On the 7th of Oct. a most destructive tire
broke out at St. John's, New Brunswick, which spread terror and devastion through
the whole country: houses, barns cattle,
and human beings have alike frit its baneful
effects. Six or seven hundred inhabitants
have been left destitute of food, clothing, or
shelter by the flames; a number of whom
narrowly escaped with their by-retir

J !- .-7 amount of property lost is esiimaa d at about 120,000 dollars. Accounts from the neighborhood ofMiramichi, of the same date, are even more distressing: Personal safety was the object of all; the impetuosity with which the liery element pursued the fugitives, gave them no time to save property. Distress, with all its gloomy horrors, was visible on every countenance, and often burst forth in loud lamentations for friends and relatives, whose absence created the most disagreeable feelings for their safety. In the general confusion, many who attempted to cross the river, on logs, &c. were drowned. The shipping was frequently on fire, which rendered escape in that way extremely difficult; open boats were resorted to as the most certain mode of escape, although every moment exposed to the brands and coals of fire which fell around them in torrents. A great number of families perished in the ilam.es, together with cattle, hogs, &c. Those who have escaped the tire, will perish for want of food, unless relieved by the hand of charity.
At the late military election in this place, the following gentlemen were elected to command the Lawrenceburgh company: Captain Andrew Armstrong ; Lieutenant A. H. Dill; Ensign John M'Pike.

Bcrnr. An?. 'J. A most extraordinary
and distressing event has lately occuned ii
our town,. A Hanoverian, eiuhtv vear of
age, who was lormerly a master of arms, resided at a country house near Jierne, with his live daughters, the eldest of whom was aged thirty, stud the youngest sixteen years. The family were of very retired habits, but
were chietly governed by the elder sister, who was noted for her imperious disposition and an opposition to religion, which approached to fanaticism. It appears that a young Englishman, who had been for some time an occasional visiter to the house, became smitten w ith one of the daughters, and one fine evening, as the five sisters were taking the air in a carriage in the avenues of the Kughi, they met him in his cabriolet, accompanied by a friend. After parading up and down for some time, an exchange of vehicles was proposed and accepted bv the young ladies, one of whom accompanied the Englishman, and his friend entered the carriage with the ladies. A similar change v;i effected until the Englishman found himself with the object of his affections, with whom
he immediately decamped, and the others,!,nCTS a,uJ sound- of anvils the turning of one dollar anil twentv live cents -boardinc, lnl
