LAWRENCEBURGH. SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 1C26. Tiiuse who nr? good at nuking tx.uics, says Frmkhn, art: seldom good at any thing else, lie this as it may, we owe, at least, an explanation to our readers for the failure ot our paper last week. Two causes 1st. one of the workmen sick and disabled; 2d. no ma. Is, by which we could receive, or send oil", papers. We have not been able, as yet, to clear our office of old packers, in consequence of thes. failures. Ji small mistake. 1'Ue Hrookville paper of the 14th inst. states, upon the authority of some person from Cincinnati, that tin; Ohio river had risen to such a height s to overflow the old town of l.wrenceburgh entirely; the highest part of High street was said to be tivo feet under water, atd ftais were entertained that much damage had been sustained by the citizens. To allay the urixietres and unplesnt feelings of our neighbors for our safety, we cn inform them that our citizens are all well and above water, having experienced very little damage or inconvenience from the late flood, which was the highest known fur many years. Those inhabiting houses near the river and on low ground, removed generally on High street, where: they were secure; this street varying from 4 6 :eet above the water at its highest stage. The wavr receded slowly until it has got witfisn the banks, ieaving things in the same order it found them, except a tew pannels of infirm fence, which it pulled up to give place to better much o the iratiti :ation of post and rail fence mkers, no uoubt. We art we ll persuaded that the article alluded to,,was published with a full belief of its cor-rectm-si, tht-ittore, we wish to say nothing more th.n.to correct an error, which might prejudice strangers against one of the most thriving and business-doing towns i 'h.. state. Fire! About 2 o'clock m the morning of the 6th inst. a very destructive, fire occurred in this place, which destroyed the court house, togethpr with th? pjpers and recor.Js of die clerk nd recorder's t-ffi.v-u. I he fire when first discovered, Was n).'k.ng rapid progress up the stair w ay from the firs' floor, but before a sufficient number had collected to effect any thing, it bust forth from the roof, which rendered it impossible to suvt the house with the means within the power o the cit.ztns. There cannot be a doubt. tluv the dest: uclioii was the work of an incendiary, as th. fi:-e originated in that part of the bouse most remote from any fire pUce, and unfrequented by those who occupied the offices. No correct estimate can be formed of the damage sustained: all the papers and documents burnt wen- generally valuable to some pn vm, h- clerk and sheriff are iosers to a considerable amount. T.ie perpe'rator ot this base eterd, bis not yet been detected, and, we are sorry to add, probably, will not. Summary justice. the present Congress. lb. Mc7i nf Straze. A modern traveller in Italy relates the following whimsical account of a ruse dc guerre, practised by a highway robber. "Mv companions in the Diligence were all on the quivive: for the carriage had been stopped and robbed two evenings before, by a single footpad. This fellow had practised a most ingenious and darincr stratagem to effect. his purpose, Me manufactured ten figures of straw, who, in the darkness
of the night, appeared armed with fusee and sabres; he drew up in the road in battle array, and having taken his post a little in advance of his corps, he ordered the Dili, nee to stop threatening, if the least distance was offered, to call up his cr .pa ions, and put all the passengers t dea In this manner he laid the wh( j part under contribution, amongst wl n were two Spanish merchants, wiln their .ervants, whose purses were hivily laden, and who were well armed'
The last Annual Obituary of the sian Empire, published at St. Petersburg, records the death of a man at the ver advanced age of 168, near to Polosk, un the frontier t Livonia. Gustavus Adolpu. lie had been a soldier in the thirty years war; at the battle of Pultowa, in 1709, lie was 51 ears of age. At the ajre of 93 he married ins third wife with whom he lived uO year?; the two vounesl sons of this marriage were 8G and 62 respectively in the year 179G; the oldest of his other sons in the same year were 9o and 92 respectively. The entire family of this patriarch comprises 138 descendants, who all lived together in the village ofPollatzka, which the Empress Catharine the Second caused to be built for them, granting, at the same time, a considerable tract of land for their support. In the lG3d year of his age, this modern Nestor was in the enjoyment of the most robust health. It is stated, that not long since, on Leaf River, Miss, while a planter was from home, and his wife and hve children sleeping in a room which had but one door, and no window, the house took Sire and that when the lady awoke, the onl passage by hich escape could have been eilected, was then filled with the flames. In tiiis horrible situation, she; embraced the youngest of the children and rushed throng', theconsuming element, hut such was her consternation, and she was so burnt, that the child was lost. The unfortunate woman ran to the nearest netghbor, a mile distant, and expired. The house and five children were all consumed. New Bankrupt Bill. Many of our leaders will see with pleasure, and none, wc presume, with indillercnce. that a bill toestaiilish a uniform sslem of Bankruptcy, throughout tiie L'nion, was yesterday reported to the Senate, by Mr. Hayxe, of S. C. The bill is, of course very long, and evinces a degree o! attention and labor creditable to the Committee, and deserving the thanks of all who are interested in the subject. It is impossible for us now to find, room for any thing like a detailed exposition of its provisions; but, in addition to the reference made to the contents of the bill by Mr. IIayne, in his introductory remarks, (reported under the proper head,) the following brief outline of its main ob jects, is ollered to our readers. I he hist section declares, in substance that any Merchant, or other person engaged in commercial pursuits, who shall j commit anv ot the acts ot bankra utc , therein specified, may be declared a a bankrupt. Farmers, and others, are exempt from the operation of this section. The next sections provide for the apIpomtment, ;n each btate, ol' una General Cor.jtriissioucr of Bankruptcy, before w Imiii shall be conducted all ouestions arisinir under the law, with the right of appeal to the Courts of the United States, and securing a jury trial, in all cases, where it may be demanded by eilher party. Special commissions are authorized, in all cases where the court shall deem eflual 'nelit ot all the creditors. Vanou provisions are made, in other parts of tht1. bill, with the object of securing to creditors the w hole estate of the bankrupt. Provision is then made for the support of the bankrupt, pending the in - vesication, anu ior a nnai all . ,. i .- . . .. owancc to mm 1,1 proportion u me amo, tint divided , ... ,x (though exempt from the operation ofl 1, on the application ot the creditors. and 7nt'i tncir 07cn consent, to become bankrupts. One man has been severe ly hurt: but we retrain from oinmore . n . at large in the case, as we understand it is to be the subject of legal discussion. We mu;t however rcgiet that such steps as attempting to take forcible posiession should be resorted to, when redress can be had by the laws of the country. Civilized men should certainly be cautious of taking the administration of the law in their own hands; as the prevalence of such a system would be destructive to the public peace, as well as the safely of our citizens.
