ACTS OF FAITH
Trust God to deal with negative treatment in the workplace
By LILLY RANDOLPH
Every day someone starts a new job in America. Most new hires have high hopes in the beginning, high hopes for the possibilities of upward mobility, working in a friendly environment, obtaining stable and equitable income and meeting new people. In today’s workplace, many diverse spirits prevail, some positive and some negative. These mental and spiritual roller coasters can cause emotional distress. Often, mental games played out in the work place can seem so real, that workers are goaded (a verbalization that encourages you to attempt something) to leave employment prematurely, causing financial havoc for themselves, or become so mentally defeated that they undertake counseling. The players behind these work place games vary in gender, culture, economic background, education and spiritual walk. Duringyour term of employment you may encounter negative attitudes, but don’t get discouraged. Instead, consider the following observations, opinions and options before leaving early for the next job. If you begin sensing you are not allowed to make a contribution, rather than withdrawing, pouting, or self-de-structing, create a journal and document
your thoughts and suggestions. Also include the date, details and witnesses to various events. This will empower you with evidence that you are a team player. If you encounter difficult people, identify something positive about them and elaborate on that asset. For example, compliment them on anything they may be accomplishing in their personal or
professional lives. If you confront verbal assault, don’t retaliate against the person. Instead, record the incident to sort the real from the imaginary and to track a pattern. And of course, use goodjudgment in reporting these events to your supervisor. The intent of this article is to provide suggestions on how to continue to strive for success and excellence on the job. Many of you reading this may have faced negative situations or are going though a bad experience now, but have not been able to express the incidents because they’re not tangible. Hopefully, these words will offer helpful advice and help you understand you’re not alone in these events. While certain actions can be mandated by law, negative attitudes cannot. Therefore, in order to battle these situations, you might practice regular prayer, attend or find a church home, read uplifting and motivational material and connect yourself with a positive support system. For example, surround yourself with positive cheerleaders and mentors, and things that nurture the mind, body, and spirit. But most of all trust in God and acts of faith to provide direction, strength, and comfort that will help you endure.

Concert proceeds will go to church damaged by hurricane
Special to the Recorder
The adult choir ministry of St. Christopher Catholic Church announced that it is holding its annual Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15th at 7 p.m. in the church worship space, located on the southwest corner of 16th and Lynhurst Drive in Speedway. Anyone who enjoys a variety of Christian music will find this concert a welcome relief from the “seasonal” music usually heard at this time of year. Admission to the event is free, with all proceeds from a “goodwill offering” going to help restore the music ministry of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay Saint Louis, Miss., a church whose facilities, but not its soul, were
devastated by Hurricane Katrina. “This is the first time St. Christopher’s Winter Concert has identified a benefactor outside its own parish, but we can empathize,” says Larry Hurt, St. Christopher’s Director of Music. “St. Christopher’s worship space was damaged by fire a few years ago and I remember how anxious I became while we restored our worship space and our music ministry.” “Like St. Christopher, Our Lady of the Gulf enjoys a very lively music ministry,” says Ed Grotkowski, Our Lady of the Gulf’s director of music. “We really appreciate the outreach and generosity of the St. Christopher musicians in helping us to restore an all important element of our worship service - music.”
