LAWRENCEBURGH.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1825.

New Orleans papers up to the 30th Sept have been received. The market still con

tinucs dull, there being little demand for

produce other than for city consumption

Flour has fallen somewhat in consequence of the quantity arrived from up the river;

sales were at 5 50 per barrel. Whiskey

plenty and dull; sales at from 20 to 24 cents per gallon. Arrived during the season

32,533 barrels. Tobacco, 1st quality. 6 1-2

to 7 2d do. 5 1-2 to 6 X and suspended, 4 1-2 to 5 bale, 7 to 8. Stock on hand,

1042 hogsheads.

Wc.are sorry to learn that the ravages of

the weevil have been so great as to destroy,

in many cases, through this part of the coun try, the farmers' whole crop of wheat, re

ducing them to the disagreeable necessity

of either using corn or purchasing wheat at

an advanced price, which its scarcity will

doubtless occasion. We learn that the de

struction is not confined to this district, but

has been extended, by this mischievous in

sect, to a number of the western & southern

states. In some parts of Kentucky, Illinois,

and Missouri, good wheat cannot be had, al

eaten and damaged in such a manner as to

leave it worth nothing the hog, whose sto

mach appears capacitated for any thing that

can be eaten, turns from it with sullen dis dain, tho' hunger urge him to eat.

Simon de Escudero, a citizen of the Mexican

Republic, and a deputy in the Provincial

Congress of the state of Chihuahua.

He is the bearer of letters to the authoriies of this state and of the United States,

which show xm official station which he holds at home, and also of a communication

rom the governor of New Mexico, in which he latter forcibly urges upon the U. States

the necessity of co-operating with him for

he purpose of putting arj end to the robbe

ries and murders which the Indians commit

between Missouri and Mexico, and which

are so prejudicial to the commerce carried

on between the two countries. 1 ne mam object, however, of Senor Escudero, is to

makehimself acquainted with the people and

nstitutions of the United States, for which

purpose he proposes to remain about twelve

months.

We regret to state that he was a large

loser by the audacious robbery which the

Usages committed about a month ago, and

of which we have heretofore given an ac

count. Among other suhV.rers he has verified his loss, and laid in his cl-iim before the

Superintendent.Gen. Clark, who will doubt

less exert all tue power oi Ins oltice to pro

cure complete indemnification.

W e have stated that Senor Escudero was

from the state of Chihuahua, the former

province of New Biscay, of which the city

of Chihuahua was the capital, having lost ils

name under the Republic, and the province transformed into a state, has taken the name

of its capital. The official papers are in the

name of the "Free, sovereign, and independent state of Chihuahua," and are stamped

with the words "God and Liberty.

leaked, in moderate Weather 250 strokes, and when sailing quick about 130 strokes an hour. The form of the sword is oval, and the part which remained in the ship's plank was about 1 2 inches in circumference. The part which perforated the cask completely rilled the hole which it made, so as to prevent any leakage of the oil with which it was filled.

Melancholy Accidents. A heart rending

scene occurred in Junius on Friday last.

Mr. Jacob Peters, and Mr. William Steel,

both young men of South Waterloo, Fayette,

were hunting together in the woods east of

Seneca alls. Peters had fired at a squirrel

on a tree, wnich alterwards attempted to run

down. He and his companion ran towards the spot, with a view to prevent the came

H orn escaping, when tne ntle oi Steel, prob

ably being cocked, accidentally went olfand shot Peters, who immedately expired, Mr.

Steel ran out of tne woods into a field, hallooing in distress; those who heard him, at tirsu supposed he might be playing some trick tiii finally he apparently fainted and fell. It

was some lutle time before he recovered so as to tell what was the matter. The fatal pot was sought for but could not be found, until Mr. Steel so far came to his rational senses, as to he able to lead the wav. As soon as he came in sight of the body overcome by grief and distraction, he again fainted. A coroner inquest was held, and no blame was attached lo the unfortunate and discoi isolate survivor. The ball broke an arm, passed through the chest, and lodged agar.st the skin on the opposite side. We also learn that a young woman in Ovid, on Thursday or Friday last, who had been peaiir.g peaches, rose from her seat with a knife in her hand, stepped on some pearings 'ud slipped down, when falling the knife accidentally entered her side and caused her death in the space of 1 2 hours. Truly, eve in the midst of health, we are sur.ouiuled by death in a thousand forms. Seneca Farmer.

in others it will not. Should the stumps o

Mr. Children says "An acquaintance of mine who occasionally suffers severely from dyspepsia, and was somewhat sceptical as to Dr. Prout s conclusions, lately requested me to examine the lluid ejected from his stomach, during a violent dyspeptic paroxysm the day before, with the view of ascertaining the nature of the free acid it contained. The fluid which had been thrown from the stomach in the morning fasting, when filtered, was perfectly transparent and nearly colourless: it gave a decided red tint to litmus paper. I distilled about six ounces of it almost to dryness, at a gentle heat, receiving the product in three separate equal portions. One half of each portion was treated with nitrate of silver.

The first had no effect on litmus paper, and scarcely gave the slightest cloud with the test. The second became slightly coloured by the test, but was equally without any action on the blue paper. The third portion reddened the paper strongly, and produced an abundant dense cloud, when I dropped

into it the nitrate of silver, and a pretty co-
