'his master, and he should own one in Kentucky. To all this he was to nod amen, or fare worse. The above is the substance of the negro's story, in relation to the men before named; and whether true or false, it is strongly coroborated by circumstances. At all events, there is no doubt about the negro's having been tied by some person, and beaten to make him keep quiet. The negro states he is free; came from Virginia; and that his name is Andrew Shields. It is of no consequence whether this is true or false, our laws define the mode of reclaiming slaves, which is simple and easy to understand ; and any person who shall take any human being out of the state, by force or otherwise, without conforming to them, ought to sutler to the extent of the law for kidnapping. We are sorry that circumstances should require such an article from us; but so it is, and duty says it is right. (jr We are much pleased at being enabled to inform our subscribers on the

western route, that the mail through Lawrenceburgh, Vevay, Madison, &c. to Louisville, Kv. is to be carried tzcicc a ucck from the first of July next. As at present arranged, the mail is to leave Cincinnati every Tuesday at 4 A. M. arrive Louisville every Friday and Sunday at 8 A. M. and return to Cincinnati every Monday Wednesday at 5 l. M. We have long been anxious to have more frequent communication with Louisville through Indiana, and our thanks are due to the Post Masher General for the additional accommodation which this arrangement will ailbrd to the public. Detroit. May 24 Emigration It was feared by many, that the pressure of the times and scarcity of money at tbe Eastward, would tend greatly to retard emiratioa to this country the present season. If, however, the people continue to pour in as they have done thus far, we shall gain a roach greater accession to our population than in any former year. It is hut fourteen days since the first vessel arrived here from Lbiffrtlo, and already more than one

t"-.and persons have land-d on our shores.

The taverns are constantly filled, and the stages, of which about a dozen, besides extras, leave fbe city every week, are crowded.

From the National Intelligencer. Flying Wcavcl. During the past year, the Fljing Vv eavel made its appearance in some sections of country, where it was very little, if at all known before, and injured the ciops of w heat in the stack in some places very much. Now the fact is, that this n stroyer is always to be found in those latitudes where the winter

seasons are as mild as they have be.en in the

vicinity of the Poiomae river, for the two last.

and as the insect did much injury last year, it is but reasonable to presume that much more

will be done the present, without some precaution is used. The only remedy is, to get the wheat out immediately after harvest; some say it is best to let it lie in the chajf until wanted fur use. I his is said to be a complete remedy, as to render tbe depredations of the Flying Weavel of but little consequence, where the farmers

are in the practice of getting out their crops of

wheat soon after harvest. GIDEON DAVIS, Manufacturer. Georgetown, D. C. 9th mo. 9, 18:26.

fifteen dollars, took herleparfure, unaccompanied by anyone far the West India. Weeks, months, and years, passed over, but there came no tidings of ihe old lady. She had almost ceased to exist in tbe recollection of her nearest neighbors; the old roan, her husband, bad given her up for lost, and it is said, had long since begun to cast his eyes about among

the plump widows and antiquated damsels of

the neighborhood, fearing that he might be under tbe necessity of supplying the place of hi long absent, and perhaps his deceased wife, (for be waxed old, and did not love to be alone,) when one day last week, when the old man sat cogitating on the subject at his cottage door, a beautiful carriage drove up and made a bault the door opens the steps are let down, and lo! out jumped the old lady, dressed in silks and satins, plump into the old man's arms! The old man, we suspect was considerably shocked. J'cir Philadelphia Ohio June C. Distressing. During the thunder storm which occurred in this town on Friday evening last, Henry Gray, a promising lad, aged 12 years, and son of Mr. George K. Gray, was in the stable of his father? with two other children, when the lightning struck the gable end,

descended towards the door, against

which the unhappy youth was leaning, and in an instant deprived him of life. His hat was literally rent to pieces, and as the electric fluid passed from the head

to the feet, it tore the clothes in its progress, and left a mark the whole length of the body. The two children were knocked down and one of them slightly injured.

From the Delaware Gazette. Good lucfc for Raftsmen. two young men from Middletovtn, in this county, went to Philadelphia with a raft of hemlock lumber, a few weeks since, which they had nearly worn out in unavailing ctforts to sell in a dull market. Driven to their last extremity, and acting upon the maxim of nothing venture, nothing have," they hartered the remainder of their lumber for three or four lottery tickets, and tbe next dny one of them fortunately drew two thousand Jive hundred dollars.

These boats were generally built by our own citizens; and the hands employed to navigate them, resided principally in the county: so that the greater part of the money expended tor the exportation, was put in circulation in the county, among our industrious and enterprising citizens.

We are informed by a gentleman from Brookville, that Mr. Shriver, the Canal Engineer, has arrived at that place with his family and a corps of men, to aid in the accomplishment of the several surveys specified in his instructions.
