selected. Ell IK'S ISLE. Young love, with glory hand in hand, Had stray'd about both far and near; At length they sought some favor'd land, And found that favored land was here Here! here! in Erin's beauteous hie, Where manly hearts are ever found, To make the drooping mourner snails, And heal the grief of sorrow's wound. All hail the fate that led me here, The frowns of fortune fo beguile; This favor'd land my heart can cheer, For pleasure dweli3 in Erin's Idc. This heart that late was sad, depress'd, .This face, that knew not how to smil, Shall now with joyous smiles be dress'd, To greet the sons of Erin's Isle.

FROM THE ITALIA?.. When Fortune smiles and life is fair, Seek not the gem of friendship there; When true and false are mingling near, They both may seem alike sincere, But when the storms of sorrow lower, And pale distress assert3 her power, The clou-.'s that first o'ercast the skr, Will bid the friends of fortune fly. eyes of an offended Deity. When a man lias gone thus far in the ways of sin, and pursued that path for so long a time, and listened unto her precepts with such undeviating attention, he becomes hardened, and is not too good to commit the most horrid crimes. He sinks more deeply into the dark abyss, when naught is to be found hut wretchedness and misery. His dealings become at length so slanderous and inexpressibly dishonourable, that it is impossible for him longer to escape the observation of those around him. The eyes of society are opened, they behold standing before them a hardened villain. He perceives he is at length discovered. Ho determines to be in future fair in all his deal inirs, and seek peace in the sight of hea

From the New York Mirror, THE LIAR. ADDRESSED TO THE YOUNG I1Y C. S.

Liars are certainly the most despicable

and miserable beings that exist. If a liar

speaks, he is sensible, that no person who is

acquainted with his pernicious habit, will

believe what he says, though it should be

true as the gospel. What dependence is

Ihere to be placed on a liar? None. He U despised byr every sensible man, and his life is made miserable, for no person who ha: any regard for his own character and rrpnta-

lion, will associate with a liar. Deprived of

the society of his fellow beings, he knows not

what course to pursue, whereby he may re

gain the good will of his neighbours, which by his foolishness he has lost. When he discovers his real situation, when he finds that lie is despised by those who formerly loved him, and is no longer looked upon with a favourable eye, his only resource, whereby he may re-establish his character and reputation, is to turn, or rather pretend to turn Christian. .

He is now justly termed a Hypocrite, for

ic conceals his diabolical designs under the truly imposing and delighting cloak of Christianity. Thus he is at once a Liar and a Hypocrite, and I hope that I shall prove before I abandon the subject, to the satisfaction of all,, that this man through the foolish practice of lying, will deserve a longer title to his name before his life is finished. Under the cloak of Christianity, that pure, that heavenly feeling, he practices all those base arts, which the devil alone can devise. In the entire and close pursuit of gain, he acts dishonourably towards his fellow-men. He practices all kinds of fraud. He has gone so far under his imposing disguise, and though men know it not, vet that tender and upbraiding thing, his conscience tells him he is a cheat. Oh! what a bane to every man!y feeling, wdien his conscience upbraids him

him. He reflect? upon the aw fulness

of his situation. Hist u rack r i fr ever gwic, never to be redeemed ; id- reputation is lost, he is placed among the basest of mankind. Despair takes hold of his weak mind. K becomes again hardened by necessarily asso

ciating with his fellow prisoners. Could he

have been kept out oi prison, perhaps he might have become a good man, and an ornament to society; but justice must be satisfied. Instead of leaving his native country, when the term of his imprisonment has expired, and in some distant clime, where he is r.ot known, endeavouring to establish that

which he has by his foolishness lost for ever

in his own, he still associates with those wretches who have for a time past been his sole companions, and enters still more deeply into crime. Thus he goes on, and contin

ues to pursue that path which has been h

him a stumbling-blocK, and 13 not satisfied until he ends his days in prison, and finishes his unhappy and guilty life by an tgiurniniuus and shameful death. After tracing thithrough every line, you vill not, cannot but acknowledge its truth. And will you Mil! persist in that practice, which, together wilidleness. is the root of all evil? Ah ! it is well, 1 can picture to myself your determination. It is, I will follow the paths of true religion, for "all her ways are pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.'

Indulgence i?i Bed. The last No. of the European Magazine contains an ingenius article, showing the way in which lying too lon in bed injures the body. This is unquestionably one of the most pernicious habit which can beset poor human nature. Too much bed (and above seven hours is to; much) debilitates both body and mind: if causes indigestion, nervous disorders, low spirits, and is as hostile to "good looks' a? to strength and cheerfulness. We hear some unhappy and inveterate sluggard exclaim. "But different constitutions require different quantities of rest!" No such thing: seven

hours is an ample allow ance for young or eld.

Having thus far emerged into the deep recesses of sin, he thinks it is but fair-dealing to pilfer a little. He pictures to himself the benefit, which the following of such a course will afford him over his neighbours in their worldly affairs. He will soon be rich; he will purchase a beautiful villa; live happily the remainder of his life; will cheat no more, and will leisurely repent of his sins. By pursuing this course of conduct, he evidently becomes a Rogue and a Thief. Thus is his honourable name again lengthened. He attends regularly divine service; no one is seen oftener at social
