Appearances calculated to estrange the
mind from the common course of observation, are always effectual in directing it to
the source from wnence they emanate. It
is admitted by all that the moon has her in
tluence and that the sun lends her light; and
that Venus is the evening and morning star. These observations arc made as intro
ductorv to what we are about to relate.
On Wednesday last (April 30,) a heavy
sound similar to the discharge of artillery
was heard, about o o clock, a. m. apparent
y descending in a perpendicular direction rom the Heavens this was followed by
something like that of musquetry firing in
dehle, and in regular succession. Alter a momentary intermission, the long roll was
heard distinctly and as correct as if it had
been beaten on a drum accompanied with
something like the feu dc joy.
These sounds were heard in Shelbyville,
Rushville, and many other places, more
than fifty miles distant from each other.
We have a cloud ol the most respectable
witnesses to testify to this statement, among whom is our present senator Col. James
Oregon.
The pood old book tells us, that "sisrns will
appear in the Heavens," and to shew the
co-incidence, or rather, to demonstrate that
facts are stubborn things, we add something
which, though old, is not without analogy.
Constantino the Great, who took posses

"Some dig for golden ore" It is the opir.on of some, that corn will be scarce during
the next year, in the vicinity of the gold

ing evil, that many will probably neglect their ploughs to wash the auriferous sand?.
Thc discovery of Barringers mine has set
the people to searching for gold in places where it was never before thought of. With
in the few past weeks, we hear of its being found in i(ty places. The fact is, there is a region of country lying between this place
nd t ayetteville, which may be called the
gold region. In tfjat region, there is scarce
ly a mile square in which particles of gold may not be found. In the neighborhood of this place, within a few dajs the metal has been found at several places. We have seen specimens from Peter Brown's, (about seven
miles easi oi aaiismiary.) where some 40 to 50 dollars have been picked up in pieces, from one to 10 grains in size. Since January, o or 6000 dollars of thc metal has been sold at this place, principally, however, from the pits at Barringer's, where of lte, we learn but little is found. At Parker's and near Montgomery court-house, the diggers continue to make wages at 50 to 100 cU-
per day. Jestcm Carolinian
We some time since noticed several in

by a native workman of this citv, Mr. Sam-

forks, with all the appendages of a Lilliputian dinner apparatus, which, together with two pair of razors, several smafler knives, scissors, &c. are contained in a small box not four inches square. The pen-knives are composed often distinct pieces, and the largest weighs 4 1-4 lOths of a grain. The whole are intended as a present to the President of the United States, and certainly are curious specimens of the state to whic h the art can be brought by extreme skill and in dustry.JV. Y. New Theory. Professor Hanstien considers the Aurora Uosealis, as a luminous ring surrounding the magnetic pole with a radius varying
trom liU tieg. to &U deg. and at tl.e height of about
one hundred miles above the surface of the earth.
It formed, he thinks, by luminous columns shoot
ing upward from the earth's surface, in a direction
parallel to the inclination of tb; needle, and to the direction of the earth's magnetism: these columns render the atmosphere opaque while they pass through it, and only become Juminious after they pass beyond it From the outer or con vex side of the ring, beams dart forth in a direction nearly perpendicular to the arch, and ascend toward the zenith; and if they are so long as to pass it towards the south, they collect in the south into a sort of corona or glory, which is situated in that point of the heavens to which the south pole of the neefx?a
points. Professor H. finds that observations made respecting the northern Aurora are well explained by this hypothesis; and he has collected facs to show that a similar ring exists around the southern magnetic pole situated in New Holland the northern beins in North America. He infers farther, though the stock of observations is rather deficient, that similar luminous rings exist above the. two ex
tremities of th secondary magnetic axis in Siberia and in Terra del Fuego. Boston Jllcd. Int.
