"Come Inspiration from thy hermit seat, "By mortals seldom found.'-
selected. THIS WORLD'S NOT ALL A FLEETING SIIOV." This world's "not" all a fleeting show For man's illusion gjven; He thathatb soolh'd the widow's wo, Or wip'd the orphan's tears, doth know, There's something here of Heaven. And he that walks life's stormy way, With feelings calm and even, Whose path is lit from day to day, By virtue's bright and starry ray, Hath something felt of Uearen. He that the christian's race hath run, And all his foes forgiven, Who measures out life's little span, In love to God, and love to mm, On earth has lasted Heaven.

MADAME LAFAYETTE.
The annexed letter from Washington to Madame La Fayette, at a period of her darkest distress, when her lnishand was a captive,
and she a wanderer, has heen sent to us lor
publication, by a lady into whose possession it has fallen, it is the original letter from which we print. If aught were yet to he added to the name of Washington, an addi
tional claim to the admiration and love of
mankind might be found in the delicacy with which a gratuity is here represented as the payment of a debt. N Y. American. Philadelphia, January 31, 1793. Madam If I had words that could convey to you an adequate idea of my feelings on the present situation of Mr. de la Fayette, this letter would appear to you in a dhVerent garb. The sole object in writing to you now is to inform vou that I have deposited in the hands of Mr. Nicholas Van Stnphorst, of Amsterdam, two thousand three hundred and ten guilders, Holland currency, equal to two hundred guineas, subject to your orders. The sum is, I am certain, the leasf, I am indebted for the services rendered me by Mr.
de la Fayette, of which I have never yet re
ceived the account. I could add much, hut
it is best perhaps that I should say little on this subject. Your goodness will supply my o deficiency. The uncertainty of your situation (after all the inquiries I have made) has occasioned a delay in this address and remittance, and cven now, the measure adopted is more the effect of a desire to find where you are, than from any knowledge I have obtained bfyour residence. At all times, and under all circumstances, you and yours will possess the affectionate regard of him who has the honor to be, your most obedient and most humble servant. G. WASHINGTON.

A good Story. A few months-ago, a farmer living a few miles from Laston, (la.) sent his daughter on horseback to that town, to procure from the bank smaller notes in exchange for one of 100. When she arrived there the bank was shut, and she endeavor

Im, Grange. Grange is derived (quasi) from gran a gerendo i. e. bearing grain, and
was originally applied to the farm-house of)
a monastery, from which, it was separated
at some distance. It is said, that in some
country of England, all houses standing by themselves, and unconnected with others, are at this day called Granges. Shakspcare applies the term to a house encircled by a moat, or canal of water, used as an ancient defence: "I will presently to St. Lukes; there, at the moated grange, resides this dtjeoled Mariana.Measure for Measure.

but a good book is the precious life-blood of
a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.5 j A French preacher was once descanting from the pulpit with great eloquence on the beauties of creation ; whatever," said he, "comes from the hands of nature is complete. She forms every thing perfect." One of his congregation very much deformed, and hav-
ing a very large hump, went up to him at the close of his discourse, and akcd,4iVhat think ye of me, Holy Lather, am I perfect ?' To which the preacher replied very coollv. "yes, for a hump-backed man, quite perfect." At a recent dinner in Philadelphia, the chairman proposed a health, but neglected to pass the bottle, upon which a facetious citizen exclaimed, "Mr. President I will thank you for some wine, for a dry toast always gives me the heart burn.

Hear what the immortal Milton said, even
in the early dawn of this glorious day, on the influence of books: UI deny not (said this exalted and fearless Englishman) but that it is of the greatest concernment in the church and commonwealth, to have a vigilant eve how books bemean themselves, as well as men; and thereafter to confine, imprison, and do sharpest justice to them as malefactors; for books are not absolutely deaJ things, but do contain a progeny of life in them to be as active as that soul whose progeny they are; nay, they do preserve, as in a vial, the purest cfijcacy and extraction of that living intellect that bred them. I know they are as lively and vigorously productive, as those fabulous dragons' teeth; and being sown up
