MAJV. AN APOLOGUE BY SHERIDAN. Affliction one day, as he harked to the roar Of the ? torrny and struggling billow, Drew a beautiful form on the sands of the shore, With the branch of a weeping willow. Jupiterv struck with a noble pln, As be roam'd on the verge of the ocean, Breathed on the figure, and calling it Man, Endued it with life and motion. A creature so glorious in mind and in frame, So stamp'd with each parent's impression, jhrong them a point of contention became,

He is mine, said Affliction, I gave him his birth, I alone am his cause of creation The materials were furnished by rae, answered Earth I gave him, said Jove, animation. The oda all assembled in solemn diran, After hearing each claimant's petition, Pronounced a definitive sentence on man, And thus settled his fate's disposition: Let Affliction possess her own child till the woes Of life cease to harrasa and to goad it; After death give his body to Earth, whence it rose, And his spirit to Jove, who bestow'd it
From the Mirror. EULOGIUM ON CAMOENS. THE PORTUGUESE POET. The powers of intellect, unrestrained by the shackles of human prejudice, uncontrolled by the dictates of false philosophy, aspire
to honour, and long to revel in the fair fields
of immortality. Such emotions burning in
the bosom of Leonidas, inspired him to offer
himself a voluntary sacrifice on the altar of
his country's liberties. Such emotions cor
rupted by ambition, perverted by a love of
criminal greatness, prompted an Alexander
and a Ceasartofill the world with blood and
misery,. and to lay the foundation of their
fame on the ruin of individuals, and families and nations.
Naturally prone to venerate, mansearches

the warrior's actions, let their names be hush
ed, and be the praises of the poet ou r present theme. "Supreme, removed beyond all
height above," and on a throne of adamant, sits the immortal hard of Greece. Astoun
ded by the magnificence of his powers, the mind in vain attempts to portrar the vivid
flashes of his fancy, the gigantic efforts of
his surpassing genius. 1 he goddess of Eulogy herself, lost in the blaze of his glory, points to the Iliad, and retires. The name of Anacrcon will be for ever dear to tlie worshipper of poesy. Anacreon the sprightly songster of the Ionian grove, whose voice was sweet as the melody of nature, and gay, and blithsorne as the carols of the lark of summer. Honour to thy memory, charming bard ! Roseate leaves, ci myrtle bands shall always intvvine the pedestals that support the fabric of thy glorious immortality I Scarce had. the strings of Anacreoirs lyre ceased to reverberate, when Pindar, the Theban bard arose. And shall dull scholastic rules restrain the flight ofPiwiar's genius? As well might mortal hand attempt to seize the bolt of Jove : for it was rapid as the car of Phoebus, and vivid as the flash of heaven. Long since had Sappho refused to breathe her tender notes. Lucretins had moralized. Theocritus had sung when the muses left their favourite seats to traverse the banks of the Tiber, and listen in the groves of Albania to the melodious strains of the Venusian bard.
While thus we briefly call to recollection
while modern poetry aided by the genius ol
Ariosto,Tasso,Boccacio, Sz, Lorcnzo,v as advanced almost to the p'mnieleof perfection. Numerous compositions appeared, rivalling, nay excelling the greatest productions of an
tiquity, one only excepted, and interior to none other than that of the Iliad of Homer.
While Italy was thus marching in the ca
reer of eminence, the attention of the world was suddenly arrested by a literary phenom
enon unexpected as it was glorious. Two
thousand years had elapsed, since the walls
of Lisboa were erected bv the far-famed,
wandering son of Penelope. Since that pe
riod, not a ray of science had glimmered on the horizon of Lusitania. No epic lvre had
yet been strung to commemorate the deed?; of her warriors: no poetic footsteps had imprinted immortality on her mountains : never
had her vallies re-echoed to the song ot the bard. The night of ages at length passed away: the morning of her literary greatnesdawned : the sun of her rIory rose with the
birth ofCamcens. Nurtured in the bosom
of prosperity, his youthful soul anticipated
in the enjoyments ot society, and the favours of his country, all that is grateful and delicious to the sensibilities ol the human
heart. But an experimental knowledge of
the world, soon dispelled the delusions of youthful fancy. The visionary theories of a vivid imagination the alluring whispers of hope, were soon lost in the thunders of misfortune, and the breezes of prosperity, served but to waft him to destruction. Oh!

could the chilling iiidillerence of an ungrateful country suppress the genius of man, never would the name of Camccns have been inscribed on the pages of glory long since would his name have been hushed in eternal silence. But the genius of Camrens was not to be fettered by misfortune, nor by the ingratitude of other men; "nor penury restrain his noble rage, or freeze the genial current of his. soul." Rising superior to the miseries that beset him, and directed by the impulse of an originalintellecr, he soared through the flowery regions of the poetic world there founded his greatness there reared the superstructure of his immortality. Never since
departed ages, illumined by the splendours the days of Homer, had the world been illu
mined by the rays of a genius so magnificent.

Do horrid phantoms break the adamantine locks of hell, and from the infernal gulf, in a'i their terror clothed, arise? A frightful form's before you his hair's of withered red, scared by the terror of avenging Jove. The raging storm lowers at his frown angry lightnings issue from his presence he mutters hoarse thunders. Our imagination recoils. Our eve-balls roll widely. Our voice is tremulous. The pulses beat rapidly: and sensation almost pauses, till the phantom vanishes. Do sheets of fire light the eternal arch of heaven, or do earthquakes rock the world to its foundation? The poet enjoys the awfulscene, and springing on the whirlwind's wings, soars through the war of elements,
flashes as the lightning blazes, and bursts and peals tremendous as the rolling thunder. Did the lire and sublimity of Homer ever rouse you ? Did the wildncss of Ossian ever transport you ? Did the harmonious strains

The operations of nature seemed to pause: a gloomyand impenitrable darkness appeared to hover over the world: and save where the fires of idolatry blazed, or where the Troubadours strung their wild and melancholy harps, all was silent and dark as the hour of death.
